History of The Stairs to Bromo Crater

The beauty of Bromo tourism has been known to foreign countries for hundreds of years.  The path to this location was pioneered by the Morbeck family who can be said to be the first tour and travel agent to promote to England to America.  Morbeck will provide all the means of transportation and accommodation for tourists who will visit Bromo.  It is recorded in history that the King of Siam (now Thailand) King Rama V, Maha Chulalongkorn was the first visitor to reach a tent in the sea of sand by wheeled vehicle in 1896.

The journey from seeing the beautiful sunrise at Penanjakan, is not complete if it has not descended into the sea of sand and continued up to the Bromo crater.  The sea of sand and its crater itself is a sacred place for the Tengger people, especially the crater which is a very sacred place.

Before reaching the crater, we have to climb a ladder with a total of about 250 steps.  In various old literature the number of steps is mentioned differently, some say 240, 250, 260, etc.  This can happen for various reasons, especially damaged or buried by material from the eruption of Mount Bromo.  So there is no fixed amount, it will continue to change according to natural conditions.

The stairs to Bromo crater were first built in 1910, in order to welcome Z. H. JOHANN ALBRECHT Hertog van Mecklenburg who is said to be still the brother of Prince Hendrik.  In addition to visiting Bromo, in the photo documentation, JOHANN ALBRECHT also visited Susuhunan Solo Pakoe Boewono X.

In the old inscription it is still written: "BROMO-TRAP gebouwd in Maart 1910 Voor het eerst bestegen door ZH JOHANN ALBRECHT Hertog van Mecklenburg" which translates: " BROMO-TRAP was built in March 1910 Installed for the first time to climb by ZH JOHANN ALBRECHT Duke of  Mecklenburg"

In the 1916 photo, it appears that this inscription has almost been buried.  With the high activity of Mount Bromo, if this inscription had not been moved, it would still have been under the heap of Bromo vomit material.
