Malaysia FA Cup final: Amri will be Lions' hero says Quak
Gabriel Quak is confident that Khairul Amri can be the difference when LionsXII take on Kelantan in the FA Cup final on Saturday. Photo credit: LionsXII.
Winger Gabriel Quak believes Khairul Amri will be the difference when LionsXII take on Kelantan FA in the 2015 Malaysia FA Cup final in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday night.
The Singapore side booked their spot after prevailing on away goals in a 4-4 draw on aggregate with Terengganu in their semifinal. After a 2-1 first leg win at Jalan Besar Stadium on May 9, they rode their luck in a 3-2 loss in the second leg at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium last Saturday
Having played a pivotal role in both matches, Quak is ready to conquer the imposing 90,000-seater Bukit Jalil Stadium.
"As footballers, this is the big crowd and big occasion that we dream of," said the fleet-footed wide man. "Personally, it's not an issue. I love playing in front of big crowds. I even like the fact that opposition fans boo me, it makes me want to prove myself even more. And this Saturday, the stadium will have more Kelantan fans because in a way, they are at home, so we need to soak up the atmosphere and use it to our advantage."
Quak has hit a rich vein of form this season, with four goals and one assist -- with two of his goals coming against Kedah and KL Spa in the FA Cup. But he reckons it will be veteran Amri and his strike partner Khairul Nizam who could decide what will be "a final that will have all the ingredients of a classic cup tie".
He added: "When Amri is on form, no one can stop him. What is different this season is that he has forged a good partnership with Nizam. That aside, all of us midfielders must push up and support them whenever they get the ball, because Kelantan are bound to close them down very quickly.
"Amri may be getting most of the credit but Nizam has proved that he can handle playing against big defenders in recent games and what he gives us is the aerial prowess that we don't have much of. So if the two of them can combine again in the final, it is anyone's game to win."
Singapore international Khairul Amri is LionsXII's leading goalscorer in the FA Cup with five goals. Photo credit: LionsXII.
LionsXII may be going into the final full of confidence, but their record suggests otherwise, with only one win and six losses in their previous meetings.
The most recent matchup was on Feb. 15 where they were dealt a 2-0 away loss. Quak, who was in the starting lineup for that game, reckons the LionsXII are a different proposition now. He is adamant that it will not be a repeat of the February result on Saturday.
He said: "In the 2-0 loss against Kelantan, Nizam wasn't fully fit and had to come off in the first half. This game, it will be different.
"Everyone is talking about their foreign strikers but for me, Piya [Badhri Radzi] is the one to watch. He is a player who always rises for the big occasion and his energy in the middle of the park along with his set piece ability makes him special.
"We also have to keep an eye on Wan Zaharulnizam [Zakaria] and Wan Zack [Haikal]. Two players that I know well and are always capable of that something special.
"Having said that, I think our defenders like Madhu [Mohana], Safuwan [Baharudin] and Zul[fahmi] Arifin can handle them. We won't give our game away but it should be a soak and strike tactic, something we have done pretty well this season. It's a final after all, so both teams will be extra cautious."
The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) announced that each team will be allocated 30,000 tickets, with 20,000 going online to neutrals. The 24-year-old said he could not wait to step into the red-hot cauldron of Bukit Jalil, even though it could be a nerve-jangling 90 minutes.
"Singapore fans, Kelantan fans, I just want to play. If these type of matches don't excite you, then you shouldn't be a professional footballer. We promise to do our best. As for the fans, travel safe and see you on Saturday." |

Talisman Amri looking forward to Saturday's final
A hero last Saturday, LionsXII star Amri's buzzing ahead of the Malaysian FA Cup final
May 19, 2015 6:00am
By SHAMIR OSMAN
He stood behind the goal at the Geylang pitch yesterday, both goading and cajoling his teammates, who were still out on the pitch shooting at goal, laughing along with them when shots were scuffed.
This was long after time was called on the LionsXII training session yesterday, and shirtless and still smiling his usual broad smile, there was something a little different about Khairul Amri.
There was a spring in the step of the Singapore international striker, and why not.
There is huge match around the corner, and Singapore's big hope for the big occasion already couldn't hide his excitement.
The LionsXII face Kelantan in the Malaysian FA Cup final at the Bukit Jalil Stadium on Saturday, and in a chat with The New Paper yesterday, Amri said: "Of course I'm excited. Yes, the LionsXII have won the league before (in 2013) but this is a cup final, and a Singapore team hasn't been in a (Malaysian domestic) final for 21 years.
"When I was growing up, all people would talk about was that Malaysia Cup final, how special it was, how it's a part of our history - I want that feeling."
That final in 1994 saw a Fandi Ahmad-led team write themselves into local football folklore, beating Pahang 4-0 to seal a historic Malaysia Cup and league double, the last time a Singapore team competed in domestic competitions across the Causeway before our return three years ago .
The LionsXII were formed in 2012 and had yet to qualify for a final, until Amri's two spectacular goals last Saturday in the second leg semi-final away to Terengganu ensured his team advanced (4-4 on aggregate) on the away goals rule.
KNACK
Amri has a knack for scoring in finals.
He scored a goal in each of the 2004, 2007 and 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup finals to inspire the national team to victory, and he's looking to dig deep, and find that same player for the big occasion on Saturday.
"The Suzuki Cup is about national pride and I loved every minute of it, but this is just different, somehow," said the 30-year-old, who has not represented any of his four clubs in a cup final.
"This bunch of players can do the
job, it's just a matter of following instructions and putting in effort, and I think we can get the job done, even if (Kelantan) score first in the final," he insisted.
"Seeing the mood in the team, and the confidence that we've had over the last few games, we are not afraid of anyone."
Amri believes that the LionsXII spirit was forged in the fiery second leg fixture in Kuala Terengganu last Saturday, and it has made the team stronger.
"Terengganu equalised very quickly after I scored the opening goal, and we started to worry, and they equalised again (in the 60th minute) after I scored the second goal. I remember looking at the clock every time, and thinking: why is time passing so slowly," he recalled.
"At the back of my head was that loss to ATM in the (2012) Malaysia Cup semi-final, but I believed we could do it."
Under V Sundramoorthy then, the LionsXII were on their way into the Malaysia Cup final, but conceded a goal after seven minutes of time added on at the end of the game.
They went on to lose on penalties.
This time it is already different, because the LionsXII are in the final.
Amri echoed the words of head coach Fandi, calling for calm.
"We just need to play without putting pressure on ourselves and enjoy our football. We are the underdogs anyway, and we've got nothing to lose," said Amri.
"You know what will make the difference... If half of Bukit Jalil is filled by Singaporean fans - I heard in 1994 more than half of the people (at the Shah Alam final) were our people.
"I hope our fans come, I would really love to score a goal in the final and win in front of Singaporeans."

Some 30,000 tickets have been allocated for each team's fans, and the remainder 20,000 tickets are available online.

2 Khairul Mesti Dikekang
KOTA BHARU - Dua tonggak Lions XII Mohd. Khairul Nizam dan Mohd. Khairul Amri Mohd.
“Paling hampir sekarang Piala FA. Jika keseluruhan pasukan menunjukkan komitmen tinggi seperti ketika menewaskan Pahang tempoh hari, in sya Allah rezeki memihak kepada kita untuk bergelar juara nanti,” ujarnya.

Amri bakal robek Kelantan – Gabriel
21 Mei 2015 12:48 AM
SINGAPURA – Pemain sayap, Gabriel Quak percaya Mohd. Khairul Amri Mohd.
– AGENSI

Kelantan lega semua pemain cergas

Kecik Idam Jaring Gol Di Bukit Jalil
Kecik berkata segala pengalamannya ketika beraksi bersama Harimau Muda A akan dimanfaat sebaik mungkin.

ramalan awal berdasarkan defend kelate yg sedikit angai (walopun attacking amutu/kecik/wan zack/paan mantop) dan lions12 yg berdisiplin tinggi, aku rasa lions12 mng 1-0 jah kot...dgn adegan menyerang bertubi2 kelate, lions12 dgn rilek mkn kuaci tepi pdg defend giler2 n skali skala counter attack dan parking bas lps dpt 1 gol
tp jauh di sudut hati mau kelate menang 3-0 lg agar layak ke piala afc thn depan |
