Diving: China tuneup ahead of world meet
15 Feb 2007
Christopher Raj
EIGHT national divers, five men and three women, left for Kunming, China on Sunday for a four-week training stint as part of their preparations for the World Championships in Melbourne on March 22-29.
The divers are Yeoh Ken Nee, Rossharisham Roslan, Khairul Safuan Mansur, Bryan Nickson Lomas and Ahmad Fakhri, and women Leong Mun Yee, Elizabeth Jimie and Cheong Jun Hoong. All are under the guidance of Chinese coach Li Lijie.
Elizabeth, 14, and Mun Yee were bronze medallists at the Doha Asian Games last year.
"Everything is going on well so far. I hope to achieve some good results in the World Championships," said Elizabeth.
Bryan, who with James Sandayud, took the men抯 10m synchronised platform silver in Doha, is being drilled in certain weak areas of his discipline.
"There were errors we made in the Asian Games and these are being corrected," said Bryan. "I am confident I will have a good run in the World Championships".
"The divers are making good progress here (in China). It is good for them to train with the other divers as this makes it more competitive." said Li Lijie.
Siow Yi Ting has opted out of the World Champions in order to concentrate on the NCAA Divison One championships in the United States scheduled for March 17 to April 1.
Yi Ting is in the US under a University of Wisconsin sports scholarship and being one of their top swimmers, the Malaysian is obligated to represent them.
Besides the eight divers, top junior Daniel Bego also leads a group of young swimmers who will be making their debut in the biennial World Championships which is the first stage of qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The juniors are Eric Chang, Kevin Yeap, Yap See Tuan and Melvin Chua, while the women swimmers are Chai Sook Fun, Khoo Cai Lin and Australian-based Ong Ming Xiu.
The swimmers are currently training at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil under Australian Gavin Urquhart, whose contract has just been extended for two another years.

Diving: Rossharisham wants own glory
By : Shirlexia Tan
TO qualify for the Beijing Olympics 3m springboard individual and synchronised events is the target national diver Rossharisham Roslan has set for himself.
Often known only as "Yeoh Ken Nee抯 partner" for the synchronised event, the 24-year-old Rossharisham (picture) is now ready to walk out of his partner抯 shadows and achieve some personal glory.
"For years I抳e been concentrating on the synchronised event with Ken Nee. But since our new coach Huang Qiang took over, I抳e started to train for the individual event as well.
"I am not giving up the synchronised event. In fact, I want to compete in both the events at the Olympics next year ," said the Kuala Lumpur-born diver.
Rossharisham made a comeback to the individual event early this year at the Canadian Fina Diving Grand Prix but returned with poor results.
However, at the Italian Grand Prix last month, he finished ninth in the field of 43 divers. It was the first time he had made an individual event final at a grand prix diving competition. i
And that was when he decided to try his luck to qualify for the Olympics.
"The result at the Italian Grand Prix had given me confidence to do well in the individual event, and I抦 confident of a place in the Olympics if I can maintain my form," he said.
If he does qualify for the Beijing Games, it would be his first Olympics after being with the national team for 12 years.
Rossharisham and Ken Nee抯 partnership, since 2001, has been a success story so far.
The pair had created history in numerous world class competitions, with the highlight being the silver medal performance at the Doha Asian Games last year, finishing only behind powerhouse China.
Their performance this year has also been impressive, winning the country抯 first medals at the diving grand prix, with two bronze medals at the China and Canadian Grand Prix in April and May.
The pair are now in China with the national team for a training stint until the end of next month. |

Malaysian increases tally to four golds at Asian meet
PETALING JAYA: Malaysian diver Cheong Jun Hoong produced an impressive show to bag two gold medals on the fourth day of the Asian Junior Aquatics Championships at the Senayan Swimming Complex in Jakarta yesterday.
The 17-year-old came out tops in the girls' 10m platform and then went on to clinch a second gold in the 1m springboard to give Malaysia their seventh diving gold medal in the championships.
It was Jun Hoong's fourth gold and she now has a chance to make a clean sweep of all the five titles at stake.
She will compete in the 10m platform synchronised event on the final day of competition today.
On Tuesday, Jun Hoong emerged champion in the 3m synchronised event. Two days later, she triumphed in the 3m springboard.
Yesterday, Jun Hoong bagged gold in the 10m platform with a total of 348.65 points.
Kazakhstan's Ludimia Kahmel amassed 339.95 points for the silver.
Malaysia extended their domination in the absence of the Chinese divers in the girls' competition with Jun Hoong winning the 1m springboard event with a total of 420.15 points.
Macau's Choi Suk Pan was second with a 393.70 total while Kahmel, who collected 382.05 points, took the bronze.
Malaysia also bagged a bronze in the boys' Group B (Under-15) 10m platform through Ahmad Fakhri.
He picked up 339.50 points to finish behind two Chinese divers.
Feng Wuhan accumulated 431.10 for the gold while Wang Feng finished second on 415.95.
Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (Asum) secretary Edwin Chong said they were pleased with Jun Hoong's performance.
揥e are now grooming her in the 10m platform for the Thailand SEA Games in December. We do not have any good platform divers and she is our best option, |

Our divers grab three more gold medals on final day
By LIM TEIK HUAT
PETALING JAYA: It was a glorious outing for the Malaysian divers when they bagged all three gold medals at stake on the final day of the Asian Age-Group Aquatics Championships at Senayan Swimming Complex in Jakarta yesterday.
Beijing-bound Olympian Bryan Nickson was the toast of the team, beating the more fancied Chinese to win the boys' Group A (Under-17) 1m springboard title.
After finishing with three silvers from his earlier events, it was a satisfying final outing for Bryan, the first Malaysian to qualify on merit for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Bryan: The Beijingbound Olympian beat the
more fancied Chinese to win the boys' Group
A (Under-17) 1m springboard title
He amassed 481.30 points to clinch his first gold in the championships. Wang Jihao (461.50) took the silver while Chang Quan (458.55) clinched the bronze.
Cheong Jun Hoong picked up her fifth gold of the championships when she partnered 14-year-old Pandelela Rinong to win the girls' synchronised 10m platform final. It was Pandelela's fourth gold in her first international outing.
The Malaysian pair accumulated 280.38 points to beat Indonesia's Shenny-Hadina for the gold. The Indonesian pair garnered 269.52 points while Hong Kong's Selena Mah-Louisa Mah took the bronze on 185.28.
Elizabeth Jimie completed a grand day for Malaysia when she triumphed in the girls' Group B (Under-15) 1m springboard event.
The 15-year-old from Sarawak chalked up 319.30 for her first gold of the championship while compatriot Wendy Ng posted 280.60 points for the silver.
Malaysia emerged as overall champions with a 10-gold haul. Diving giants China bagged six gold medals through their boys' team. China did not enter a team for the girls' competition.
Malaysia also managed to surpass their previous best haul of eight golds in the last championships in Bangkok two years ago.
Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (Asum) secretary Edwin Chong said it was a very fruitful outing for the Malaysian team. 揥e have proven that we are the second best Asian team after China in diving at the junior level too. I am happy to note that our boys managed to contribute two gold medals, |

Diving: Record four divers make Olympics

Rinung will compete in the 10m platform.

A RECORD four divers have earned automatic qualification for the Beijing Olympics, while Yeoh Ken Nee抯 hopes of a backdoor entry remains in the balance.
| Bryan Nickson Lomas was the first to book his Beijing ticket. | | Leong Mun Yee is the most seasoned diver. | | Yeoh Ken Nee抯 ticket is still uncertain. | The four are led by Athens Olympics semi-finalist Bryan Nickson Lomas, who was the first to book his place via a seventh place finish in the 10m platform at last year抯 World Championships.
The Sarawak duo of Pandelela Rinung and Elizabeth Jimie, the all-conquering pair that swept all six gold medals on offer in the women抯 events at the 2006 Malaysia Games, will both be making their Olympic debut this year.
Last year抯 World Junior Championships gold medallist in the non-Olympic 1m springboard event, 16-year old Elizabeth has made the cut in the 3m springboard alongside the seasoned Leong Mun Yee, who will be diving in her second Olympics.
Elizabeth had qualified thanks to a fifth place finish in the event at the final Olympic qualifier in Beijing on March 25, where Mun Yee finished seventh.
In that same meet, the 15-year-old Pandelela finished sixth in the 10m platform, to earn her debut as the youngest ever Malaysian to qualify for the women抯 events at the Olympics.
Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (ASUM) secretary Edwin Chong said the qualification of the quartet was confirmed yesterday by the International Swimming Federation (FINA).
揟hose were the qualifiers in three stages from the World Championships, World Cup and the Olympic qualifier, who make up the 34 places in each event, |
