3 Idiots shatters Ghajini's opening day collections record with Rs 125 million net
MUMBAI: Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots has shattered the opening day box office collections records of all time with net of Rs 125 million (Rs 12.50 crore) in India on Friday.
These are the early industry estimates compiled by Businessofcinema.com by Saturday noon. However, the exact numbers will be available by early evening.
The previous record holder for opening day collections was Ghajini, which did a net business of Rs 90 million (Rs 9 crore) on Friday in India. This is followed by Love Aaj Kal (Rs 80 million), Kambakkht Ishq (Rs 75 million) and Singh Is Kinng (Rs 72 million).
The movie, which has been produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and stars Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Boman Irani is scaling new heights at the box office.
As was first reported by Businessofcinema.com, the paid previews of the movie on Thursday brought in net collections of Rs 27.10 million (Rs 2.71 crore) in India, which is also the highest ever. The paid preview collections of Ghajini were Rs 16 million (Rs 1.60 crore) net.

- Once again Aamir Khan has hit the jackpot. His comedy-drama 3 Idiots has scorched screens worldwide and raked in around Rs.93 crore (Rs.930 million/$20 million) in its opening weekend. Loosely based on Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller “Five Point Someone”, the film has been produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and directed by Rajkumar Hirani. Its box office collection has beaten the initial earnings of another Aamir starrer Ghajini, considered Hindi cinema’s highest grosser till date, with 30 percent more earnings till Sunday night. “Response has been overwhelming from all over the world. Aamir, Raju and I knew from the responses earlier on that people liked the film but this is something else We have got reports from places like Australia that they have reduced ‘Avatar’ shows and increased ours,” said Chopra in a statement. “‘3 Idiots’ is the highest grossing Hindi film ever in Australia on its opening weekend. Similarly in the US, I have been given to understand that ‘3 Idiots’ would be highest ever for a Hindi film,” he added. Reliance BIG Entertainment, which is the distributor of “3 Idiots”, released the movie Friday with about 2,000 prints across 40 countries. Made at a budget of about Rs.35 crore, the film criticises the glaring anomalies in the Indian education system. The paid previews of the movie also garnered over Rs.9 crore worldwide, above those of the paid preview collections of Ghajini that was Rs.7 crore globally. It also stars R. I need to discover a new term for the stupendous business of 3 IDIOTS. Historic, earth-shattering, smashing, rocking, astounding, record-shattering, fantabulous... 3 IDIOTS has gone beyond these terms. Its business has surpassed not just GHAJINI, but also the expectations of the industry. All calculations and predictions have gone for a toss, with 3 IDIOTS setting new records at practically every centre of India.
Everyone keeps asking me, kitna business karegi? Sorry, I don't have an answer for it. It's akin to a hurricane right now and frankly, no one would be able to guess the numbers at this juncture.
The opening weekend was superb Monday was bigger than Saturday and Tuesday looks rock-solid too. The footfalls at plexes continue to swell and it only goes to prove that the aam aadmi is ready to put his hand in his pocket, shell out Rs. 200 to Rs. 300 to Rs. 500 for a ticket, provided the film is worth it.
As I see it, 3 IDIOTS is sure to outperform GHAJINI in the domestic market. In fact, most distributors I spoke to feel that 3 IDIOTS is going to overtake GHAJINI by leaps and bounds. That's great, isn't it?

Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan reportedly sold to Fox Studios for Rs 100 crore brings back the hit pair of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, who were last seen in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham in 2001. What's more, it doesn't start with letter "K" and promises to be different from what Karan has done so far. With 9/11 acting as a backdrop, My Name Is Khan is the story of Rizwan Khan who is out on a journey to meet the President of America.
Also making a comeback is team Guru - Mani Ratnam, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai - who bring us Raavan scheduled for a mid-2010 release. The film is reportedly a modern take on Ramayan where Ravan's charm overshadows Ram's.
Taking its title from Mahendra Sandhu's 70's thriller Agent Vinod, Sriram Raghavan promises a mix of Bond and bourne with this Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor starrer. At an estimated budget of Rs 40 crore expect a fast-paced edge of the seat thriller shot across the globe. Agent Vinod will also be Saif's second home production.
The only big political drama lined up for 2010 is Prakash Jha's Rajneeti starring Ajay Devgan, Nana Patekar, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Manoj Bajpai. After the success of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, the stakes are high on this one where both Ranbir and Katrina play non-glamorous roles.
Hrithik Roshan starrer and long-in-the-making Rs 60-crore film Kites will finally see the light of the day by April next year. This is Anurag Basu's first big budget action thriller which also marks the debut of Mexican beauty Barbara Mori. An international version of the film is currently being cut by Hollywood director Bret Ratner.
Hrithik will also be seen in an intense love story in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish in which he plays a paraplegic. Produced by UTV Motion Pictures, the casting coup is his pairing with Aishwarya Rai. The couple has previously shared great chemistry and box office success with Dhoom 2 and Jodhaa Akbar.
Other than these biggies, some of the out of the box projects to watch out for are - producer Aamir Khan's Delhi Belly and Peepli Live, Dibakar Bannerjee's experimental digital film Love Sex Aur Dhokha, Bachchan and Ben Kingsley starrer Teen Patti, Ram Gopal Varma's gangster drama Rakta Charitra, Vishal Bhardwaj's production Ishqiya and Farhan Akhtar-Deepika Padukone starrer Kartik Calling Kartik.

1 Jan – News from Mumbai has it that box office ace Aamir Khan's "3 Idiots" have registered the highest grossing opening weekend ever for an Indian film internationally. It raked in 1 billion rupees according to Reliance Big Pictures and overtook the previous record set by "Ghajini", also starring the versatile actor. The achievement comes on the back of robust business in Malaysia and Singapore reported by Cinema Online previously. According to senior cinema supervisor Jeya Ganesh of TGV Capsquare in Kuala Lumpur: "We had to open two halls for the opening midnight show on Christmas eve. Now this movie has become the best ever for this cinema, surpassing "Singh Is Kinng" even." Regional film distributor Antenna Entertainments confirmed that the title is doing extremely well in five prints nationwide in Malaysia, while many slots are sold out in Singapore. The popular comedy is playing only at TGV CapSquare, TGV Sunway, GSC Mid Valley, Cathay City Square Johor and Big Cinemas Lotus Five Stars Bukit Jambul Penang in Malaysia, while in Singapore it is available at GV Tampines, GV Yishun and Jade Theatre. Box office charts in Malaysia last week indicated that "3 Idiots" playing at only five locations outperformed Malaysia's own Yasmin Ahmad movie "Muallaf" with 16 prints. Bollywood is becoming big business. Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots has created Bollywood history by raking in a record Rs 240 crore from box office collections in both the domestic and the international markets. This is the highest revenue earned by any Indian-made film. Moreover, these record-breaking collections are only for the first 10 days of exhibition. The film is still running to packed houses. With this, Khan has broken his own record set by Ghajini last year.
Ghajini’s domestic and international collections grossed a total of Rs 225 crore, with Gadar, starring Sunny Deol, netting Rs 175 crore and Hritik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer Dhoom 2 recording total box office sales of Rs 145 crore
