KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says it is unfair to label him a “munafiq” (hypocrite) based on an edited video clip from an American news outlet.

Anwar said the part of his interview with CNN’s Richard Quest had been cut to make it seem like he supported Israel, which was not true.

Speaking at the Dewan Rakyat today, Anwar said Malaysia has not recognised Israel as a state since the time of Tunku Abdul Rahman.

He said this policy has not changed, and Malaysia remains committed to supporting Palestine.

“It is okay if some critics disagree with one or two words I said in the interview, but don’t misinterpret me and take my stance out of context.

“I have attacked Israel unequivocally. I don’t know what else I can do about this. I made this clear in Riyadh, Rio de Janeiro and other global forums.

“Malaysia’s stance on this issue has been one of the harshest. I have called Israel barbaric, zionist and oppressive. These were statements made before world leaders, not in Cherok Tok Kun (his hometown),” he said.

Anwar said his critics were unfair to use the edited clip to accuse him of hypocrisy.

“I have been called a liar and munafiq … this is unfair. The video has been taken out of context.”

Anwar also said his government has banned Israeli flights and ships from entering Malaysia, unlike previous governments.

“Under the previous government, these flights and ships could enter freely, but now they cannot,” he said.

In reply, opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin said the opposition supports Anwar’s strong position against Israel and his support for Palestine.

However, he suggested Anwar admit if there was a mistake in the CNN interview and move forward.

“I understand you might have been very tired from travelling during the interview. We should not let this divide us. We are united in supporting Palestine and condemning Israel.

“But if there was a mistake, just admit it. There’s no need to blame others,” he said.

Separately, Anwar said Malaysia remained open to trade with all nations, including the United States, its largest trading partner.

He said US secretary of state Antony Blinken had expressed concern about Malaysia’s recent outreach to other nations.

However, Anwar said he told Blinken that Malaysia was open to working with all countries.

“While we continue to engage with the US, we will also strengthen ties with countries like China, India, Brazil and nations in Africa and the Middle East.”

Atuk saka dulu pun pernah saman media luar ke...Kerja sia sia tak buang masa dan duit..saman saje phk tempatan yg mainkan isu ini utk kepentingan politik.

Issue begini ko mahu gelebah bangnon... Tetapi ko and muslim donia diam issue sudan sekarang depa akan hadapi starve to death crisis and disease outbreak di sana seperti malaria.. Cholera..
