KLM Annual Charity Tulip Sale returns this Mother’s Day

If you are looking for that perfectly unique gift for your mother this coming Mother’s Day, brighten up her special day with a bouquet of fresh tulips freshly flown in from the fields of the Netherlands by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

This seasonal flower is usually planted in October and November so that it grows in time to thrive in the cold winter and only flowers for a short time from mid April to end May, making them a sought after and unique bloom.

The Netherlands are famous for their cultivated tulips and is one of the most dominating countries in export of tulips and tulip bulbs, while annually busloads of tourists visit the Netherlands to see the tulip fields in bloom.
However you don’t have to travel so far to enjoy the beauty of the tulip. Handpick your own colourful bouquet of beautiful tulips at the 14th KLM Annual Charity Tulip Sale which will take place on Saturday, 12 May 2012 at the Concourse Level of Sungei Wang Plaza from 11.00 a.m. onwards.

Priced at RM5 each, there will be 3,500 stalks for sale including the double tulip and the fundraiser targets to raise RM28,000 for charity this year.

This year’s beneficiary is the Special Children Society of Ampang (SCSOA). What began as a mother’s search for a good place to send her daughter with Down’s Syndrome has now turned into an school-like establishment that meets the educational and social need of special children.
SCSOA now has almost 80 special children under its roof, ranging from 2 – 36 years of age. It provides individualised education programmes and group sessions to enable interpersonal skills, communication skills, behavior programmes, early intervention sessions for children of three to six years old, pre-vocational and life skills training, leisure and recreation.

In addition to providing quality and meaningful education to help fulfill each child's potential to become an independent, useful and valued member of society, SCSOA also provides a support system to families and carers.

“Fourteen years on and going strong, the KLM Annual Charity Tulip Sale is a success thanks to generous support from the public and our event partners alike. Their generosity has helped thousands in need over the years and this year, the special children from the Special Children Society of Ampang will benefit from the funds raised,” said Ms. Estee Ng, Air France-KLM’s Country Manager for Malaysia.

“The tulip is one of the Netherlands’ most famous icons, and through our Annual Charity Tulip Sale we wish to share the flower’s beauty and uniqueness with Malaysians and we believe that it is only apt for us to do this in conjunction with the Mother’s Day celebrations,” she added.

The 2012 KLM Annual Charity Tulip Sale is set to repeat the success of the past 14 years with the support of partners Rabobank; Sungei Wang Plaza as the official venue sponsor for the 14th year; and popular online Malaysian community cari.com.my as the official online media.

Pledging its support for the fourth year is Rabobank – a global financial services leader specialising in food and agribusiness banking – who has committed to contribute RM1 for every tulip sold, so that consumers only have to pay RM5 instead of RM6 each thus making it more affordable to the public. In addition to making the tulips more affordable, the Dutch bank will also top up another RM2 for every tulip sold, bringing their contribution this year to RM10,500.

Mr. Kao Chee Ming, Country Business Director for Rabobank in Malaysia said,  “Rabobank is pleased to once again be a partner of the KLM Annual Charity Tulip Sale. This is a multi-faceted CSR effort for us where not only the company contributes to the fundraising event but also our employees are invited to donate for a good cause.”

SMILES BLOOM FROM KLM CHARITY TULIP SALE

A heartfelt gift of fresh tulips from the 14th KLM Charity Tulip Sale brought smiles to many mothers in Malaysia as well as to the happy students of the Special Children Society of Ampang (SCSOA).

Held at Sungei Wang Plaza, which has hosted the annual event since it began over a decade ago, the charity sale saw members of the public queuing up at the shopping mall’s concourse early in the morning to ensure that they would have the best pick of the colourful, fresh tulip blooms.

Managed by the airline’s staff, the charity event will raise an estimated RM28,000 for charity through the sale of 3,500 stalks of tulips, which were flown in directly from the Netherlands the day before by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

“Fourteen years on and going strong, the KLM Annual Charity Tulip Sale is a success thanks to generous support from the public and our event partners alike. Their generosity has helped thousands in need over the years and we look forward to doing many, many more,” said Ms. Estee Ng, Air France-KLM’s Country Manager for Malaysia.

“The tulip is one of the Netherlands’ most famous icons and through our Annual Charity Tulip Sale we are happy to be able to share the flower’s beauty and uniqueness to bring some joy to Malaysians, especially in conjunction with Mother’s Day,” added Ng.

This seasonal flower is usually planted in October and November so that it grows in time to thrive in the cold winter and only flowers for a short time from mid April to end May, making them a sought after and unique bloom.

The Netherlands is famous for their cultivated tulips and is one of the most dominating countries in export of tulips and tulip bulbs, while annually busloads of tourists visit the Netherlands to see the tulip fields in bloom.

Mr. Kao Chee Ming, Country Business Director for Rabobank in Malaysia said, “We firmly believe we can touch thousands of lives through the annual KLM Charity Tulip Sale. We do not only spread joy for the recipient and giver of the tulips, but also to the special children from the SCSOA and their families.”

The success of the 2012 KLM Annual Charity Tulip Sale was also achieved with the support of Sungei Wang Plaza as the official venue sponsor for the 14th year and popular online Malaysian community Cari.com as the official online media for 2012.
