The 30 UK beauty spots that every Briton should visit during their lifetime have been revealed – and ranked - with the world-famous prehistoric monument Stonehenge in Wiltshire and the iconic White Cliffs of Dover voted joint first (40 per cent).

Stonehenge has a history of 4,500 years and stands at the centre of the Avebury World Heritage Site. The purpose of Stonehenge still remains a mystery, but it's believed it was created as a spiritual home by Neolithic and Bronze Age people, with the sarsen stones carefully aligned with the movement of the sun.

The White Cliffs of Dover are located in Kent along the English coastline and look out to the Strait of Dover and France. One of the country's most spectacular natural features, the cliffs are an official icon of Britain and have been a sign of hope and freedom for centuries.

Wiltshire's Stone Henge joins the White Cliffs of Dover in first place with 40 per cent of the votes. The mysterious monument is believed to have been a spiritual home to Neolithic and Bronze Age people

The study, by Vision Express, found that Snowdonia in Wales (2nd, 38 per cent), Ben Nevis in Scotland (3rd, 37 per cent) and Lake Windermere (4th, 36 per cent) are also key sights for Britons.
Other bucket-list beauty spots on the list include Cornwall's St Ives Harbour (5th, 34 per cent), Cheddar Gorge in Somerset (joint 6th, 32 per cent), breathtaking city views from the London Eye (joint 6th, 32 per cent) and historic Hadrian's Wall (7th, 31 per cent), which is 73 miles long and was built as a border point for the wild north-west frontier of the Roman Empire.
The Giant's Causeway (8th, 29 per cent), Northern Ireland's only World Heritage site and part of the popular Game of Thrones Tour, is also a 'must see' for Brits, followed by Arthur's Seat (joint 9th, 25 per cent), with its views of Edinburgh, St Michael's Mount (joint 9th, 25 per cent) in Cornwall and the Needles (joint 9th, 25 per cent), situated on the Isle of Wight.

Snowdonia in Wales was awarded second place, with 38 per cent of the votes. Pictured is the historic steam train that runs from the town of LLanberis to the summit of Mount Snowdon

The research found that three in five Brits (60 per cent) admit that there are plenty of world-famous British sights they have yet to experience. Pictured is Ben Nevis, which came in third with 37 per cent of the votes

The ranking, produced by a poll of 1,500 Britons, also revealed that no one should miss seeing Canterbury Cathedral (10th, 23 per cent) and Durdle Door (11th, 21 per cent) in Dorset.

Brighton's Royal Pavilion (20 per cent), Portmeirion in Wales (20 per cent) and the Welsh Brecon Beacons were all voted joint 12th (20 per cent), while the Whitby Abbey ruins in Yorkshire (19 per cent), the Seven Sisters White Cliffs in Sussex (19 per cent), and Chatsworth House, Bakewell (19 per cent), came in at joint 13th.

Dan McGhee, Director of Optical Services at Vision Express, said: 'We know there is so much joy to be had through vision and discovering more through a new lens. Our research shows that there are some amazing places right here in the UK to enjoy with your loved ones.'

A stunning limestone gorge in the Mendip Hills, Cheddar Gorge in Somerset comes in joint sixth place (32 per cent), alongside St Ives Harbour and the London Eye

The research also found that three in five Brits (60 per cent) admit that there are plenty of world-famous British sights they have yet to experience.

And it's no surprise, an accompanying statement said, that almost two thirds (65 per cent) have vowed to see more of Britain this year than they have done in the past 12 months.

Forty-three per cent of the Britons polled admit that they can sometimes forget just how breathtaking the UK can be, with 48 per cent claiming that the UK is one of the most beautiful places to live in the world.

When it comes to experiencing the UK's most beautiful sights, 38 per cent would like to see them with their children, while 71 per cent would like to make it a romantic moment with their partner.

Seventy-six per cent claim that seeing a UK beauty spot is all the more special if you've shared it with a loved one.
