Their worlds couldn’t have been further apart. She’s a model turned actress and now fashion designer and film producer to add on to her impressive list of credentials. Ever since winning Miss Charm International in 1990, she has lived her entire adult life in the spotlight.

He’s all man, a fitness fanatic and geologist who wouldn’t look out of place on the pages of GQ Magazine.

But when cupid draws back his bow and decides to intervene, what’s meant to be cannot be denied. Theirs is a love story which could only have been orchestrated by the divinities.

Back to earth and I’m sitting in Zenzero Restaurant & Wine Bar in the heart of Kuala Lumpur waiting for Kavita Sidhu and her fiancé Roberto Guiati to arrive.

Very soon, Kavita turns up in a flurry, her luscious caramel-highlighted hair billowing in the wind.

“I’ve just finished doing my hair and make-up,” she says breathlessly. “I have to look good for The Star,” she adds, flashing her megawatt smile. No worries on that front because she’s in full-on glamour mode, with her cover girl-worthy cheekbones and never-ending legs while her willowy frame is in a psychedelic print jersey gown which accentuates all her curves in the right places.

Trailing closely behind her is Guiati and he’s easy on the eye too, with impeccable manners to boot. Fellow diners look up at them and heads turn.

It appears that the dish of the day isn’t one that’s served on a plate on this afternoon.

There’s no denying that Kavita and Guiati make a handsome couple and in terms of this most fortunate combination of genes, these two take the cake.

Sitting across from them, I’m heady from all that beauty around me and the Bellini I’ve just sipped doesn’t seem to help. But I steady myself and ask the lovebirds what everyone wants to know – how did they meet?

“We met through friends,” replies Guiati, as if it was the most natural thing in the world while Kavita adds that he’s been living in KL for nine years already. “We met eight years ago and knew each other before we started dating which was about four and a half years ago,” she says.

Was it love at first sight though? Guiati takes the lead and admits it was an immediate attraction for him.

“I was definitely attracted when I first laid eyes on Kavita but I thought there’s no way she would be interested in me,” he says with a grin.

“It wasn’t because I was intimidated with her and what she does. It’s just that I wasn’t used to the circle she moves in and the world in which she inhabits.”

While Kavita is a well-known personality celebrated for her beauty and celebrity status on home turf, the more pressing curiosity I have is about the man who managed to capture her heart.

Who is this tall, dark, dashing stranger? Turns out, he’s as regular as you can get.

Born in the medieval town of Ferrara in Italy about an hour’s drive from Venice, Guiati is from a typical close-knit Italian family and the youngest child with an elder brother and sister. His father has a construction company specialising in reconstructing and retaining Italian heritage while his mother is a school teacher.

He went to the University of Ferrara where he graduated with a degree in geological science. He began working in a lab as a geologist for a civil engineering company but soon moved into sales for the oil and gas industry as being stuck wearing a white coat wasn’t his idea of his career direction.

In 2008, Guiati started working for a Malaysian manufacturer of valves for the oil and gas industry handling the Middle East region, which brought him to KL. Currently, he’s working for the KL regional office of Pibiviesse, an Italian manufacturer of engineered valves for upstream application, where he is developing the Asia Pacific markets.

He’s also the co-owner of Zenzero Restaurant (with Kavita and her brother) and they have plans for expansion soon.

It’s easy to label Guiati as another chiselled hunk just because he’s buff and square-jawed as well as an athlete who played semi-professional football at university.

But beneath that alpha-male façade, I sense a sensitive soul who’s also highly ambitious and driven to succeed in every area of his life. And who better to describe him than the woman he’s planning to share his life with.

“Robbie is so unassuming and humble which is what got me in the first place,” she muses.

“He doesn’t say much and he’s not boastful and he is a really positive person. With all the challenges we face in life, it was so refreshing when I met him with his positive outlook. We discuss and talk things through and never really argue; he has all the qualities I imagined a man should have.”

And what Kavita is talking about isn’t confined to the superficial. “Coming from the fashion world, I’m blasé about looks and the physical is not something I am normally attracted to in a person,” she confesses.

But Guiati is honest and says it was Kavita’s beauty which sparked his interest in the first place.

“When I first saw her, I went ‘Whoa!’” he says with a cheeky laugh, to which Kavita adds: “But we were both very cool though and we didn’t show it.”

Guiati continues: “When we first met, I had just arrived and I was very focused on my career and travelling so having a relationship was the last thing on my mind. It was only later when I was more settled that I was ready.”

Kavita accedes that it was the same scenario for her. “That really helped as both of us got to know each other at a slow pace. It served us well because you get to see the consistency of the person and whether that is what we imagined it to be. We weren’t rushing into it.”

But what gave Guiati that push to ask her out? “She gave me signals and I knew then I had a chance,” his says with a twinkle in his eyes.

“I’ve never met anyone quite like her and I won’t find another one like her for sure.” He sounds smitten and he’s also a romantic which Kavita confirms, saying he was very old-school during their courting, sending her flowers and taking her on dinner dates.

And when did he pop the question to her? Were there fireworks?

“It was while we were on holiday in Phuket on the last week of July,” Guiati recalls.

Kavita continues: “It wasn’t a big gesture and I think that suits our style as we are quite private and we like to keep things simple. It was over dinner and Robbie asked if I wanted to move in with him and as open-minded as I am, being Asian, that was something I don’t think my parents would be happy with.” So she told Guiati she would only move in with him if they were married and that left him only one choice – to propose to her, which he did.

Glancing at the sparkling brilliant-cut diamond on her left hand, there are no prizes for guessing what her answer was. “Having been together with Kavita for some time, getting married is a natural step. To me, the commitment is the same whether we are married or not. A piece of paper doesn’t make me more committed than I already am.”

With the benefit of maturity, not just chronologically but also in mind and spirit, both Kavita and Guiati have approached their union in a grounded and practical fashion.

“I was very careful when I accepted his marriage proposal,” Kavita confides. “I know life is full of risks but I am cautious when it comes to marriage because you will be living with this person for the rest of your life. I needed to have that absolute sense of security, knowing that Robbie had my back. That whatever happens, he is going to be there.”

And what does Guiati look for in a wife and life partner? “Someone who supports me in every way. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Kavita. She pushes me in a positive way and helps me go beyond my comfort zone.”

Guiati then tells me the qualities which attracted him to Kavita. “She is not possessive at all. She gives me my space. She understands my career is my priority at this point. She’s so easy to be around. I had a past relationship with a girl who didn’t like me spending time with my friends because she couldn’t accept that I could enjoy my time without her. And the more she did that, the more she pushed me away.”

Kavita cites trust as a major building block in sustaining a healthy relationship, saying she’s fine about Guiati’s socialising for business. “We own this restaurant and Robbie socialises a lot for work. I’ll go crazy if I worried about every woman that spoke to him. You got to give people room to breathe because they need to do what they do. You can’t stop them from living their life. I’m totally chill about it.”

Their impending nuptials on Jan 8 is a lavish affair in the ballroom of the Grand Hyatt in KL.

Of course, Kavita’s parents (Datuk Dr Joginger Singh and Datin Dr Prabha Joginder Singh) will be there while Guiati’s parents (Vincenzo Guiati and Valentina Rossi) are flying in for this happy occasion.

The bride will be wearing a couture wedding gown she designed herself and Guiati will be in a navy Ermenegildo Zegna suit. They are also planning an Italian wedding in Guiati’s hometown at the end of May.

Both of them happen to be the youngest child in their respective families. “My parents adore him,” Kavita says, recounting the apprehension she felt when she first introduced Guiati to them. “He told me he’s great at winning over parents and I asked him how many parents he has won over!” she laughs.

“We haven’t decided where to go for our honeymoon yet,” Guiati says. “After our wedding, I have a business trip to the US.”

And what about starting a family? How many children do they want?

“I’ll be happy if I have one,” answers Kavita. “We’ll start immediately!” concurs Guiati.
