EMINEM BLOCKS CD RELEASE OF 'RACIST' MATERIAL

EMINEM has been granted an injunction against hip-hop magazine THE
SOURCE, blocking the publication from releasing a CD containing
controversial early material from the rapper.

Attorneys for Eminem and his Shady Records label filed the injunction
papers in Manhattan on Monday (December 15), citing copyright
infringement, according to MTV News.

As previously reported on NME.COM, a tape of the rapper's early work
found him branded a racist by The Source last month.

Recorded over ten years ago, the tape in question was played at a
press conference (November 18), where the track, featuring rhymes
disparaging black women, was heard.

In a statement to the American press, Eminem said the song "in no way
represents who I was then or who I am today".

He added: "So while I think common sense tells you not to judge a man
by what he may have said when he was a boy, I will say it straight
up: I am sorry I said those things when I was 16. And I don't want to
let anybody turn this into an opportunity to promote their own
bullshit agenda."

The Source had planned to release the track on a compilation CD to be
given away with the February issue, due out on US news-stands on
January 13.

Eminem's ex ordered to trial on drug charge

Kim Mathers, shown here following a 2001 court appearance in St.
Clair Shores, was ordered by a Warren judge Tuesday to stand trial on
drug charges involving a Sept. 29 hotel party where police found
marijuana and ecstasy.
Eminem's ex-wife, Kimberly Anne Mathers, was ordered by a judge
Tuesday to stand trial on drug charges involving a hotel party where
police confiscated marijuana and ecstasy.

The charge -- maintaining a drug house -- is a misdemeanor punishable
by up to two years in jail and a fine of $25,000. In a brief
appearance in Warren district court, she waived her right to a
probable-cause hearing and was bound over by Judge Dawnn Gruenburg to
Macomb County Circuit Court.

It's the second case pending in circuit court for Mathers, 28. She is
awaiting trial on unrelated charges of possessing 25 grams or less of
cocaine, driving while her license is suspended or revoked, and
failing to yield adequate space to an emergency vehicle.

Last month, Mathers failed to show up in Warren court for the first
scheduled preliminary exam in the hotel party incident. Officials
said she violated a judge's order that she remain under house arrest
by electronic tether after she skipped an earlier court date.

On Thursday, the drug house case was scheduled to be heard by
district Judge Jennifer Faunce. As dozens of defendants and their
families waited for Faunce to take the bench to handle their own
cases, Kimberly Mathers' case was transferred to Gruenburg.

After the former wife of rap superstar Eminem was able to elude the
media spotlight, Gruenburg declined to say why she took the case.

"I'm not answering your question," the judge told The Macomb Daily.

Faunce explained that she was on the phone in her chambers shortly
after 8:30 a.m. when her fellow jurist offered to handle the waiver --
a quick process that involves no testimony from witnesses or police
officers involved in the case. Prosecutors usually offer little
input, unless defense attorneys ask a judge to lower the defendant's
bond.

"She said, 'Do you want it? Do you care?' I said, 'No, I don't
care,'" Faunce said. "I knew it was a waiver, not an (full) exam."

Ms. Mathers' attorney, Michael Sinutko, declined to discuss his
client's case.

David Portuesi, who heads the drug unit for the Macomb County
Prosecutor's Office, is the assistant prosecutor handling the Mathers
case. While waiting initially in Faunce's courtroom, he said he
didn't know where Mathers was during the time she missed hearings in
Warren and Mount Clemens, resulting in two bench warrants for her
arrest.

Portuesi also said he didn't expect to see news photographers for a
swift hearing, and left the courtroom a short time later.

Contacted later at his office, Portuesi said he saw Mathers entering
Gruenburg's courtroom and followed. He refused to comment when asked
if he knew the matter had been transferred to Gruenburg and how it
got to that judge.

No one involved in the case would admit the exam was transferred to
allow Mathers to avoid the media.

The Warren courthouse of the 37th District Court (the court's
jurisdiction includes Center Line) has the largest caseload of any
district court in Macomb County.

Faunce had 36 defendants listed on her morning docket Tuesday, most
of them awaiting exams. She also is handling arraignments this week.
Gruenburg had 33 defendants.

Occasionally one of the four judges will assist another with a heavy
docket, particularly on Tuesdays or Thursdays, when preliminary exams
are held for accused felons.

"It appears to me Judge Gruenburg assisted Judge Faunce, handling
some perfunctory matters, and that's not unusual," court
Administrator James Conrad said.

But it's unusual for a judge to lend a hand even before the other
takes the bench to call their respective first case of the day.
Mathers' case was handled at 8:50 a.m., along with a few others,
Conrad said.

It was not clear whether Mathers, who is free on bond, used the main
public entrance into courthouse and passed through a metal detector
and security personnel, or if she was allowed to use other doors not
open to the public and not manned by court officers.

This beef started when Eminem was reportedly angry that Benzino had given Em only 2 Mics in his magazine "The Source", and Benzino gave his own group four and a half mics and also put himself on the front cover of his own magazine.  Benzino called Eminem a "culture stealer".  Eminem retaliated to this by releasing a diss track on The Shady Records mixtape, called "Nail in the Coffin" on which he ripped Benzino apart with his lyrical attack.  Benzino replied by saying that he would kill Em's daughter and since then Em hasn't replied, although rumour has it that he, 50 Cent and Angie Martinez and bringing out another diss track.  In an interview with Angie Martinez, Benzino accused Eminem of wanting to be a racist and also said that he was ruining the HipHop culture.

Nelly Furtado wants Eminem

It seems that Nelly Furtado who makes diferent world music want to
know and make a song with Eminem. Look at the bold text.

This past Monday afternoon (Dec.8/03) Carly Kincaid was lucky enough
to receive a phone call from none other than Nelly Furtado. Read a
transcript of that interview below:

Carly Kincaid: So you’ve had a pretty busy and exciting couple of
months - you’ve had a baby, a brand new CD. Can you talk a little
about the CD?

Nelly Furtado: Ya, the CD is the latest, sort of, expression of where
I’m at. It kind of reflects on the last 3 years. I reflect on my
whole life. I kind of show people a little bit more the full scope of
my personality. I think on the first album I was pretty young, a lot
of the songs I had written when I was 17 or 18 and they just show the
fun and energetic side of me. Now I’ve grown up a little and am able
to reflect a little more on my life and be a little more honest about
my emotions, which is nice. I really feel like people have to tell
the story of their life before they can move on to other things. So,
this is kind of what I’m doing on Folklore. It’s my own personal
folklore. It’s a fun folklore, though.

CK: You actually changed the name of the CD right before it was
released…

NF: Oh ya, I did. Actually, that’s probably because the recording
process was very short. We did the album very quickly. Because it was
just flowing that way. It just came so quickly. All of a sudden
you’re finished. And the first month I thought I was going to call it
Fresh Off The Boat, but then I realised that Folklore was a better
title. Ya, I kind of just had a change of heart where I found that
folklore was kind of the study of the beliefs of people – my own take
on life and I just thought it was a smoother title.

CK: The first single is Powerless – How did it come about, because
you’ve got tonnes of different instruments – all sorts of things in
there.

NF: Ya, it’s a very fun song. Basically, it’s kind of interesting.
It’s like, I worked with Track and Field again – the same producers I
worked with on my first album. You know, one half of them is Jarvis
Church (Gerald Eaton) from the Philosopher Kings. And you know, we
hooked up the first day in Santa Monica and I just got there and they
just had some lyrics, all the lyrics became Powerless. And I kind of
went “Let’s try break beat, like a hard sort of hip hop break
beat.”.
And we kind of put that up and I thought it’d be cool to juxtapose a
banjo with that and then all of a sudden I kind of sang the melody
over top and then we had this magical song, and it was cool. It was
like this magical first day in the studio. And, you know, banjo is a
fun instrument because in the pop context it just sounds really cool
in the pop song. And you know we’ve got Portuguese recording on the
album, we’ve got Indian tabla drums, ukulele. So, it’s quite an
eclectic mix. Powerless is about celebrating who you are and
celebrating your identity. And, just like taking back and empowering
yourself really, to find out as much about the world as you can.

CK: Do you know what the next single will be? Any hints?

NF: Ya, it’s probably going to be Try.

CK: And that’s about…

NF: That’s track 4. Try is about love. It’s kind of the idea that
when you love someone and they love you, you kind of strive to be a
better person. You never really become another person, but it’s that
striving to be better, that I think defines love. So, that’s what Try
is about.

CK: I read somewhere that you were actually considering not making a
second cd. Is that true, or is that just a complete rumour?

NF: It’s kind of true. I don’t know why, I think I kind of just had a
jaded moment where the music business can get kind of tiring because
it’s your image based but there’s a lot of work involved. It’s
hard
to go out there and sell an album on such a huge level. Sometimes,
you just want to crawl into a cave and just make very, sort of, non
commercial albums and just kind of hang out. I wanted to go back to
university, or whatever. Anyway, it was just a moment I was having,
really. I realised that I can only do what I can do. I think it’s the
demands you put on yourself, too. You want to be so wonderful. You
want to be great, and you want to do everything yourself. And then
you realise, just stick with what you’re good at. For me, I’m good at
writing lyrics. I’m good at writing melodies. And so that’s what I do
in the studio and on this album. I just opened up and wrote all the
songs very quickly with Brian and Gerald. And, you know, I’m only 25
and I’m going to get better at it. And I can only do what I can do.
So Folklore is kind of the best that I had to offer in the time that
I made it, and I’m so proud of this album. I feel like it reminded me
what’s special about making music. It reminded me how lucky I am to
have this great job of putting out records and having people respond
to them. I’m very lucky.

CK: What are you up to now, promotionally? Concerts, tv, what?

NF: I just got off a 3 week sort of whirlwind promotional tour. I was
in London, New York, LA, back to New York. So, I did a bunch of
television. I did the Tonight Show and Regis and Good Morning America
and Top of the Pops.

CK: You were on the Tonight Show, and Madonna was on the same night…

NF: YES! And I choked. I was so nervous. It was pretty insane. I got
to meet her backstage before the show and it was cool because we’re
about the same height and we were looking eye to eye. She was very
sweet.

CK: Who else would you like to meet or work with?

NF: Actually, I’ve never met, I was thinking, I’ve never met Eminem.
That’s be kind of cool. He is great and I love his musics.

CK: A Nelly Furtado/Eminem collaboration…

NF: That’d be fun, wouldn’t it?

CK: In your CD liner notes, you make a mention of David Suzuki’s
Nature Challenge. Is this something you’re involved in?

NF: I did a charity show last December – Actually on my birthday,
when I turned 24, for David Suzuki’s Living Earth Tour, he did across
Canada. And, basically, David Suzuki, to me, represents the new
environmentalism. It’s kind of like a way that every person sort of,
in the world, can be more aware of the earth, to be more aware of the
way we use our resources. Just take little steps every day, in daily
life. You, know, respect the environment a little bit more, whether
it be driving a car less or using less energy in their house or
eating meat less. You know different things. And I just like that
fresh take on it. I think it’s cool that someone like me, kind of
mentions it once and a while because I’m just a normal girl. Like, I
don’t wear underwear made out of hemp, you know. It’s important for
people to realise they don’t have to be so extreme with their
beliefs. They can take little things from different influences and
incorporate them into daily life.

CK: So you can check David Suzuki http://www.davidsuzuki.org.Your site is http://www.nellyfurtado.com/. Brand new, really cool
website. Did you have any sort of influence in designing it?

NF: Ya, we’ve got a lot of great feedback on the website. I really
wanted to create, you know, because there’s so much cool web stuff
going on out there, that I thought, why not incorporate that into my
website. I was just kind of getting sick of the whole really standard
looking websites. So, I just wanted something a little different –
give the fans something a little bit more, you know. To be honest, I
found out some of my fan sites are getting better than my website.

CK: Some of those fansites are incredible…

NF: Ya, I’ve got one that is really good. It’s
http://www.shitontheradio.com/. It’s a really great site. They’re
very up to date.

CK: It has to be good to know people follow you that closely.

NF: Ya, it’s really sweet. You know, it’s everything, I think, if I
didn’t have that, I think it would be a little more discouraging. I
think it’s wonderful. I totally appreciate my fans.

CK: Is it a little scary that they follow you that closely?

NF: Actually, sometimes, they actually know stuff about my career
before I know. That’s when it’s pretty cool. And I’m like WOW! I
kind
of refer people to there sometimes. I think my family routinely
checks it to see what I’m doing.

CK: We thank you very much for your time, Nelly.

NF: Oh, thank you, too. Take care.
