Mohammed Assaf wins Arab Idol
Jubilation among Palestinians as singer who grew up in refugee camp wins over voters across Arab world
Palestinian cities erupted in joy after the Gazan singer Mohammed Assaf won the Arab Idol singing contest final held in Beirut on Saturday night, providing a welcome break from conflict with Israel.
The fresh-faced 22-year-old from humble roots in a refugee camp endeared himself to millions of voting television viewers with his Palestinian patriotic anthems and folk songs.
After watching Assaf's victory from giant screens in the Gaza Strip and Israeli-occupied West Bank, tens of thousands of Palestinians set off fireworks, danced in the streets and blasted his music from cars idling in frantic traffic jams.
"This shows that Palestinians don't just fight and struggle, but we rejoice and make great art," said a beaming Awad Najib, a government employee, after a mass viewing outside the Ramallah presidential palace in the West Bank.
Some Muslim clerics in Friday sermons had dismissed the pageant, saying its title encouraged idolatry and that people's energies would be better spent confronting Israel's occupation.
Political activists too complained that the glitzy spectacle had little to do with the Palestinian plight. But most Palestinians would have none of this and Saturday's revelry was like the end-of-Ramadan holiday combined with the World Cup final.
The scale of the celebrations easily outstripped most political or protest rallies of recent years and far exceeded those held after Palestinians gained non-member statehood in a vote at the UN general assembly in November 2012.
Many political leaders, who have increasingly alienated Palestinians with their bickering, have sought to try to hitch a ride from Assaf's galloping popularity. Some greying officials changed their Facebook profile pictures to his smiling face and spiked hair, urged people to text him their votes and praised his nationalist credentials.
"This win is a source of pride and a victory for our people on the road to achieving its dream of establishing an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital," President Mahmoud Abbas said. Abbas was jolted this week by his prime minister's surprise offer to resign and faces pressure from the US secretary of state, John Kerry, to jumpstart stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
But for locals, Assaf was all and politics took a backseat. "In the middle of the political failures Assaf achieved something that made Palestinians everywhere feel hope was still possible," said Imad Ahmed, a teacher from Gaza watching the show with his family at a beachfront restaurant.
After the victory Assaf was named by the UN as its first youth ambassador to Palestinian refugee camps in the territories and neighbouring countries. He is expected to visit the West Bank to perform

kat malaysia..idol tu jadi berhala...terus malaysian idol antara tv show paling best time ujibakat yg ada kat tv malaysia dicancel kan.. padahal..bg arab..idol itu adalah mangsa zionis.. kah kah kah(lama tk gelak sinis mcm ni)...
oleh itu..wahai melayu bangsa ku..berentilah berjubah bertudung mcm arab(lawa la konon).. berhentilah ana anta ana anta sesama mat kopiah sesama ijazah al azhar... mulalah kembali kepada melayu...sesungguhnya melayu tu la yg bagi korang tempat kat tanah malaya ni..bukan arab..arab tk penah tolong melayu masa kena jajah ngn inggeris dan jepun..

Colonel Maurice Lam Shye Choon
One of the recipients of PGB Medal on 5-6-1963, was Colonel Maurice Lam Shye Choon, from Penang.
The Panglima Gagah Berani (sometimes referred to as the Pingat Gagah Berani or Pahlawan Gagah Berani) is a medal given by the government of Malaysia. The name translates to "General of Bravery and Valor". It can be conferred posthumously. The award was created on the 29th of July 1960. It was formally gazatted by an act of parliament on the 11th of August 1960. The medal takes the form of a five pointed silver star. Two kris lie under the Malaysian royal Crown on the star. The star is held by a ribbon with 45° stripes which slant right. The stripes alternative in red, white, blue and yellow. Living recipients receive an allowance of RM 300 a month. The next of kin of posthumous recipients receive RM 15,000. A person may receive this award more than once.
Captain Maurice Lam Shye Choon
Captain Maurice was from Jalan Kelawai in Penang, derived his early education at the Wellesley Primary School, Hutchings School and Penang Free School and ended his Secondary Education at Stephen’s College in Hong Kong. After which he was sent by his father, Lam Kin Sang, a lawyer in Penang, to further his studies to become a Dentist at the University of Melbourne in Australia. He stayed there for two years after which he quit university. He very much wanted a career in the Military. Whilst in Melbourne for the two years, he joined the “Citizen Military Forces”. He wrote to General Sir Gerald Templar, learning, that the General was looking for youngsters to become Officers to join the Malayan Armed Forces. He was overjoyed when he received the letter from the General himself.
The call of the nation made him sacrifice the University in Melbourne and a career as a Dentist. He returned to Kuala Lumpur to attend the selection tests and interview in Port Dickson. He was one of the few Chinese out of 24 selected to join Intake 3 of the Federation Military College (FMC) in Port Dickson. After a month he was sent to the Federation Armored Car Regiment, then to Royal Military Academy Sandhurst from March 55 to July 56 in England until he was commissioned.

..nancy ajram tu punganut Lebanese Greek Orthodox yang lebih condong kepada Slavic Orthodox (Bulgaria, Serbia, Russia, Ukraine dll)...Koptik tu di Mesir saja....anyway kristian tak bleh jihad kaa..??
