Naomi Watts to Play Princess Diana

Actress Naomi Watts is to play the role of Princess Diana in Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Caught In Flight.
Producedby Ecosse Films, the film is based on the screenplay by StephenJeffreys and follows Princess Diana during the last two years of herlife, during which time she found true personal happiness and achievedsuccess as an international campaigner and humanitarian
Production will begin in the UK later this year.
Watts, who will next be seen starring in The Impossibleopposite Ewan McGregor, described it as an “honour to be able to playthis iconic role - Princess Diana was loved across the world, and Ilook forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.’
DirectorHirschbiegel said he was “delighted to have such a truly exceptionalactress who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a globalicon as Princess Diana.’
Douglas Rae and Robert Bernstein’s Ecosse Films is also producing another royal themed film Girls Night Out starring Juno Temple and Alexandra Roach as the young Queen and Princess Margaret. |

Naomi Watts Replaces Jessica Chastain As Princess Diana In Oliver Hirschbiegel's Biopic 'Caught In Flight'
It's almost impressive at this point that we've gotten this far down the line (nearly fifteen years after her death) without some kind of film focusing on the life of Princess Diana, the ill-fated tabloid sweetheart who married Prince Charles, the heir to the English throne, only for the marriage to swiftly disintegrate.
Charles and Diana divorced in August 1996, and trhen Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris ta year later (the events of which are depicted in Stephen Frears' "The Queen," in which Diana only appears via archive footage.
But the last couple of years have started to see movement on various projects, with names like Charlize Theron, Keira Knightley, Scarlett Johansson and, more recently, Carey Mulligan, banded about as possibilites to play the late Queen of Hearts.
But the most concrete news came last year, when it was announced that Oliver Hirschbiegel, the German helmer of "Downfall," would direct "Caught In Flight," which would focus on Diana's relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan. |

Naomi Watts Wants Royal Approval For Her Diana Role
Actress Naomi Watts will seek the Royal seal of approval over her portrayal of Princess Diana.
Naomi is set to play the princess who was tragically killed in road accident in 1997. And the actress is said to be more than aware of the significance of her role on Diana’s sons William and Harry.
“Ideally, Naomi would love to have the imput of the Princes in telling their mother’s story but she understands that probably won’t happen,” reveals a movie insider.
“She is concerned about how she and the film is perceived, especially in the UK, and she’s hoping she will at least get the blessing of William and Harry.”
Naomi recently admitted her nerves almost got the better of her at the start of her career.
“It is a hard slog,” says Naomi. “I think I had to learn how to be myself and relax before people noticed me.
“People in America like confidence and I wasn’t like that. It made it so much harder.” |
