Bollywood's biggest upsets so far

The second half of 2009 is perhaps the most cramped and worst period in the history of Bollywood. The feud between the film producers and multiplexes owners made the first half of the year dull, and thus pushed all the films to the second half. But the worst news for Bollywood is the failure of big banner films.
Chandni Chowk To China: It was said to be largely an autobiographical film; a complete Akshay Kumar flick with lots of comedy, emotion and action. Deepika Padukone's character was also talked about like never before. But unfortunately, director Nikhil Advani failed to give a well-knitted story, and thus a big disappointment at the box-office.

Billu: This film failed in spite of the extended appearance from Shahrukh Khan. Produced by Gauri Khan and directed by Priyadarshan, it featured Irrfan Khan and Lara Dutta in the lead roles. It flopped in spite of releasing on February 13, Valentine's Day eve.

Delhi 6: The hype around the film was good. People talked a lot about the new pair Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor. But director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra of Rang De Basanti fame made a mess of himself with a poor story.

8x10 Tasveer: This action thriller starring Akshay Kumar and Ayesha Takia was a big disappointment. 8x10 Tasveer makers Percept Picture Company faced a loss of over Rs.40 crore.

Dil Bole Hadippa: It was supposed to be the comeback film of Rani Mukherjee (as claimed by the media) though she had gone nowhere. The hype around the film was great and Rani's Sardar avatar was talked about like there was no other plot worth discussing. Even Shahid Kapoor, who was fresh from the success of Kaminey, failed to save the film. The film went down the drains and so too Rani.

What’s Your Raashee?: So what if it's a Ashutosh Gowariker's film? The director boasted that Priyanka Chopra would bag many awards for her role in the film but he went into hiding after the disappointing opening of the film. Priyanka's pairing with her supposed-to-be boyfriend Harman Baweja failed again after Love Story 2050.

Blue: Hype may help in making a good opening but it just make a film a hit. Blue is a big flop in spite of its makers claiming that it witnessed a good opening. This film starring Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Zayed Khan, Lara Dutta and Katrina Kaif promised breath-taking underwater stunts but it failed to convince the film lovers.

London Dreams: This Bollywood musical starring Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn and Asin Thottumkal of Ghajini fame failed to live up to the expectations. So much was talked about the film including the chemistry between Salman and Asin but everything was a farce. Vipul Shah failed to pull the the film lovers to the theatres.

Aladin: The film failed in spite of the presence of superstar Amitabh Bachchan in the role of a genie. It also featured Riteish Deshmukh and Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandez in the lead roles. This film on kids also targeted the adults but it failed to please any section of the audience.

KURBAAN MOVIE REVIEW

By Taran Adarsh, November 19, 2009 - 15:14 IST
MOVIE RATING : 4/5

Post 9/11, there's anger, distrust, suspicion, uneasiness all around. Not a day passes when you don't hear of terrorists killing civilians in the name of religion.

Many storytellers have, in the past, narrated stories about terrorists and their nefarious and despicable plans. But let me state one thing categorically. You haven't watched a more profound, a more thought-provoking, a more dramatic story on this subject before KURBAAN. It's not just the most powerful film to come out of Dharma Productions, it's the most powerful film to come out of the Hindi film industry this year, thus far.

Write your own movie review of Kurbaan KURBAAN tries to penetrate into the psyche of not just the terrorist, but also someone who has been a helpless spectator all this while. This film is sure to spark off discussions and debates, although it must also be noted that it doesn't take sides or gets preachy.

Rensil D'Silva has chosen a burning issue for his directorial debut, which is a complete departure from Karan Johar's earlier films. For some inexplicable reasons, parallels are being drawn with FANAA and NEW YORK , but the fact remains that barring the backdrop of terrorism, there's no similarity with those films.

I've often felt that certain films are beyond box-office. Movies are not meant to merely entertain, but enlighten and educate as well. They need to prick your conscience and in the process, make an attempt to make this world a better place. KURBAAN does just that and for this very reason, it deserves a double thumbs up.

Final word? Drop everything else you're doing to watch KURBAAN. Movies like these need to be made, encouraged and lauded.

Avantika is a teacher at a university in Delhi. She has come back from New York where she teaches, because her father has suffered a heart attack. During this period, she meets a Professor called Ehsaan Khan . Soon, they begin seeing each other and love blossoms.

A few months later, Avantika receives a call from her university in New York, asking her to come back. Avantika breaks the news to Ehsaan. He, in turn, tells her he doesn't mind coming to the States with her. But first they need to get married.

Soon after the marriage, they leave to start a new life in New York. They buy a house in an Indian neighbourhood and move in. Just as they are setting up home, their conservative Muslim neighbours invite them over for dinner. The next morning, Salma , one of the women Avantika met the night before at the dinner, visits her under the pretext of gifting her sweets.

When Avantika invites her in, Salma tells her that she is in grave danger. Nothing is what it seems. Salma pleads with Avantika to help her. What follows next is a series of incidents that sucks Avantika into a vortex of danger and intrigue. As her life spirals out of control, Avantika realizes that she is a pawn in a huge game.

KURBAAN has two stories running concurrently - the love story between Saif and Kareena and the story of Islamic terrorists. Rensil sets the stage in the initial 15 minutes itself, after which there's a twist in the tale every 15-20 minutes, which catches you completely unaware. Rensil doesn't borrow from the past, which makes the proceedings thoroughly captivating.

The highpoint is the 35-minute climax, which leaves you spellbound. The culmination to the story shakes you completely, largely because it's pragmatic and has been executed most logically as well. In fact, filming the climax at the various underground tube stations must've been the toughest challenge for the director.

On the flip side, KURBAAN caters more to the intelligentsia or the thinking viewer and might not be lapped up whole-heartedly by those who survive on the staple diet of hardcore masala fares.

Some of the finest technicians in the business are associated with KURBAAN. Hemant Chaturvedi's cinematography is super. The film bears an international look all through. Salim-Sulaiman's music is well integrated in the narrative. At least two tracks merit a mention - 'Shukran Allah' and 'Ali Maula'. Anurag Kashyap and Niranjan Iyengar's dialogue are superb. The lines enhance the impact of several sequences. Thrills are, again, in sync with the mood of the film.

KURBAAN is embellished with superlative performances. Saif is extra-ordinary in a role that only proves his versatility once again. If he won your heart with a winning performance in LOVE AAJ KAL a few months ago, you need to watch this supremely talented actor underplay his part so beautifully in KURBAAN. As for Kareena, KURBAAN reiterates one fact yet again: She's the best in the business. No two opinions on that! Watch her get those emotional sequences right, it's incredible. Here's a performance that truly merits the highest praise and admiration, besides fetching her awards and accolades.

Vivek Oberoi is fantastic. Matching Saif and Kareena at every step, KURBAAN should be the turning point in Vivek's career. It's a difficult role to portray and only an actor with a wide range could've portrayed this part so effectively. Om Puri is top notch and so is Kirron Kher. Kirron is marvellous, especially in the penultimate scene. Dia Mirza, Nauheed Cyrusi and Kulbhushan Kharbanda lend credibility to their brief roles.

On the whole, KURBAAN is the most powerful film to come out of the Hindi film industry in 2009, so far. The film has a captivating plot, gripping screenplay, super performances and a climax that shakes you up completely. Watching this movie should be on top of your agenda this week.

ANOTHER GREAT REVIEW

It’s after ages; I watched a Kareena Kapoor movie in the cinema. After Tashan and that was a long time. And it is for the firs time possibly when I waited for a Kareena movie for so long and it turned out to be good. I had high expectations from Kurbaan , not only did the movie meet them but it also surpassed them.

Kurbaan is the story of Avantika Ahuja and Ehsaan Khan and how he turns out to be a terrorist and the rest all of us know. Kurbaan shows the other side of Islamic Fundamentalism which is rarely seen in films and the best part is , it gets the message right unlike New York which had the message to be very confusing.

Also Kurbaan has its thrills and you are at the edge of the seat especially in the last 30 mins.

The writing is perfect and so are the dialogues which suit the movie very well. Movie has a very international look.

My favourite scenes (SPOILERS AHEAD):
The last scene
The classroom scene
Viveiks talk with his father in the beginning
Saif Ali Khans discovery of what Om Puri is about to do
Kiron Kher talking about the death of her brothers
FINISHED

The music is well suited even tough Dua wasn’t required

However , it is the performances and direction which make the movie what it is
All the actors have performed fantastically . Om Puri and Kiron Kher are in great roles . Specially Kiron Kher , loved her she was absolutely mindblowing specially in the last scenes . Viveik Oberio is back and this is the role that he needed to be back . Another great performance. Saif Ali Khan puts another great performance and it is restrained and you never feel he is Saif and you actually hate him .

But it is Kareena Kapoor who steals the show
Avantika is no Geet but it is a far more difficult role to play and this is Kareenas best performance so far . The last scene is fantastic and Id say it to be the best scene of the year and Kurbaan proves that Bebo is the best actress around.

However , It is Renzil De silva who is the star and should be credited for making sucha brilliant film . He will go placesss !

Overall , Watch Kurbaan because not does it only entertain but also educates .
4/5

Kurbaan! Are we sacrificing our innocence? Some sacrifices give birth to Roses

though the thorns come out before the flowers.

26/11 Mumbai terror attack shook the nation for a long time. Slowly but steadily the shocks are getting cured but not the wounds. The culprits behind it are still at large and the administration is trying hard to find the roots. As the anniver

View next photo sary of the brutal terror incident is approaching, Kurbaan is bringing us memories of the 26/11 but restrict itself in dealing with the root cause and how innocents are trapped in the merciless drama.

The movie asks few right on target questions, like: ‘who really created terrorism?’ ‘Who is breeding them now?’ Why killing innocents? Aren’t these terrorist bye products of ‘greed’ by powerful nations? ‘Those who fight in the name of religion, are you considering value of an innocent human soul?’ ‘Those who do terrorism in the name of religion, do they understand the religion in well?’

Eshaan(Saif Ali Khan), is the newly appointed professor in a college where Avantika (Kareena Kapoor) is working. Eshaan is very determined and successful in getting things done in his ways, either by bright words or by crux. They fall in love where Eshaan manage to fascinate Avanthika easily. Avantika a US passport holder was called back by the university to complete the next semester and Eshaan don’t want to live separately from her. They both land up in US with a dream to live together. Watch the movie for the rest, where I didn’t touch the suspense of the movie, but the first 40 minute of the film.

First 40 minutes of the movie simply sail smooth and place the audience in a sweet romantic mood with a sizzling Saif-Kareena pair. Soon the audience realise that this was only a sweet silence before a cyclone. It comes with all the power and took away so many lives. You survive to witness the climax but is there silence left in you? The silence, will it bring the soul we lost in the cyclone??

I simply cannot believe that this is a film by a new comer director. I wonder ‘what is the worth of experience?’, if newcomers can direct with this perfection! Keeping my reservations, the direction of the movie is superb!! The director, Rensil D’Silva succeeds in getting best out of almost all departments. Let it be casting, performance, the script, screen play, dialogues technical side, music, BGM, choreography all are stamped with Very Good or Excellence on it.

Saif Ali Khan gives a performance which one expects from him – i.e. nothing short of excellence. Initially it was little odd to get adjusted to the ‘thin’ saif – but he kept his cool and the character stay safe in his hand. Kareena rocks! The actress gone a step further and gives excellent performance. (Katrina, the fight is not over yet, but still very much on!) The combination scenes between Saif and Kareena is simply superbas the director used best use of the ‘Chemistry.
Vivek Oberoi did a good job. His presence gave the much needed importance to the character. However, have to admit that the character was a let down by the writers and was a compromise. For Dia Mirza, I really wished she had a normal role in the film than the guest appearance. Om Puri, Kiron Kherr and rest of the cast did their roles well.

Cinematography is word class. The camera succeeds in finger printing all the emotions with excellent perfection. Superb!!

Music of the film was very good and gives music to the mood of the film. The songs and choreography were much focusing on the theme and the director is quite right on that. Back ground music need special mention as they were effective. Editing is one area the film could have been improved. It was good in the first half, but it could have been much better in the second.

4/5

The much-awaited release of the year — Kurbaan — which won rave reviews has been welcomed by the audience.
Filmmaker Karan Johar is excited with the response that the film has garnered in its opening week. Not jut the weekend bookings, but even the paid previews saw a massive booking. The collections we hear are the highest this year. The Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor starrer has made its mark at the box office this weekend.
Besides the huge opening, a astounding 1,500 prints were released all over India, which is among the highest ever released at one time. Karan has every reason to celebrate with this movie that saw Dharma Productions venturing into yet another genre and hitting the bull's eye.
