Father in Sweden child abuse case to be released today BY QISHIN TARIQ PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian father jailed for hitting his children in Sweden is set to be released Wednesday, and will be able to return home in time for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Azizul Raheem Awalluddin (pic), a Tourism Malaysia director in Stockholm, is expected to be released at 11am local time (around 5pm Malaysian time), confirmed a source from the Tourism Ministry.
However, Azizul's wife Shalwati Nurshal will remain in prison, as she has three months left to serve of her sentence. The Malaysian Embassy in Sweden has not given a reply on the matter, and is awaiting confirmation of Azizul’s release. On March 28, the Solna District Court jailed Azizul for 10 months and sentenced Shalwati to 14 months prison. Taking into account the three months the couple had already spent in detention during the trial, plus early release for good behavior, Azizul and Shalwati would actually only serve about three months and six months, respectively. The court also ordered Shalwati and Azizul to pay their children 67,200 SEK (RM33,900) and 36,400 SEK (RM18,362), respectively. On Feb 10, Shalwati and Azizul were charged with multiple counts of gross violation of a child’s integrity, by hitting and abusing their children. The offences took place in the family’s home in Spånga, a Stockholm suburb, between Sept 15, 2010 and Dec 17, 2013. Sweden has outlawed corporal punishment since 1979, and is known to punish offenders heavily. |
