SARIKEI: A 34-year-old man from Pakan suffered a broken left leg and other injuries, including to his head, after a metal event truss collapsed and fell on him.
The structure had been erected for the official launching ceremony of a Pan Borneo Highway project in Durin near here on Sunday to display a poster to welcome Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Sandai Randi was among the few who had arrived early at the site around 6.30am.
“It was just unfortunate that Sandai was at the wrong place and at the time when the heavy metal structure fell on him,” said Sandai’s relative Boos Tutong.
“Fortunately, the mishap occurred when the crowd had just started to build up. If it were to happen when the Prime Minister had arrived and when the site was packed, it could have turned the event into a tragic affair as many visitors could have been crushed under the structure.”
Boos said he lodged a report on the mishap at the Sibu Jaya police station the same day.
“We want the event organiser and all parties concerned to be held responsible for the mishap. Such incidents could have been avoided if all safety aspects were strictly observed,” he said.
He added that an official representing the event organiser had chipped in a sum to assist with Sandai’s medical expenses. - Sarawak News
