Hanya Kotak Hitam Dapat Selesaikan Misteri MH370

KUALA LUMPUR — Nasib penerbangan MH370 milik
Malaysia Airlines sejak 16 hari lepas, terjawab malam tadi menerusi pengumuman
Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak bahawa penerbangan itu berakhir di
selatan Lautan Hindi.

Berdasarkan rumusan itu hanya kotak hitam pesawat Boeing 777-200ER berkenaan
yang dapat menjawab misteri kehilangannya sejak awal pagi 8 Mac lepas.

Perdana Menteri pada Isnin malam berkata berdasarkan taklimat Cawangan
Siasatan Kemalangan Udara United Kingdom (AAIB) dan analisis lanjut data oleh
Inmarsat, kesimpulan dibuat bahawa MH370 terbang di koridor selatan dan
kedudukan terakhirnya di tengah-tengah Lautan Hindi, barat Perth.

“Kawasan ini merupakan lokasi terpencil, jauh dari sebarang tempat
pendaratan. Oleh itu dengan perasaan amat sedih dan terharu saya ingin
memaklumkan bahawa menurut data terkini, penerbangan MH370 berakhir di selatan
Lautan Hindi,” kata Najib

Pesawat itu yang membawa 227 penumpang dan 12 anak kapal dalam penerbangan
ke Beijing apabila dilapor hilang daripada radar kira-kira 1.30 pagi 8 Mac,
setelah berlepas dari Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa Kuala Lumpur.

Sejak hari pertama kehilangannya, lebih 12 negara membantu Malaysia dalam
misi mencari dan menyelamat pesawat tersebut.

Pada Isnin, pesawat Australia dan China masing-masing mengesan beberapa
objek yang terapung di selatan Lautan Hindi, namun belum diambil.

Pihak berkuasa Malaysia akan mengadakan sidang media esok untuk menjelaskan
butiran lanjut mengenai perkembangan terbaharu itu.

Lessons from MH370 for the world, not just Malaysia, minister says

KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 — As more criticisms rain on Malaysia over its handling of the MH370 crisis, Putrajaya pointed out today that the aircraft’s mysterious disappearance has baffled not just the local aviation industry but international experts.
Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein repeated that the case is “unprecedented”, and said experts from the world over could learn a thing or two from the experience.
“There are so many aspects to this incident that we need to look at. Not only just in Malaysia but the whole aviation industry globally.
“And from my exposure to the experts from around the world, like I said before, we are looking at an unprecedented situation where a lot of people can learn many things... whether about security, the issue of surveillance,” he told the daily press conference on the crisis, held this time at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC).
But the minister maintained that any improvements to the global aviation industry could only be done at a later date, or at the very least, once MH370 is found.
He said even the foreign experts working with the local team to locate the missing aircraft have been unable to divulge more information than they already have, without any conclusive evidence on the plane’s whereabouts.
“Unless we have more information... and that must come from the plane itself,” Hishammuddin said.
Hishammuddin noted that as of now, the entire search and rescue operation will stick to its current system which hinges on gathering as much information from satellites and radars as volunteered by countries assisting in the search.
The operation will also progressively increase air and surface assets and also increase the number of international experts to study the data and narrow down the search area in their bid to maximise the chances of finding the missing plane, he added.
The defence minister repeated that they are also not discounting the possibility that the plane could have been deliberately steered off course by someone on the plane, though there is little evidence to support the theory.
“As it is there has not been any ransom, or groups making claims... the best course of action for us is what we are doing now which is conducting parellel investigations into the matter,” he said referring to checks on the various leads found since the plane went missing on March 8.

Hishammuddin stressed that the status of the operation remains search and rescue in both corridors, and will continue to be so until the point where they find debris that is confirmed to be part of the missing plane.
“The focus remains in both corridors, but with the latest leads and information from France, Australia and China, a lot of focus is on the southern corridor.
“This all depends on the sightings of MH370... if it is confirmed (debris in the Indian Ocean is part of the plane), then we will bring down the whole operation to the southern corridor.
“But this needs corroboration, otherwise it is not fair to the families of the passengers and crew to shift the search from the northern corridor,” he said.

Malaysia says jet crashed in sea; bad weather halts search

SYDNEY/KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Bad weather and rough seas on Tuesday forced the suspension of the search for any wreckage of a missing Malaysian jetliner that officials are now sure crashed in the remote Indian Ocean with the loss of all 239 people on board.
Citing groundbreaking satellite-data analysis by British firm Inmarsat , Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said on Monday that Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, which vanished more than two weeks ago while flying to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur, had crashed thousands of miles away in the southern Indian Ocean.
Recovery of wreckage of the Boeing 777 could unlock clues about why the plane had diverted so far off course. Theories range from a hijacking to sabotage or a possible suicide by one of the pilots, but investigators have not ruled out technical problems.
An international air and sea search in the area on Monday spotted several floating objects that might be parts of the plane and an Australian navy ship was close to finding possible debris, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said.
But the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said gale-force winds, heavy rain and low cloud meant planes could not fly safely to the zone on Tuesday, and waves of 6 metres (20ft) or more forced the navy ship from the area.
"AMSA has consulted with the Bureau of Meteorology and weather conditions are expected to improve in the search area in the evening and over the next few days. Search operations are expected to resume tomorrow, if weather conditions permit," AMSA said in a statement.
The search site is far from commercial flight paths about 2,500 km (1,550 miles) southwest of Perth, a region of deep, frigid seas known as the Roaring 40s where storm-force winds and huge waves are commonplace.
"This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites," Malaysia's Najib said. "It is therefore, with deep sadness and regret, that I must inform you that, according to this new data, Flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean."

Some relatives of those on board first received the news that the search for survivors was over in a Malaysia Airlines SMS message which said: "We have to assume beyond all reasonable doubt that MH370 has been lost and none of those on board survived."
There were hysterical scenes at the Beijing hotel where many of the relatives of those on board were staying. Most of the passengers on the flight, from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, were Chinese.
A group reportedly representing families issued a statement describing the Malaysian airline, government and military as "executioners" who constantly tried to delay and deceive them.
"We will take every possible means to pursue the unforgivable crimes and responsibility of all three," said the statement on the microblog of the Malaysia Airlines MH370 Family Committee.
Malaysia Airlines said in a statement that it would make arrangements to fly relatives to Australia once it had approval from the investigating authorities.
Abbott said he expected the families to travel to Australia soon. "They will find a welcoming country that is more than willing to embrace them in this difficult time," he told reporters.
COSTLY DIFFICULT INVESTIGATION
Najib's announcement opens the way for what will be one of the most costly and difficult air crash investigations ever. Normally, an official investigation can only begin once a crash site has been identified.
That would give Malaysia power to coordinate and sift evidence. Malaysia has faced heavy criticism over the progress of the search and its informal investigation, especially from China which had more than 150 citizens on board the plane.
Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Xie Hangsheng immediately demanded Malaysia hand over all relevant satellite-data analysis showing how Malaysia had reached its conclusion about the fate of the jet.
Australia's Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said the Malaysian statement moved the search to a new phase.
"It moves it to a stage where we are now investigating an accident, a loss of an aircraft and some new decisions will have to be taken now about the direction of future operations," Truss told reporters.
"Malaysia needs to take control under the Chicago convention of those investigations."
The United States said it was sending an undersea Navy drone to Australia, in addition to a high-tech black box detector, to help in the search.
The so-called black boxes - the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder - record what happens during flight. Black boxes carry locator beacons but they fade out after 30 days.
Flight MH370 vanished from civilian radar screens less than an hour after taking off on March 8. No confirmed debris from the plane has been found since.
Investigators believe someone on the flight may have shut off the plane's communications systems. Partial military radar tracking showed it turning west and re-crossing the Malay Peninsula, apparently under the control of a skilled pilot.
Najib said Inmarsat had been performing further calculations on data gleaned from faint pings picked up by satellite that initially only narrowed the search area to two massive arcs.
The Inmarsat analysis had narrowed the search area "but it's still a big area that they have to search", said Stephen Wood, CEO of All Source Analysis, a satellite analytic firm.

Malaysian papers turn black in tribute to crashed jet

Malaysian newspapers ran striking black front pages Tuesday in tribute to the victims of Flight MH370, which crashed in the southern Indian Ocean with 239 people aboard.
Malaysia's biggest English-language daily, The Star, ran a stark wrap-around cover emblazoned with the words "MH370 R.I.P." The names of the victims, rendered in small print, made up the letters of the headline.
The New Straits Times' darkened front page showed an aircraft above the words "Goodnight, MH370" -- a reference to the last message from the cockpit, "All right, good night", before the Malaysia Airlines jet lost contact on March 8.
Malay- and Chinese-language papers also ran front pages with black backgrounds, while The Sun, an English-language daily, changed its masthead to black.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak announced Monday that latest analysis of satellite data showed that the flight, which went missing en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, had ended in the southern Indian Ocean.
Bad weather hampered the search for debris off the coast of Australia on Tuesday, and it remains a mystery why the plane diverted from its original route.
The Star said in an editorial that the relatives' "long wait for some form of closure has finally arrived".
But it called for unsparing efforts to establish the reasons for the crash.
On social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook, many Malaysians turned their profile backgrounds black or displayed a plane icon in tribute to the victims.
Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein used his Twitter page to call for all citizens of the multi-ethnic country to pray for the victims and their families.
"Our search for #MH370 continues," he said.
Veteran opposition politician Lim Kit Siang wrote on his Twitter page: "Saddest 4 families relatives friends of 239 on board MH370 - that they have perished in South Indian Ocean. Not just them but a crying world."

Parliament keeps minute’s silence to mourn MH370

KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 ― The Dewan Rakyat observed a minute of silence this morning to pay its respects to those aboard missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 that ended somewhere in the south Indian Ocean.
Just before the start of sitting and after the usual opening prayer, Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia addressed the House over Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s surprise confirmation of the plane’s fate last night.
“I, on behalf of the Dewan Rakyat members and the whole of Parliament, would like to record my condolences to the families of the passengers and crew of MH370,” Pandikar said today.
“I would like to take this opportunity to ask for them to stay strong and brave in this.”

* 14 Mac - Pencarian diperluas sehingga ke Lautan Hindi. Armada Ketujuh Tentera Laut Amerika Syarikat USS Kidd tiba di Selat Melaka untuk membantu pencarian.
   
* 14 Mac - Pihak berkuasa mengkaji empat hingga lima kemungkinan bagaimana transponder pesawat ditutup.
   
* 15 Mac - Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak tidak dapat mengesahkan laporan kemungkinan pesawat dirampas.
   
Najib berkata komunikasi terakhir pesawat dengan satelit dikesan di satu daripada dua koridor; koridor utara merentangi kawasan dari sempadan Kazakhstan dan Turkmenistan ke bahagian utara Thailand atau koridor selatan yang merentangi kawasan dari Indonesia ke bahagian selatan Lautan Hindi.

Najib berkata operasi mencari dan menyelamat di Laut China Selatan ditamatkan.

Hishammuddin berkata siasatan terhadap penumpang tunggal warga Ukraine yang dijalankan oleh pihak berkuasa negara itu juga mengesahkan latar belakang penumpang berkenaan bersih.
   
* 22 Mac - Transkrip komunikasi yang didakwa antara pesawat MH370 dan pusat kawalan trafik udara pada malam pesawat dilapor hilang diklasifikasi sebagai tidak tepat dan tidak sah, kata DCA.

Hishammuddin berkata satelit China mencerap imej objek terapung berukuran 22.5 meter x 13 meter.

MH370: INMARSAT jejak MH370 guna pendekatan unik

KUALA LUMPUR: Pendedahan bahawa pesawat Malaysian Airlines (MAS) MH370 berakhir di selatan Lautan Hindi di barat Perth, Australia adalah berdasarkan analisis baru oleh penyiasat-penyiasat di United Kingdom dan firma satelit Britain, INMARSAT.

Menurut laporan BBC, INMARSAT mengemukakan data baru itu kepada bahagian Penyiasatan Nahas Udara United Kingdom (AAIB) supaya ia boleh diperiksa sebelum disebarkan kepada orang awam.

INMARSAT berkata pengiraan terbarunya melibatkan sejumlah besar data analisis yang memberi tumpuan kepada beberapa faktor termasuk pergerakkan pesawat lain.

Firma itu menambah bahawa ini adalah teknik terbaru dan oleh kerana itu, analisis tersebut memakan masa.

Naib Presiden Kanan INMARSAT, Chris McLaughlin berkata firma itu mengkaji “ping” elektronik yang pesawat itu hantar kepada salah satu satelitnya.

"Kami telah berurusan dengan sesuatu yang baru. Kami telah cuba untuk membantu siasatan berdasarkan hanya satu isyarat yang diterima sekali setiap jam dari sebuah pesawat yang tidak ada sebarang data GPS, masa dan jarak maklumat.

"Mereka berjaya mencari jalan untuk mengatakan hanya satu “ping”  sahaja boleh digunakan untuk mengatakan pesawat itu membuat perjalanan. Kemudian, melalui proses penyingkiran dengan membandingkannya dengan pesawat-pesawat yang lain, diketahui ia terbang ke arah Selatan.

Sementara itu, dalam satu temubual di Sky News, MacLaughlin berkata pesawat yang terbang ke arah selatan itu kehabisan minyak.

Semalam, Perdana menteri Datuk Seri Najib Razak berkata pesawat MH370 yang gagal dikesan sejak 8 Mac lalu, disahkan hilang di kawasan selatan Lautan Hindi di barat Perth, Australia.

Najib berkata, kedudukan terakhir penerbangan MH370 itu didasarkan kepada maklumat daripada data satelit INMARSAT dan AAIB yang mengesahkan pesawat Boeing 777-200 itu terbang ke koridor selatan isyarat terakhir yang dikesan daripada pesawat itu.

"Ini kawasan yang terpencil, jauh daripada mana-mana tapak pendaratan yang munasabah.

"Oleh itu, dengan rasa penuh dukacita dan kesal, saya memaklumkan bahawa, berdasarkan kepada data baru ini, penerbangan MH370 berakhir di selatan Lautan Hindi," kata Najib.

Pesawat itu membawa 239 orang, termasuk 38 penumpang dan 12 anak kapal warga Malaysia.

Operasi mengesan pesawat ini digerakkan sejak ia hilang pada awal pagi 8 Mac lalu dan disertai oleh lebih 20 buah negara.

Siasatan awal mendapati pesawat yang hilang itu telah dilencongkan dengan sengaja oleh seseorang yang memandunya. Bagaimanapun, pelbagai spekulasi dan teori konspirasi timbul kerana sistem komunikasi dengan pesawat itu terputus dan tiada bukti-bukti kukuh atau petunjuk mengenai kehilangan pesawat itu.

Antara teori yang dikemukakan dalam masa pencarian sepanjang 17 hari lalu oleh pakar dan penganalisis penerbangan termasuk rampasan, sabotaj oleh juruterbang serta kemungkinan pesawat itu mengalami masalah sehingga menyebabkan semua anak kapalnya tidak sedarkan diri dan pesawat itu terbang sendiri sehingga kehabisan minyak.

Pesawat penerbangan MH370 membuat hubungan terakhir dengan pusat kawalan trafik udara semasa berada di Laut China Selatan di sebuah kawasan yang terletak antara sempadan Malaysia dan Vietnam.

Ia kemudian dikesan berpatah balik dari laluan asalnya dan terbang selama beberapa jam.

PM: Berkabung lepas MH370 ditemui

Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Najib Razak berkata usaha pencarian perlu diteruskan sehingga berhasil menemui bangkai pesawat MH370 sebelum melakukan upacaya perkabungan rasmi.

"Walaupun ada cadangan sedemikian, kerajaan berpendapat bahawa kita perlu menemui objek dan serpihan kapal terbang itu sebelum kita melakukan perkara tersebut," katanya.

Katanya, antara upacara perkabungan rasmi itu termasuk mengibarkan bendera separuh tiang bagi memperingati penumpang dan anak kapal.

Tambahnya lagi, Majlis Fatwa Kebangsaan akan bersidang petang ini untuk menentukan masa yang sesuai bagi melakukan solat jenazah ghaib.

"Jawatankuasa fatwa akan bersidang pada jam 6 petang ini untuk menentukan solat jenazah ghaib bilakah patut dilakukan," katanya.

Beliau berucap ketika membentangkan usul khas di Dewan Rakyat hari ini bagi merakam ucapan takziah dan doa atas kehilangan pesawat itu.

MH370: Australia kecualikan bayaran visa

MELBOURNE: Australia akan mengecualikan bayaran visa bagi anggota keluarga penumpang dan anak kapal pesawat Malaysia Airlines MH370 sekiranya mereka ingin datang ke negara itu.

Perdana Menteri Australia Tony Abbott memberitahu Parlimen Persekutuan bahawa bayaran itu akan dikecualikan bagi keluarga penumpang dan anak kapal pesawat yang penerbangannya berakhir di selatan Lautan Hindi di Western Australia.

Beliau sekali lagi merakamkan ucapan takziah kepada sanak saudara dan keluarga penumpang serta anak kapal terbabit dan berkata usul rasmi berkaitan ucapan takziah itu akan dikemukakan pada Rabu.

"Berkemungkinan besar dalam beberapa hari dan minggu yang mendatang, banyak saudara mara penumpang pesawat MH370 akan berhasrat untuk datang ke Australia," kata Abbott kepada parlimen pada Selasa.

Malam tadi Perdana Menteri Malaysia Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak mengumumkan bahawa penerbangan MH370, yang hilang semasa merentasi Laut China Selatan ketika dalam penerbangan dari Kuala Lumpur ke Beijing pada 8 Mac, "berakhir di selatan Lautan Hindi".

Pesawat Boeing 777-200ER, dengan 227 penumpang dan 12 anak kapal, berlepas dari Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa KL pada 12.41 tengah malam. Ia dijadual tiba di Beijing pada 6.30 pagi (waktu Malaysia) pada hari sama.

MH370: Letak jawatan hanya akan dibuat selepas krisis ini selesai - Ahmad Jauhari

KUALA LUMPUR: Ketua Eksekutif Penerbangan Malaysia (MAS), Ahmad Jauhari Yahya berkata segala keputusan sama ada beliau akan meletak jawatan dari MAS hanya akan dilakukan selepas krisis kehilangan pesawat MH370 ini selesai.  

"Adakah saya akan melepaskan jawatan saya ini, itu adalah keputusan peribadi yang hanya akan dilakukan selepas ini apabila segalanya selesai," kata beliau ketika ditanya pemberita pada sidang media di Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa Kuala Lumpur (KLIA).

Beliau bersama-sama dengan Pengerusi MAS, Tan Sri Md Nor Yusof menerangkan bahawa perkara utama yang sangat penting untuk dilakukan pada saat ini ialah mencari pesawat tersebut yang disahkan hilang di kawasan selatan Lautan Hindi.

Semalam, Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak dalam satu sidang media tergemparnya di Pusat Dagangan Dunia Putra (PWTC) mengesahkan bahawa perjalanan pesawat MH370 itu telah berakhir di selatan Lautan Hindi.

Pengesahan itu dilakukan selepas menerima maklumat kedudukan terakhir pesawat itu yang didasarkan kepada maklumat daripada data satelit yang diberikan oleh syarikat Britain, INMARSAT dan Bahagian Penyiasatan Nahas Udara United Kingdom (AAIB) dan mendapati pesawat Boeing 777-200 itu telah terbang ke jalur selatan isyarat terakhir yang dikesan daripada pesawat itu.

Sementara itu, Ahmad Jauhari juga menegaskan bahawa meskipun terdapat banyak permintaan dari keluarga dan waris penumpang pesawat tersebut dari negara China untuk terbang ke Australia bagi mengikuti perkembangan pencarian pesawat tersebut, kebenaran visa untuk ke negara tersebut hanya akan diberi oleh pihak Australia apabila bukti-bukti sahih mengenai penemuan pesawat tersebut di sekitar perairan negara itu benar-benar dijumpai.

"Kami telah diberitahu oleh pihak berkuasa Australia bahawa visa hanya akan diberi atau dikeluarkan apabila bukti-bukti sahih terhadap pesawat tersebut telah berjaya di temui," katanya.

Pihak MAS kini telah menyerahkan sepenuhnya siasatan kehilangan kepada pihak berwajib.

Dalam pada itu, pihak MAS telah menyediakan program komprehensif sokongan kepada keluarga dan waris penumpang MH370 dimana seramai 700 kaunselor telah disediakan.

"Setiap keluarga akan disediakan dengan dua kaunselor ini dimana mereka ini akan memberi bantuan sokongan, kauseling emosi, dan kebajikan kepada mereka dan dalam masa 72 jam seramai 40 kaunselor lagi telah ditambah demi memberi membantu keluarga-keluarga yang ditimpa kesusahan ini," katanya.

Anggota keluarga di Hotel Everly adakan bacaan Yasin

PUTRAJAYA: Anggota keluarga penumpang pesawat Malaysia Airlines MH370, yang ditempatkan di Hotel Everly di sini, mengadakan majlis bacaan Yasin hari ini bagi memohon misi pencarian pesawat berkenaan dipermudahkan.

Antara yang hadir ialah anggota keluarga kepada penumpang, Mohd Razahan Zamani dan isteri Norli Akmar Hamid, Khairul Amri Selamat dan Suhaili Mustafa.

Menurut Naib Yang Dipertua Persatuan Kebajikan Anak Pahang di Ibukota Datuk Mustaffa Mat Yasin yang turut serta dalam majlis, majlis itu juga diadakan untuk mendoakan agar pesawat serta penumpang dapat dijumpai segera.

"Dulu ayahnya selalu bawa anaknya ke pejabat saya dan sejak kecil lagi anaknya telah menunjukkan minat untuk menjadi jurutera," katanya yang mengenali Khairul iaitu anak kepada Selamat Omar sejak kecil, kepada pemberita di sini hari ini.

Penerbangan MH370 membawa 227 penumpang dan 12 anak kapal dalam perjalanan dari Kuala Lumpur ke Beijing itu, hilang daripada skrin radar kira-kira sejam setelah berlepas dari Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa KL (KLIA) pada 12.41 tengah malam 8 Mac. Pesawat itu sepatutnya mendarat di Beijing pada 6.30 pagi hari yang sama.

Warga MAS Bersedih Kehilangan Pesawat MH370



KETUA Pegawai Eksekutif (CEO) Syarikat Penerbangan Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Ahmad Jauhari Yahya berkata tiada perkataan dapat menggambarkan kesedihan yang ditanggung oleh ahli keluarga penumpang pesawat MH370.

Dalam satu kenyataan rasmi hari ini, beliau berkata hari ini beliau bersama dengan ahli keluarga penumpang bukan sebagai CEO tetapi sebagai ahli keluarga kepada penumpang pesawat berkenaan.

“Saya hari ini berdiri sebagai ayah, abang dan anak kepada semua keluarga penumpang pesawat MH370.

“Setiap kakitangan di MAS sedang berdoa untuk kesemua 239 nyawa dalam pesawat MH370 dan juga kepada ahli keluarga mereka pada hari yang kelam ini, kami akan terus berdoa dan mengucapkan takziah,” katanya.

Beliau berkata MAS turut bersedih apabila mengenangkan ahli keluarga tidak akan berjumpa dengan orang yang mereka sayang di dalam pesawat berkenaan.

“Mereka kini akan hidup tanpa orang tersayang, perlu diingatkan 13 daripada mereka di dalam pesawat itu merupakan rakan kami di MAS,” katanya.

Ahmad Jauhari berkata malam tadi MAS berusaha untuk memaklumkan ahli keluarga penumpang terlebih dahulu berkenaan perkembangan terbaru pesawat MH370 sebelum ia diketahui di seluruh dunia melalui media.

“Dengan apa yang termampu, kami cuba bertemu ahli keluarga atau menelefon mereka, kami akan menggunakan khidmat pesanan ringkas (SMS) hanya apabila perlu hanya untuk memastikan hampir 1,000 ahli keluarga menerima berita daripada kami dan bukan daripada pihak media,” katanya.

Katanya, sejak kehilangan pesawat MH370 diketahui, fokus pihak MAS terus konsisten untuk memberi sokongan moral kepada para ahli keluarga selain sokongan yang diterima dari pelbagai negara untuk membantu mengesan pesawat MH370.

Untuk sokongan kepada keluarga pihak MAS sudah pun memberikan bantuan awal $5,000 Dolar Amerika (RM16,000) kepada waris setiap penumpang MH370 bagi meringankan beban mereka.

“Misi mencari dan menyelamat yang berpanjangan akan menyebabkan beban kewangan kepada ahli keluarga, kami bersedia untuk menawrkan bantuan kewangan tambahan selagi misi mencari berterusan,” katanya. – MYNEWSHUB.MY

The search for the wreckage of MH370 in the Indian Ocean has been described as the "worst nightmare" for any rescue operation.

University Teknologi Malaysia professor for hydrography and ocean mapping Dr Mohd Razali Mahmud said the region was isolated with high waves, swift under currents and strong winds.

"Some of the waves can be as high as 5m, and this will be a huge challenge for any salvage operation," Dr Mohd, who is from the Faculty of Geo-Information and Real Estate said on Tuesday.

He added even commercial vessels avoided using this route due to the challenges and dangers.

Dr Mohd said the most important thing to do now was to narrow the search area to locate the wreckage or the black box.

He added that it was important for search vessels to be equipped with a multi-beam sonar system to scan the ocean bed to locate the wreckage.

"I just hope that the wreckage is lying on a flat area as a search operation becomes complicated if it (wreckage) is lodged in a ravine or a mountainous area," he said, adding that the topography of an ocean was similar to how it was on land with ravines and mountains.

Dr Mohd said that remote operating vehicles (ROV) or Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) could be deployed to carry out salvage works once the wreckage was discovered as these depths of 4,000m to 7,000m were too deep for any diver.

He added that the government could get the assistance of companies involved in the oil and gas sector or off-shore survey companies, which have such equipment, to lay cables or even for drilling activities in the ocean.

Asked if Malaysia had capabilities to carry out a search in the area, Dr Mohd, who has been studying oceans for 20 years, said that the Malaysian Navy's multi-beam sonar was only able to search in areas of about 1,000m.

He said it was of important to locate the black box as once the batteries die out after 30 days, it would be next to impossible to locate it.

"We have limited time of about 12 days and effort should be made to go all out to locate the black box using all available resources," he added.

Asked about the chances of survival for anyone, if the plane had crash-landed on water during an emergency landing, he said the area was very remote and it would be impossible to survive under such hard conditions in a life raft for 18 days.

On the debris, Dr Mohd added that the swift currents could easily wash them off several hundred kilometres away.

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu School of Marine Science and Environment dean Prof Dr Zulfigar Yasin said the Indian Ocean has some of the roughest sea conditions in the world.

"The last position of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth.

"The area is not within the normal shipping lane, and most oceanic traffic occur further up north," he said.

Dr Zulfigar said the weather, atmospheric conditions and surface conditions of the ocean would affect search and rescue efforts, which would be "more than finding a needle in a haystack".

MH370: Kenapa kesimpulan selepas 12 hari?
Pemasaan perdana menteri mengumumkan lokasi terakhir MH370 di Lautan Hindi malam tadi menjadi persoalan dalam sidang media oleh pihak berkuasa Malaysia hari ini.

Wartawan China mempersoalkan kenapa Malaysia membuat kesimpulan itu hanya dibuat malam tadi walaupun data satelit dikatakan diperoleh sejak 12 Mac.

Pasukan siasatan berkata, mereka tiada niat menangguhkan dan masa itu diperlukan untuk membuat analisis dan mengukuhkan bukti.

Pemangku Menteri Pengangkutan Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein berkata, data satelit sahaja tidak konklusif seperti ditunjukan ketika kajian ditumpukan di Laut China Selatan.

“Kami terima data satelit dari China yang menunjukkan (serpihan) di Laut China Selatan (dan) mengarahkan semula pencarian kami di kawasan yang sudah dibuat, dan ia negatif,” katanya.

Ketua Pengarah Jabatan Penerbangan Awam (DCA) Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman menambah, data satelit yang diterima pada 13 Mac perlu dianalisis, ia satu-satunya siri "handshake" – isyarat antara pesawat dan satelit.

Plane was on suicide mission, say sources

JUST hours after Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak explained what happened to Flight MH370 - it fell into the Indian Ocean - a British newspaper quoted official sources to suggest why it happened.

The Malaysia Airlines plane was on a suicide mission, reported The Telegraph.

No fire or malfunction could possibly have caused the silent seven-hour flight into the sea of the plane, which was guided away from its planned route, the newspaper reported.

After its communications systems appeared to have been deliberately switched off, the plane's routing and signalling suggested it was flown "in a rational way".

"This has been a deliberate act by someone on board who had to have the detailed knowledge to do what was done... Nothing is emerging that points to motive," The Telegraph was told.

Investigators have apparently simulated how the plane could have got where it was last detected in a remote area of the Indian Ocean, and signs point to it being flown in a deliberate manner.

Asked about the possibility of a plane malfunction or an on-board fire, the source said: "It just does not hinge together... (The investigators) have gone through processes you do to get the plane where it flew to for eight hours. They point to it being flown in a rational way."

They believe someone on the flight shut off the plane's communications systems as it passed from Malaysia to Vietnam air space.

Experts have said that this was the "perfect moment" for a plane to be absent for communications without arousing suspicion.

Partial military radar tracking showed it turning west and re-crossing the Malay Peninsula, apparently under the control of a skilled pilot.

Mr Najib said on Sunday that groundbreaking satellite-data analysis by the British company Inmarsat had revealed that Flight MH370 had crashed in the southern Indian Ocean.

While no confirmed debris from the plane has been found, Inmarsat had used a principle called the Doppler effect to analyse the difference between the frequency that the ground station expects to receive and one that is actually measured.

The British company checked its predictions with six other B777 aircraft flying on the same day in various directions, Acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said at a press conference last evening.

He also revealed that what had been reported to be the satellite transmitter's final ping at 8.11am on March 8 was followed by "a partial handshake" between the plane and a ground station at 8.19am.

The next ping, which was supposed to happen at 9.15am, was not detected.

Between those two times, the aircraft was no longer able to communicate with the ground station.

"This is consistent with the maximum endurance of the aircraft," said Mr Hishammuddin.

After Mr Najib's announcement, Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Xie Hangsheng demanded that Malaysia hand over all relevant satellite analysis showing how Malaysia had reached its conclusion about the fate of the jet.

As a result of the new analysis, the search in the north corridor has been called off.

I feel a connection with hopeful people

ON MARCH 7, Mr Liu Qiang, 40, took a bus from Singapore, where he had worked for the last four years, to Kuala Lumpur to take a flight to Beijing, then a train to his hometown in Shangdong province.

This year, he did not return home for Chinese New Year. He stayed back in Singapore to earn extra in overtime pay. He was flying from Kuala Lumpur because it is cheaper than flying from Singapore.

His wife, Madam Nan Kaifen, 40, waited for him at a Jining train station. "I waited all night, and, now, I'm still waiting," Madam Nan said on day 12 of her ordeal. On the first day, there was a ring tone when she dialled his mobile number repeatedly.

Mr Liu's father said: "He must come back to stay in this new house that he built."

He was referring to the newly renovated house paid for with his wages earned in Singapore.

Asked on day 13 if she thought her husband was alive, Madam Nan replied: "I have hope."

While I am writing this article, relatives of passengers on the missing plane, MH370, were told of its fate after 17 days.

The media said, at last, there was "closure for those living on hope", although many questions remained. In the past weeks, seeing images of loved ones waiting in hotels, I pondered over this thing called hope.

We all know of a time when hope is the only thing we can hold on to. Some people refuse to hope because it means risking huge disappointment and, hence, immense pain.

Some people stay hopeful despite themselves, going with the flow of their emotions. And then there are some people who consciously choose to believe, to wish and to hope.

What do we think of these people? Have they lost touch with reality? Or are they the personification of what hope really is? A mindful determination, a resolve and courage to ask for something against the odds. Having faith.

A clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery wrote in Time magazine how his cancer patient, with barely any unaffected brain left, woke up to say goodbye to his wife and three kids for five minutes. What woke this patient was simply his mind, forcing its way through a broken brain, a father's final act to comfort his family.

The mind is a uniquely personal domain of thoughts, dreams and countless other things, like will, faith and hope. These fine things are as real as rocks and water but weightless and invisible.

Material science shies from these things. An article in The New York Times told of a patient with metastatic cancer who was in constant and extreme pain. Her daughter's wedding was arranged in the intensive care unit so that she could be a part of it.

For the entire day of the wedding, nurses and doctors were amazed that she did not need any pain medication. After the wedding, her life was prolonged.

I am not sure if hopeful people are born or made. But I love them. I seek them out. To be with them.

Because they are behind the magnificence of the world we live in. Because being hopeful is being brave. To have hope is to be strong. It is more than being positive, or being optimistic.

Most times, it is something bigger than oneself, extending beyond personal wants and needs, involving the interests and well-being of loved ones, or a bigger cause.

Every time I see someone hoping when others have given up hope, hoping in the face of hopelessness, I feel a connection.

I understand. Not fully. But I know how it must feel. It can be lonely. With a tint of despair.

What if missing Malaysia Airlines plane is never found?

WELLINGTON — The plane must be somewhere. But the same can be said for Amelia Earhart’s.

Ten days after Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared with 239 people aboard, an exhaustive international search has produced no sign of the Boeing 777, raising an unsettling question: What if the airplane is never found?

Such an outcome, while considered unlikely by many experts, would certainly torment the families of those missing. It would also flummox the airline industry, which will struggle to learn lessons from the incident if it does not know what happened.

While rare nowadays, history is not short of such mysteries — from the most famous of all, American aviator Earhart, to planes and ships disappearing in the so-called Bermuda Triangle.

“When something like this happens that confounds us, we’re offended by it, and we’re scared by it,’’ said Mr Ric Gillespie, a former United States aviation accident investigator who wrote a book about Earhart’s still-unsolved 1937 disappearance over the Pacific Ocean. “We had the illusion of control and it’s just been shown to us that oh, folks, you know what? A really big airliner can just vanish. And nobody wants to hear that.”

Part of the problem, said Mr Andrew Thomas, the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Transportation Security, is that airline systems are not as sophisticated as many people might think. A case in point, he said, is that airports and airplanes around the world use antiquated radar tracking technology, first developed in the 1950s, rather than modern GPS systems.

A GPS system might not have solved the mystery of Flight 370, which disappeared March 8 while flying from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing. But it would probably have given searchers a better read on the plane’s last known location, Mr Thomas said.

“There are lots of reasons why they haven’t changed, but the major one is cost,” he said. “The next-generation technology would cost $70 to $80 billion in the US.”

Experts say the plane’s disappearance will likely put pressure on airlines and governments to improve the way they monitor planes, including handoff procedures between countries. Flight 370 vanished after it signed off with Malaysian air-traffic controllers, and never made contact with their Vietnamese counterparts as it should have.

And if the plane is never found, liability issues will be a huge headache for courts. With no wreckage, it would be difficult to determine whether the airline, manufacturers or other parties should bear the brunt of responsibility.

“The international aviation legal system does not anticipate the complete disappearance of an aircraft,” said Mr Brian Havel, a law professor and director of the International Aviation Law Institute at DePaul University in Chicago. “We just don’t have the tools for that at present.”

The families of the missing, of course, would face the most painful consequences of a failed search.

“In any kind of death, the most important matter for relatives and loved ones is knowing the context and circumstances,” said Mr Kevin Tso, the chief executive of New Zealand agency Victim Support, which has been counselling family and friends of the two New Zealand passengers aboard the flight. “When there’s very little information, it’s very difficult.”

Mr Tso said the abundance of speculation about the plane’s fate in the media and elsewhere is not helpful to the families, who may be getting false hope that their loved ones are still alive.

Cases of large passenger planes vanishing without a trace have been rare in recent decades. Among a couple of notable instances, a Pakistan International Airlines plane carrying 54 people from Gilgit to Islamabad disappeared in 1989 and the wreckage was never found. And in 1965, an Argentine military plane carrying 69 people disappeared, according to the Flight Safety Foundation.

Earhart, the first female pilot to cross the Atlantic Ocean, vanished over the Pacific with Fred Noonan during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe. Seven decades later, people are still transfixed. Theories range from her simply running out of fuel and crashing to her staging her own disappearance and secretly returning to the US to live under another identity.

There is also an ongoing fascination with the Bermuda Triangle, where several ships and planes disappeared, including a squadron of five torpedo bombers in 1945. Studies have indicated the area is no more dangerous than any other stretch of ocean.

More than two dozen countries are involved in the effort to find Flight 370 and end the uncertainty, with dozens of aircraft and boats searching along a vast arc where investigators believe the plane ended up, judging by signals received by a satellite.

Mr Gillespie and other experts said they expect the plane will eventually be found, even if investigators have to wait until some wreckage washes ashore.

“We all expect we’re going to find this plane and the chances are probably pretty good that we’ll find something.
