XVIII Fit World Congress   CONGRESS  BACKGROUND

Translation, as the bridge between different nations, peoples and cultures, has played an indispensable role in the development of the human civilization. In today抯 world where globalization and cultural diversity go hand in hand, it抯 no exaggeration to say that the world couldn抰 do without translation for even a single day.

The World Congress of the International Federation of Translators (FIT), a top-notch event in the global translation community, traditionally attracts some 600~700 professional translators, interpreters, linguists, terminologists and educators as well as leading players in the industry from around the world to engage in professional exchange, global networking and business pursuits.

The XVIII FIT World Congress, to be hosted by Translators Association of China
(TAC), will be the first time that this Congress is ever held in an Asian country. It will be staged at the Shanghai International Convention Center, a modern five-star hotel just next to the landmark of Shanghai

Copies of Registration Forms and Second Announcement and Call for Presentations in relation to the XVIII FIT World Congress scheduled to be held on August 4-7, 2008 in Shanghai were distributed when Miss Huang Changqi, Assistant to the President of Translators Association of China (TAC)(中国译协), attended the 11th International Conference on Translation (Persidangan Penterjemahan Antarabangsa Ke-11) held in Kuala Lumpur on 21-23 Nov 2007. Huang was here in Malaysia to present a paper on the Translation Industry in a growing economy - China case study. The presentation concluded with a brief introduction to the 2008 FIT Congress. TAC, the organizer, formed a preparation team as early as late 2005 to promote the 2008 FIT Congress. It has actively reached out and sent representatives to various international events in the translation and interpretation profession. Huang抯 presence at the 11th International Conference on Translation (Persidangan Penterjemahan Antarabangsa Ke-11) in Kuala Lumpur was part of TAC抯 international promotion for the 2008 FIT Congress. http://www.fit2008.org/E_fit2008/node_1831.htm

Dear Colleagues: If you have made up your mind to attend the XVIII FIT World Congress in Shanghai next August, we recommend you to register NOW to take advantage of the Early Bird Registration Rate AND the best accomodation and international travel arrangement. Don't forget that the Beijing Olympic Games which will take place right after the FIT Congres will add both glamour and cost to the participants. The earlier you register and make reservations, the better. The Registration Form (for fax) can be downloaded from the Congress site website (English, French). On-line registration will be ready by Dec. 20, 2007. For accomodations, you will only need to pay a deposit of the first night at present. For pre- and post-conference tours, you are advised to make your choices now, as this will be taken into consideration when you book your air tickets. For other day tours, you may book on-site when you arrive. The Shanghai Jin Jiang Tours Co., Ltd., the logistics parther of the Congress, will set up a table to provide such booking services.
