SEOUL, Dec 29 (Reuters) - At least 28 people were killed when an airliner went off the runway and slammed into a wall at South Korea's Muan International Airport on Sunday, Yonhap news agency reported.
The accident occurred as the Jeju Air plane, carrying 175 passengers and six crew on a flight from the Thai capital Bangkok, was landing at the airport in the south of the country, the report said.
Two people were found alive and rescue operations were still under way, a Muan fire official said. The official could not confirm the reports of 28 dead.
Authorities were working to rescue people in the tail section, an airport official told Reuters.
Video shared by local media showed the twin-engine aircraft skidding down the runway with no apparent landing gear before slamming into a wall in an explosion of flame and debris. Other photos showed smoke and fire engulfing parts of the plane.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok, who was named interim leader of the country on Friday after the previous acting president was impeached amid an ongoing political crisis, ordered all-out rescue efforts, his office said.
A Jeju Air spokesperson said the airline was checking the reports.

Jeju Air flight 2216 from Bangkok to Muan was carrying 181 people – 175 passengers and six crew – when it came down, skidded along the runway and hit fencing and a wall around the perimeter before catching fire.
Rescues are underway, with two people brought out of the wreckage so far. Emergency services are continuing their search operation.
The Boeing 737-800 may have suffered a bird strike that caused the landing gear to fail, according news agency Yonhap. The flight had reportedly attempted one landing before being forced to “go-around” when the landing gear failed to lower normally.
South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, has ordered “all available equipment and personnel to be mobilised” for the rescue operations at Muan international airport in the country’s south-west and is heading to the crash site, about 300km from the capital, Seoul.

"Even with one engine running, you can get flaps out. You can fly around in a hold for long enough to do some trouble shooting. Even with no engines running, you can get some flaps out. You can definitely get the gear down.
The fact that it seems like none of that happened raises a bunch of questions about what happened to them (something pretty catastrophic), or their decision making. Of course, I don't have any more info than anyone else (except that I fly this aircraft type, and given the current suggestions/videos around bird strikes etc. it shouldn't have resulted in this outcome), they might have completely lost all power and tried the impossible turn because that was the only option" |
