Teacher sues mother who promised he could marry eight-year-old pupil when she came of age after she fails to stick to their ‘deal’ after years of financial support
A former kindergarten teacher is suing a mother who agreed to let him marry her 8-year-old daughter after she failed to keep up her end of the bargain. The man, named as Chu in local reports, worked at a kindergarten in Taipei, Taiwan, 11 years ago when he met the girl, reportedly called Chi, and 'fell in love'. He approached the mother and she agreed that, once Chi was turned 17, Chu, aged 32 at the time, would marry her. She had a child after marrying a man, aged 16, other than Chu In exchange, Chu bought Chi presents and took her on outings, as well as paying for her tuition and living costs and clearing her mother's debts. He claims to have shelled out a total of 900,000 Taiwanese dollars (￡17,663). However, two years ago, checking the then 17-year-old's Facebook page, he discovered a picture of his betrothed cradling a baby and, after confronting the mother, was told she had secretly married another man the year before. Local media reports that the girl never knew of the agreement. Chu says the mother has broken the terms of their contract and took her to court to claim the money back. He told the judge: 'I was stunned. Her mother had strung me along for years promising me that she would be mine when she was 17. I immediately knew that she was the perfect one for me when I first saw her even though she was very young. I am not a child abuser, I was happy to wait, and so I agreed a deal with her mother. In order to financially support them and help them out of the difficulties I would be able to marry her when she came of age.' However, the court did not rule in his favour, pointing out that parents are not able to promise their children for marriage and declaring the verbal agreement void. As such, the judge ruled no fraud had taken place and Chu was not entitled to his money.  Chi was only eight years old when Chu 'fell in love' with her while she was one of his pupils  The teacher approached the mother and struck a deal that once Chi turned 17 he would marry her  Chu said he had watched the girl grow up, always believing she would, one day, be his wife  The courts have thrown out Chu's claim, saying parents cannot pledge their children to marriage The former teacher also produced a written contract but the authenticity of this is disputed as the mother is allegedly illiterate and the contract says it was signed in 2012, after the girl had married another man. Even if it is real, the court has ruled that the agreement violates public morals and so should not be honoured. Chu is reportedly planning to appeal the decision.
