ABOUT JOO JIN MO

Joo Jin Mo began his acting career in TV dramas and some minor
roles in film. He was first cast as a lead in Dance Dance (1999), Korea's only dance film,
for which he underwent extensive dance training.
Although the film itself did not perform well, it leant Joo some publicity before he

broke through with the box-office and critical hit (The)Happy End.
His role as a spurned lover in this psycho-drama attracted considerable notice in Korea,
and the film itself also traveled to Hong Kong.

After taking the lead in Kim Ki-duk's mildly experimental Real Fiction (which was shot in
3 1/2 hours without any retakes), Joo took a major role in the much-hyped Musa, set in
14th century China and starring Zhang Ziyi from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
He also acted in Wanee and Junah, a melodrama about a screenwriter and an animator
opposite popular actress Kim Hee-sun.

In 2003 he was rumored to take the lead role in an action blockbuster from Sidus Pictures,
and also in the latest film by veteran director Park Kwang-su, but both films were then
cancelled due to a lack of financing.
Joo's return to the screen came in spring 2004,

in the comedy Liar based on the play Run For Your Wife by Ray Cooney.

200 POUNDS BEAUTY WEIGHS IN AT THE BOX OFFICE

Month-end box office tabulations for January, according to Film 2.0, have placed local comedy 200 Pounds Beauty past 6.23 million admissions, making it a major sleeper hit.

The film has become the most successful Korean comedy of all time, edging past My Boss, My Teacher, which sold 6.1 million tickets earlier last year.

200 Pounds Beauty has also passed Shiri (1999)at 6.21 million, making it the eighth biggest box office draw in Korean history.

The comedy is about plastic surgery & it  has attracted appearance-conscious Koreans with its humorous tale of an extremely overweight singer, the 'ghost voice' behind a lip-syncing pop star. Fed-up of being ill-treated due to her weight, she has drastic full-body surgery, reappearing as a slim and sexy sensation.

The film is based on a best-selling Japanese comic book series by Yumiko Suzuki and directed by Kim Yong-hwa who previously revealed his talent for comedies with his feature debut, Oh! Brothers (2003).

Actress Kim Ah Joong, who stands at 169cm tall, weighs in at a petite 48kg, donned a life-like body-suit, put together by renowned Hollywood make-up artists  Kris Kobzina and Christopher Burgoyne, to play the extremely obese 95kg Han-na.
After saving up money through her singing work and her night job chatting up lonely men on a phone-sex network, Han-na transforms herself into a gorgeous , irresistible woman,  men drool over.

The film resonated with Korean female audiences concerned with their figureand reflects the booming surgery-culture now rampant in Korea.

200 Pounds Beauty is one of three releases in 2006 that have dealt with the plastic surgery issue. Kim Ki-duk's art-house feature Time looked at the troubling effects of the trend as it plays out in human relationships, while soft-porn turned auteur director Bong Man-dae's horror film Cinderella sees plastic-surgery in an even darker light, bringing death and mutilation to a group of young school girls seeking better looks.

200 Pounds Beauty has been accused of being too "pro-surgery" and of sending out a message that surgery improves your life. The overweight Han-na is certainly badly treated by most people until a plastic surgeon transforms her into the stunning center of attention. On the other hand, the film can be seen as a satiricalindictment of a hypocritical society that places too much value on appearance. Director KIM told the press, "Society is the problem. Placing more value on beauty, society also nags at the people that attempt to enter into that society through plastic surgery匢 don't defend plastic surgery, but it's ironic that people place such importance on appearances and talk about 'originality' at the same time".

Actress Kim Ah Joong  has also been at the top of the pop charts for singing the film's theme song "Maria". Kim Ah Joong was the recipient of Digital Music Awards "Song of the Month", presented by homepage service provider Cyworld, for the song downloaded the most by its users. The success of the song and music video have helped keep the film in the public spotlight.
200 Pounds Beauty was produced by REALies and KM Culture.
It was distributed locally by Showbox and released on December 14th, 2006.
KM Culture is handling international sales.

The Storyline

Kang Han Na initially weighs 95 kg with a height of 169 cm.

Eventhough this doesn't meet the standards of Korean actresses, singers and entertainers Han Na has always been a bright & light-hearted girl.

With a charming voice and a talent for singing, she works in an entertainment agency as an understudy singer (lip-sync vocalist) for Ami, a famous, beautiful yet tone-deaf singer.

Han Na's nightly job is to chat with sleazy clients on a phone sex service network.

Han Na's penchant for making money reflects her lifelong dream to be a beautiful (or just normal) girl. With the money, she believes she can get plastic surgery, erase her previous fat-girl identity and reboot as a slim and sexy girl.

[Korean Film News] '200 Pound Beauty' Enters Top 10 Hit List

The Korean romantic comedy "200 Pound Beauty" starring actress Kim Ah-jung entered the country's accumulated top ten box office hit list on its 42nd day of release. Production agency KM Culture says 5.83 million moviegoers watched the movie since it opened on December 14th, moving it past the 2000 hit "Joint Security Area," which previously held the tenth ranking. Showing on 250 screens nationwide with daily average ticket sales of 50,000, the film is expected to surpass the 6.12 million viewership of the ninth-ranked "My Boss, My Hero" by Saturday. With a break-even point of 2.3 million, 200 Pounds Beauty has already earned profits of 15 billion won. Excluding investors' stake, the production company will get five billion of the 15 billion. The original soundtrack released online also raked in some two billion won for close to a handsome four billion total earnings for KM Culture.
