Tom Cruise to star in Japanese sci-fi saga Yukikaze

Tuesday 16 April 2013 10.51 BST

After success with Oblivion, the 50-year-old actor is to take on another dystopian-future tale, this time an adaptation of Chōhel Kamayashi's novels

Tom Cruise is to follow up the blockbuster opening for dystopian tale Oblivion at the weekend with yet another science-fiction project, the Japanese saga Yukikaze.

Studio Warner Brothers has optioned the rights to a series of novels by Chōhel Kamayashi which have already been adapted into five acclaimed anime films for the home video market, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The saga centres on a planetary defence force which fights back against alien invasion by setting up bases on the extra-terrestrials' home world, using a wormhole over Antarctica. Yukikaze is the name of the advance reconnaissance fighter plane used by the series' hero on many of his missions.

Science-fiction films are becoming a feature of the current Cruise era. Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion, in which he plays a drone repairman patrolling a long-abandoned Earth, opened with a spectacular $61m worldwide at the weekend and has not yet made its US bow. The film, which co-stars Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough, has proven a box-office hit despite middling reviews.

Next up for the 50-year-old actor is the Doug Liman sci-fi action piece All You Need Is Kill, in which he stars as a rookie lieutenant colonel forced to fight the same losing battle against alien invaders again and again, experiencing horrifying death countless times. Emily Blunt co-stars as a special forces veteran who has taken out more of the extra terrestrial "mimics" than anyone else. The film is due to arrive in cinemas on both sides of the Atlantic on 7 March.

Yukikaze Novel English Version

Yukikaze - Chōhei Kambayashi

More than thirty years ago a hyper-dimensional passageway suddenly appeared... the first stage of an attempted invasion by an enigmatic alien host. Humanity managed to push the invaders back through the passageway to the strange planet nicknamed " Faery. " Now, Second Lieutenant Rei Fukai carries out his missions in the skies over Faery. His only constant companion in this lonely task is his fighter plane, the sentient FFR-31 Super Sylph, call sign : YUKIKAZE.

Good Luck Yukikaze- Chōhei Kambayashi

The alien JAM have been at war with humanity for over thirty years... or have they ? Rei Fukai of the FAF's Special Air Force and his intelligent tactical reconnaissance fighter plane Yukikaze have seen endless battles, but after declaring " Humans are unnecessary now, " and forcibly ejecting Fukai, Yukikaze is on its own. Is the target of the JAM's hostility really Earth's machines ?

Yukikaze

Artist : TADA Yumi

Year : 2003

Genre : Action, Drama, Josei, Psychological, Sci-fi, Tragedy

Original Publisher : SF Magazine (Hayakawa Publishing)

A coda to the OVA and novel of the same name, this six-chapter manga gives us a deeper glimpse into the back-stories of Rei Fukai, James Bukhar, Tomahawk John, and other members of the F.A.F.

However, some of the details about the characters' pasts and relationships appear to deviate from the sequence of events as seen in the anime. Therefore, this manga should only be read after having first watched the anime or read the novel, and treated as an alternate story of sorts.
