FIA announces latest F1 rule tweaks

The FIA has revealed a sequence of modifications to the sporting regulations on Tuesday, following a World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) meeting in Paris. The changes will enable Pirelli to run a development programme throughout the year, allow teams to use an extra set of Prime tyres during Friday practice and will also see reduced speeds during Safety Car periods.

According to the FIA, there will now be a predicted ‘40 percent decrease in lap time’ when the Safety Car is deployed, with a limit on speed enforced over two laps rather than one. It has also been clarified that drivers will not be permitted to use the pit lane if the Safety Car is on-track, unless a tyre change is required.

The full list of FIA changes:

- At certain events, one additional specification of dry weather tyre may be made available to all teams for evaluation purposes. Teams will be informed about such an additional specification at least one week before the start of the relevant event. Two sets of these tyres will be allocated to each driver for use during P1 and P2, and any such tyres must be returned to the tyre supplier before the start of P3

- One additional set of ‘Prime’ (harder compound) specification tyres may be made available to all drivers. Teams will be informed about such an additional set at least one week before the start of the relevant event. In this instance, the additional set will be available for use during P1 and P2. One set of ‘Prime’ tyres must then be returned to the tyre supplier after P1, and two further sets of ‘Prime’ and one set of ‘Option’ specification tyres returned before the start of P3

- The Safety Car speed limit (an approximate 40 percent decrease in lap time) will now be enforced over two laps instead of one. The purpose is to ensure that cars are driven at a safe speed until they reach the Safety Car

- During a Safety Car period the pit exit light will remain green for the duration, unless the race is subsequently suspended

- Other than when the Safety Car has been asked to use the pit lane, no car may enter the pits while the Safety Car is deployed unless it is for the purpose of changing tyres

Official: Vettel at Red Bull until end of 2014

Red Bull Racing has confirmed that World Champion Sebastian Vettel will be remaining with the Milton Keynes team for the next four Formula 1 seasons, ending months of speculation that the German could be switching to Ferrari in the near future.

After making his Formula 1 debut as a one-off BMW replacement for the injured Robert Kubica and scoring a point at the 2007 American Grand Prix, Vettel switched to Toro Rosso for 2008 and stunningly seized both pole position and a maiden race victory in the wet Italian Grand Prix.

He moved to the sister team in 2009, notching up its own first pole and victory in an equally drenched Shanghai, before finishing runner-up to Jenson Button in the drivers’ World Championship.

In 2010, the German - a graduate of the Red Bull Junior Team - only led the standings for the first time after shaking off the challenge of Fernando Alonso, team-mate Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton to seal the crown as F1's youngest ever title winner with the top podium step in Abu Dhabi.

Mercedes keen to re-sign Schumacher

Mercedes Motorsport boss Norbert Haug has said that the company would be more than happy to retain Michael Schumacher before the German’s current contract expires as the end of the 2012 season. The seven-time World Champion is currently entering his second of three planned terms with the silver arrows.

Now 42, Schumacher made a highly-unexpected return to the Grand Prix scene with the Stuttgart-based manufacturer last year, although Haug insists that the deal may run for longer than the currently planned trio of seasons.

“If Michael wants to renew and we can agree on a good price, I’d be very happy.” Haug, Mercedes’ Vice President for Motorsport, explained to German publication Bild.

“Of course we are open to discussions because we feel the team very good,” added Sabine Kehm, now manager to Schumacher. “Michael is totally motivated and Mercedes Grand Prix can still give a lot.”
