Honda Civic Hybrid and Toyota Prius battery replacement costs revealed!

The Star has a very interesting report which came out yesterday. It answers some of the questions that many motorists thinking of taking the leap to hybrid ownership will be asking, based on interviewing spokespersons from both Toyota and Honda, the only two companies which are selling hybrid cars in Malaysia that benefit from the new zero percent import and excise duty. Porsche also sells the Cayenne Hybrid here but because of its engine size, it doesn’t get any exemptions.
I would only take the battery prices information seriously as everything else are just claims that the cars have no issues.
  • The Toyota Prius battery costs RM11,500.
  • The Honda Civic Hybrid battery costs RM12,000 but there is a 15% discount for customers who buy from authorized dealers.
  • Prius warranty is 3 years or 100,000km which covers battery too.
  • Civic Hybrid warranty for battery is 3 years or 100,000km.
  • UMW Toyota claims there have not been a single battery replacement due to wear and tear in the US, where all generations of Prius have been on sale since 2000.
  • Priuses used as taxis in the US have clocked 400,000km without any hybrid component failure.
  • A Prius taxi that clocked 550,000km in Australia needed battery replacement due to a low voltage reading.

setakat dari pemerhatian aku, harga bateri semakin mahal. tak salah aku, harga battery dah dua kali naik sejak kebelakangan ni. kalau la harga battery murah in future, mungkin technology battery makin baik, replacement yg similar AH but cheaper material.

cuma aku ada risau la sikit, batteries ni shorten dia punya life time dalam keadaan panas. sbb tu design utk battery room tak leh panas. tapi tatau la battery utk hybrid car ni. ada sesetengah kereta yg batterynya dalam engine jugak tapi located dalam compartment khas atau jauh dari bhgn panas.
my 2 sen la...

1st of all, prius tak pakai lithium batteries.
2nd, dulu-duluuuuuu tu pun handphone tak pakai lithium batteries
3rd, dulu lithium batteries tak as mass produce as nowadays, logiknya, "lagi banyak lagi murah, lagi bagus teknologi pembuatan lagi cepat, lagi cepat lagi jimat, lagi jimat lagi murah..." dulu company2 kaya je bole buat battery. skrg, semua kat China.
4th, technology electronik makin berkembang. dulu nak power-up komputer sebesar rumah memerlukan HT line. Skrg nak guna laptop boleh pakai palam 12V kat dlam kete plus inverter. henpon dulu power hungry, henpon sekrang amcam?

so sehingga engineers toyota boleh solve masalah compatible lithium battery dengan sistem prius, lithium battery ni tak bole lagi digunakan. harapnya 2012 ada la kete prius guna lithium batteries.

so andaikata, 2012 toyota berjaya men'asimilasi'kan lithium bateri dan sistem dalam prius 2012, adakah sistem prius dalam generasi 2010 dan sebelumnya compatible dengan lithium battery?

wa lebih risaukan warranti banding dgn rega bateri...kalo kt ostolia toyota, honda leh bg waranti smp 6-7thn utk hybrid,wa x npk nape dorang x leh bg benda yg sama kt m'sia...kena igt sesetengah tpt kt ostolia cuacanya lebih brutal banding kt m'sia...tp still dorang leh bg waranti yg lama utk hybrid...npk sgt market hybrid m'sia ni x penting bg dorang

andaikata bateri 4-5thn akan dtg reganya dlm 8k...penjimatan dr petrol dah leh cover kos utk bateri...katakan keta biasa tiap bln spend rm300 utk petrol, hybrid lak dlm rm150 jek...kt situ jek dah leh jimat 9k utk 5 thn...kena igt yg rega petrol akan naik..skg leh laa rm1.85 1 liter..akan dtg mungkin rm1.90...so penjimatannya akan lebih dr rm150 sebulan..dlm 5 thn bkn takat leh cover kos bateri silap2 leh beli plak motor ex5 sebijik

kalau takut pasal bateri...ni hah, mazda2 yg bakal kuar, tak hybrid, tak elektrik...petrol?diesel aje....tapi FC lebih jimat dari kete hybrid

TOKYO: Mazda Motor Corp said on Wednesday its next Mazda2/Demio subcompact would get fuel economy of 30 km/litre (70 mpg) without the help of an electric motor, likely making it the most fuel-efficient gasoline car on the road.

The vehicle will be launched in Japan in the first half of 2011 as the first product to be equipped with Mazda's next-generation engine and transmission technology, dubbed SKYACTIV.

Mazda is aiming to improve fuel economy on its cars by 30 percent by 2015 compared with 2008 levels without the use of a hybrid system. "We are aiming to launch a car that is fully equipped with SKYACTIV technologies globally in 2012," Chief Executive Officer Takashi Yamanouchi told a news conference.

Japanese minivehicle maker Daihatsu Motor Co has also said it aimed to develop a gasoline car that achieves fuel economy of 30 km/litre -- equivalent to what the "mild" hybrid version of Honda Motor Co's new Fit subcompact gets.

"I promise that we will offer the Demio at a lower price than a hybrid of the same segment," Yamanouchi said. While Mazda has no hybrid system of its own, it is seen as among the most advanced automakers in internal combustion engine and weight reduction technology.

Mazda said its new direct injection gasoline engine achieves big mileage improvements mainly due to the world's highest engine compression ratio. Yamanouchi said Mazda planned to build on its existing technologies to eventually develop hybrids, plug-in hybrids and pure electric cars.

In his opening remarks, Yamanouchi repeated Mazda's official statement that its strategic relationship with top shareholder Ford Motor Co remained intact. Ford is planning to sell most of its 11 percent stake in Mazda, worth just over $500 million, possibly by the end of the year, a source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters at the weekend.

Despite their wide-ranging cooperation, Mazda and Ford have gone their separate ways in developing cleaner vehicles. Mazda in March turned to Toyota Motor Corp for help in developing its first hybrid car. Mazda's shares were up 1.4 percent in mid-afternoon trade, outperforming a drop in other Japanese auto stocks and the benchmark Nikkei average's 1.7 percent fall.

Mazda has announced that it is to launch new petrol and diesel-poweredcars with the same fuel efficiency as, or better than, rivalhybrid-powertrain vehicles. A petrol version of the Mazda2, featuringthe company’s new Skyactiv G (gasoline) technology, is to becomeavailable on the Japanese market during the first half of next year. Itis claimed to return a consumption figure of 3,3 litres/100 km.
Company CEO Takashi Yamanouchi pointed out in a press briefing Iattended in Tokyo that petrol engines typically had an efficiency levelof 30 per cent. Mazda believes that, by working smart with currenttechnology without resorting to add-ons, it will eventually be possibleto build engines that claw back much of the fuel heat capacity lost inthe process of turning chemical energy from fuel into mechanical energy.
The efficiency shortfall is due to factors such as the smallpercentage of fuel that remains unburned, as well as cooling losses, exhaust losses, pumping losses and mechanical losses. Seita Kanai, director of research and development responsible for the Skyactivprogramme, said that engineers had focused on increasing efficiency inthese areas by fine-tuning normally aspirated petrol engines withoutthe use of expensive external aids such as turbochargers orsuperchargers, as some other manufacturers are currently doing.
Innovations on the new petrol unit include a high 14,0 to 1compression ratio, with kinetic knock controlled through items such asmulti-hole injectors, cavities in the pistons and a 4-2-1 exhaustsystem. Further benefits achieved by innovative use of basic technologyinclude reduced pumping losses, reduced weight and reduced mechanicalfriction. Naturally, the company’s innovative i-stop stop-start system, honoured in CAR’s annual industry awards, is part of the package. Theengine can run on normal 95 RON fuel, so should be able to operate onSouth African petrol.
Turning to turbodiesels, Kanai-san said that his team had managedto increase eficiency by lowering the compression ratio to 14,0 to 1,optimising combustion timing, reducing the weight of components andthus reducing mechanical friction and employing two-stageturbocharging. Among the other technical innovations are multi-holepiezo injectors and a variable exhaust-valve mechanism.
Benefits included a 20 per cent improvement in fuel efficiencycompared with other similar small diesels, major enhancement of low andmid-range torque, with a smoot, linear response and no need for costlyNOx post-processing to meet forthcoming emission standards in the US,Japan and Europe. The engine will run on current Japanese or Euro dieselfuel, but Kanai-san was unable to say whether it would be compatiblewith South African diesel. Mazda does not currently sell its moderndiesel cars in South Africa, though the BT-50 pick-up range usesolder-tech diesel powerplants.
The Skyactiv engines will be used in conjunction with otherefficiency-improving features such as new lightweight manual andautomatic gerarboxes (the latter featuring a dramatically expancedlock-up range), lighter and more rigid bodyshells, lightweightsuspension systems and electric power-steering.
