Kim Hee-sun’s Faith up for a 2011 premiere
by javabeans | August 27, 2010 | 18 Comments
The high-budget drama production of Faith is going forward despite the loss of its star Lee Jun-ki to military service. (Lee had been cast, but was forced to drop out.) Kim Hee-sun, however, is still onboard, and the 30 billion won project (which seems insanely high for a drama series) will be produced in 3D.
Philip Lee (Story of a Man) is also onboard, but the lead character is still up for grabs. A “famous Hallyu star” is purportedly in contention.
Faith is a fantasy medical sageuk that deals with Oriental medicine in the Goryeo era. Definitely a lot of interesting things to mix into one project. Directing is PD Kim Jong-hak, who made notable use of computer graphics in the fantasy-sageuk drama Legend. According to once production source, they are using 3D filming techniques in order to perfect the visual effects. The drama is planning to hold its production press conference and begin filming in October.
Faith doesn’t yet have a broadcast station or a timeslot, but will probably air next year. Initially set to be an SBS show, it now has a strong chance of going with MBC instead, according to one rep with MBC’s drama department, who said that chances are good. They are, however, proceeding carefully in light of the enormous budget and the considerations that come therewith.

Kang Ji-hwan is Lee Jun-ki’s replacement in Faith
by javabeans | November 10, 2010 | 56 Comments
Finally, upcoming drama Faith has a leading man to fill in the spot vacated by its previous lead star Lee Jun-ki, who had to drop the drama when army service came calling. And now, with the casting of Kang Ji-hwan (Coffee House), things just got a lot more interesting!
I’m currently making a sound right now that can only be heard by dogs and small animals, such is my surprise and excitement. I am aware that there is only one news outlet reporting this news at the moment, though Star News is usually fairly accurate and is describing the casting as a done deal.
Furthermore, according to the report, Kang isn’t exactly a new addition, and he shot the drama’s trailer video on Jeju Island in early October along with the rest of the cast. In addition to Kim Hee-sun, that includes veteran Choi Min-soo (Road No. 1), Kim Seung-soo (I Am Legend’s resident custard ex-husband), and Philip Lee (Story of a Man, who will actually be seen first in the upcoming Secret Garden). One reason given for not announcing this casting to the public earlier is because the Entertainment Management Association is requesting that Kang not be cast. (Kang’s still in an ongoing legal fight with his former and current management companies regarding contract disputes.)
Faith gained a lot of buzz early on with the casting of Lee Jun-ki and ’90s drama queen Kim Hee-sun, the latter of whom hasn’t acted much in recent years after marrying and becoming a mother. By the time Faith makes it on the air, she will have been off television screens for five years.
Furthermore, the project is an interesting mix of genres, and has been described as fusion historical project, to be filmed in 3-D with an enormous budget of 3 billion won (approx $2.5 million USD). Dealing with the topic of Oriental medicine, it is set in the Goryeo era and is being planned for 16 episodes. (It does not yet have a home with a particular broadcast station.)
Faith will be directed by a man familiar with epic fusion sageuks and huge production budgets, Kim Jong-hak of Yonsama’s 2007 drama Legend (Taewangsashingi). In fact, a number of the supporting cast are also from Legend, such as Philip Lee and Choi Min-soo. (Choi was also in PD Kim’s classic ’90s drama Sandglass.)
Though not my usual cup of tea, I’m intrigued by the premise of the drama — and, as you know, I’m a huge fan of Kang Ji-hwan, who is no stranger to the fusion sageuk himself; it was 2008′s comic sageuk Hong Gil Dong that really made him a household name. We’ll see what this drama brings when 2011 rolls around…

Faith loses its second leading man in Kang Ji-hwan
by javabeans | December 26, 2010 | 33 Comments
Hmm, another setback for high-budget medical sageuk series Faith, which has lost leading man No. 2, Kang Ji-hwan, who’d been called in after the drama first lost Lee Jun-ki to army duty.
The reason given by Kang’s management, S Plus Entertainment, was that he would be cutting back on all acting and industry activities, due to legal matters stemming from his contract dispute with previous management company, Jambo Entertainment. There had been reports that the dispute had been settled, allowing Kang to star in SBS drama Coffee House earlier this year, but the Korea Entertainment Producers Association has a different take on things. Since Kang didn’t abide by their request to stall all activities until a settlement was made, matters have dragged on over the past year.
The association has asked its members to keep Kang out of Faith; they did the same with Coffee House, which went ignored, but this time Kang has stepped back. His reps apologized to the association and acknowledged that this matter has become more than a company/actor issue and is now an industry matter.
The drama, directed by Legend PD Kim Jong-hak, is being produced in 3D for broadcast in the first half of 2011, and has cast Kim Hee-sun, Philip Lee, Kim Seung-soo, and Choi Min-soo.
Bummer.

Lee Min Ho cast in his first historical drama, ‘Faith’Actor Lee Min Ho will be taking his first step into the sageuk (historical drama) field with his first casting in the historical drama, ‘Faith‘.
In the upcoming SBS‘s Wednesday-Thursday drama, ‘Faith’, which will air around August, Lee Min Ho will act as Admiral Choi Young, as part of King Gongmin’s escort. He later becomes General Choi.
‘Faith’, a fusion sageuk, is about a Goryeo Dynasty warrior who meets a female doctor from the modern times, and together help make a king who will truly care for and heal the people. The drama will be produced by writer Song Ji Na and PD Kim Jong Hak, who’ve worked together to create hit dramas like ‘Sandglass‘ and ‘Eyes of the Dawn‘.
Through his agency, Starhaus Entertainment, Lee Min Ho stated, “Right when I read the script, I was pulled into it and read until part 6 in a dash…As I already like sageuks, and have been looking to appear in a sageuk for an image change, it seems like I’ve found an armor that fits my body.”
