'Having a degree doesn't promise you a job' - Malaysian Employers
KUALA LUMPUR: Many employers now believe that possessing a degree does not guarantee a person his or her dream job.
This was the challenge that graduates these days are faced with, Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) executive director, Datuk Shamsuddin Bardan said.
"To get a job today is very challenging. Currently, we have some 200,000 degree holders who are unemployed.
"However, this doesn't mean that employers don't take paper qualification into account at all; it all depends on the degree holders if they are willing to be employed in a position lower than expected.
"Employers right now are focusing on those who are willing to start at lower positions. We prioritise those who enter at the lower level and then earn their way up," he told Astro AWANI when contacted.
Shamsuddin's comments came on the heels of a newspaper report which stated that having a degree was not the priority for international agencies when hiring new blood.
Citing some foreign companies as examples, the report claimed that individual skill sets were their top priority right now.
Shamsuddin said, employers were not undertaking any risk when they take in overqualified people.
"An employer will take into account the employee's motivation and dedication, and if the worker fulfills the needs of the employer, then their position will be elevated faster.
"However, there's nothing much an employer can do if a position they need filled does require a specific qualification," he said.
Shamsuddin had last year urged the government to not just look at the overall unemployment rate but get to know who make up the bulk of the numbers.
In an October report last year, he had said of the 400,000 people jobless in Malaysia, more than half of them were diploma and degree holders.

betoi la tu..ada degree jangan duk berangan dapat keje gaji 3,4K terus 
i pon lepas grad dulu keje admin asst je..gaji tak sampai 2k pastu lompat la keje untuk better future
sesetengah orang tak berani nak amek risiko tukar keje..tapi bagi i sampai bila nak stuck kat tempat yang sama kan  |

aku dulu gj rm1.5k tahun 2005.... ambik je..... cari pengalaman dulu..... sbb ko keje takleh expect ade yg sudi ajo 24jam.... rasa2 tak brp ade skill.... kul 10 mlm br balik.... sbb time lepas office hour la org ade masa nak train ke apa.... tahun2 awal ni la yg penting utk bina kerjaya tuh.....
jgn trus berangan nak beli kereta yg nak class sejajar ngan degree..... amik kancil pun takpe.... pedulikan org kg yg mulut murai dok tanya ade degree pakai kancil je? pedulikan.... yg penting save duit..... diorg bkn tahu apa..... org melayu ni most nak tunjuk jah..... wpun bank account kekeringan

I pon lps grad jd kerani swasta je ...padahal diploma holder kotttt ...tp istiqomah buat keje n leh kumpul sikit2 nk kawin n hidup sgt biasa2 je xhrp duit family even my family org berada |

sis, kakak memang setuju bener, kerna kakak dulu pun grad pada saat2 negara sedang dilanda kegawatan, apa kerja yg kakak tak buat? lab assistant (pada masa tu lab assistant cuma perlu spm jah)... guru tuisyen, management trainee yg gaji sesendu RM450 sebulan, trainee engineer yg gaji cuma RM1100....kakak bermula dari bawah sis sehinggalah kakak berada pada tahap sekarang....
so nasihat akak pada adik2 dan anak2 semua, jgn memilih kerja.....yg penting timba pengalaman....

sis, kakak memang setuju bener, kerna kakak dulu pun grad pada saat2 negara sedang dilanda kegawa ...
Tak ada perigi lagi nak ditimba kak, org sekarang pakai paip je, putar kepala paip keluar air, tak ada timba- timba dah |

sbb yg aku tgk byk mcm tu nak gj tinggi.... skill belum diuji lg..... keje ni bkn tmpt nak training nak disuap mcm time bljr
yg penting tahan kena maki..... aku dah kje ngan seme bangsa jd bos.... klau silap jgn melawan..... klau btul pun jgn lwn..... bos taknak tahu reason... depa nak output jah..... so fresh grad dr takdak duit.... keje la apa saja.... pedulikan gah degree pointer tinggi tu....

tp mmg bos khennnn mana mau terima klau die tak berapa reti.... nak puji susah sgt2.....
so bbdk fresh grad ni jgn la berangan sgt.... korg kena alami seme ni dulu.... lepas tu br demand....
