bak kate keanu reeves dalam filem the day the earth stood still:
if earth die, you die... if you die, earth survive...

Global Warming -- Update: ancaman percutian global

* teringat cerita  day after tomorrow  pulak...

The Ice Has It

More evidence of global warming from study of Arctic
winter ice

A NASA scientist has wrested free of his muzzle to
declare that the drastic melt of Arctic sea ice is
likely caused by global warming. New research
published in Geophysical Research Letters shows that
for the past two winters, Arctic sea-ice growth at its
peak has been 6 percent below the average peak since
1978, consistent with scientific models of
human-caused global warming. Arctic summer ice
reduction had already been decreasing steadily for
years, with the last four summers showing record low
ice cover. Lead author Josefino Comiso, a senior
research scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight
Center, called the new data "the strongest evidence of
global warming in the Arctic so far." And if NASA data
and computer simulations are right, says Comiso, "this
has a very large chance of continuing." Meanwhile, a
separate study in Nature has concluded that heat from
the sun is not a factor in global warming, as changes
in the sun's brightness over the century have been too
small to markedly affect the planet's climate.

hahaha... macamana bole silap la nie..... betul la...ianya menurun... but  the main point is perkataan tiba-tiba tu....

... emmm.. tak boleh nak bayang... macamana current boleh disrupt...North Atlantic current lak tu (giler dahsyat... rasanya mahu habis cair seluruh arctic tu...)

Signs of warming continue in the Arctic with a decline in sea ice, an increase in shrubs growing on the tundra
and rising concerns about the Greenland ice sheet.
For the past five years, it was at least 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit above average over the Arctic over the entire year.

The new "State of the Arctic" analysis, released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, also reports
an increase in northward movement of warmer water through the Bering Strait in 2001-2004.
This may have contributed to a continuing reduction of sea ice.

During that time, there were record lows in sea ice coverage in the region.
This year there was more normal coverage in the Bering area but a record low on the Atlantic side of the Arctic.

Indeed, the report said Arctic sea ice coverage this past March was the lowest in winter since measurements
by satellite began in the early 1970s. The sea ice decline is now being observed in both winter and summer.

A lot of indicators of climate change in the Arctic and that may be an indicator for change in other parts of the world.
Most of the heating from the sun comes to the equator and subequatorial regions, and a lot of heat leaves by radiation
from Arctic.

The temperature difference between the Arctic and equator drives all of our weather. If the Arctic warms up and that
difference is reduced, weather could change, though people remain unsure about the effect.

The autumn of 2006 has been the warmest in the Netherlands for over 300 years, 12.5 percent hotter than
the previous year which was already a record, beating the record by more than 1 degree centigrade.

The average temperature for the months leading up to November 17 was up to 13.5 degrees (56 degrees F),
as compared to 12 degrees last year, which was already the hottest autumn on record.

The average over the last three centuries for this period of the year has been 9.9 degrees.

At least three factors are responsible for the increased temperatures: global warming, winds from the south that
have blown over the Netherlands more than in most years, and a slower cooling down after an exceptionally
hot summer, especially in July. ~Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute ~

korang korang, tu ari aku tgk la Discovery Channel kan, dorang ade la kaji psal events of global warming ni and kesan kesannya, ade sorang scientist dr Utah ke Texas, dia cakap, bile artic dgn antartic dah cair, air laut mesti naik, maldives and all the low lying plains mmg bawah air, confirm

then dia citer mende lain plak, kemungkinan kesannya kpd kerak bumi pun dahsyat gak, sbb skang volume air dah lain, so dead load air yg dikenakan pd kerak bumi pun dah ubah, dia kate, perhaps pattern gempa bumi dan taufan jugak berubah, bit by bit, and bila earthquake tu, biasa la, mesti ada faults yg bergeser gila gila punya, and of course the unimaginable tsunami....eeeee

tapi dia kata, progress ke arah tu telah dipercepatkan akibat perbuatan manusia sendiri. maybe less than 100 years.

p/s tanak aku tgk ombak tinggi gunung! wagrhhh

Another potential effect of Arctic warming is one that concerns an increase in volcanic activity.
The retreat of glaciers capping volcanically active Iceland is expected to increase the frequency
of volcanic eruptions, as the pressure of the ice mass on the Earth's crust lessens.

Scientists are becoming increasingly aware of various possible consequences and endeavouring
to predict what sort of a world coming generations will face.

Arctic ice field could melt by 2080

The Arctic Ocean's ice field could melt entirely by 2080 due to global warming, a group of European scientists
meeting in the northern Germany city of Bremen announced.

"If the situation evolves as physics predicts, the Arctic Ocean's summertime ice fields will completely disappear
by 2080," said Eberhard Fahrbach of the Alfred Wegner Institute (AWI), a member of the European Arctic
research body DAMOCLES.

At present, the polar ice cap's size varies according to the season, with parts melting and refreezing
throughout the year. According to Fahrbach's prediction, there would be no permanently frozen areas in
a matter of decades.

"That has consequences going much further than the Arctic," he added.

Climatic change threatens the polar bears of the region, for example, but also the entire food chain.
"It also has an effect on the fish which ultimately end up on our tables," the scientist added.

The DAMOCLES program (Developing Arctic Modeling and Observing Capabilities for Long-term Environmental
Studies) is a European project aimed at monitoring and forecasting climate changes in the Arctic.

huhu...
br jwb paper exam hr tu: what do artic ecosystems look like in 100 years' time?
ni la jwpnnye...
1. tundra vegetation slowly turn to boreal forest vegetation
2. the tree lines will move upwards
3. melting of permafrost
4. albedo decreases
5. species extinct including flora n fauna
these all will happen gradually without our awareness

masya Allah....

WASHINGTON - Human-caused global warming is here, visible in the air, water and melting ice, and is destined to get much
worse in the future, an authoritative global scientific report will warn next week.

"The smoking gun is definitely lying on the table as we speak," said top U.S. climate scientist Jerry Mahlman, who reviewed all
1,600 pages of the first segment of a giant four-part report. "The evidence ... is compelling."

Andrew Weaver, a Canadian climate scientist and study co-author, went even further: "This isn't a smoking gun; climate is a
batallion of intergalactic smoking missiles."

The first phase of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is being released in Paris next week. This segment, written
by more than 600 scientists and reviewed by another 600 experts and edited by bureaucrats from 154 countries, includes
"a significantly expanded discussion of observation on the climate," said co-chair Susan Solomon, a senior scientist for the U.S.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
That report will feature an "explosion of new data" on observations of current global warming, Solomon said.

Solomon and others wouldn't go into specifics about what the report says. They said that the 12-page summary for policymakers
will be edited in secret word-by-word by governments officials for several days next week and released to the public on Feb. 2.
The rest of that first report from scientists will come out months later.
The full report will be issued in four phases over the year, as was the case with the last IPCC report, issued in 2001.

Global warming is "happening now, it's very obvious," said Mahlman, a former director of NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Lab
who lives in Boulder, Colo. "When you look at the temperature of the Earth, it's pretty much a no-brainer."

Look for an "iconic statement"

Water found under Antarctic ice to raise sea level forecasts

Alok Jha, science correspondent
Friday February 16, 2007

Scientists have detected a network of lakes and rivers ofrapidly moving water under the thick ice sheet of West Antarctica, a discovery that will force a revision of predictions of global sea levels as the sheet melts due to climate change.

"What we're seeing here is a lot more movement of stuff underneath the Antarctic ice sheet than we ever dreamt possible. This has been going on for along time," said David Vaughan of the British Antarctic Survey.

The faster the water moves inthe sub-glacial lakes the more quickly any melting ice from the heart of the continent will get into the open sea, causing water levels to rise. "The way we model the ice sheets to predict how they will behave in the future, how they will contribute to sea level rise in the future, doesn't take into account all of this [new work]," said Prof Vaughan.

The latest scientific report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said that an uncertainty about how ice sheets responded to climate change was the biggest unknown in predicting sea levels around the world. "We can't make faithful predictions of what's going to happen to Antarctica unless we get this process understood," said Helen Fricker ofthe Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr Fricker used satellite data to map the rise and fall of the overlying ice- which is up to 3km thick - as the lakes emptied and filled with water. "Over a period of three years from 2003 to 2006 we found regions where the elevation had changed dramatically - the first lake we found had deflated bynine metres, which we were just amazed to see," Dr Fricker said. Herresults are published today in Science.

More than 145 isolated lakes have been previously reported to exist under the ice sheet. But new bodies of water have been discovered by Dr Fricker'steam, ranging in size from 120 to 500 square kilometres (46 to 193 squaremiles), in 14 places around Antarctica and many are connected by rapidly moving water channels.

"The old paradigm was that most of the Antarctic was frozen to its bed. In a few places there was free water at the bottom and that was lubricating fast ice flow and that was all very steady, nothing changed very much,"Prof Vaughan said. But this view had become out of date. "Water is not moving around in a steady trickle but filling up in one place and bursting through to another and this process is more widespread than we thought,"he said.

Dr Fricker said she was surprised by the results."We thought these changes took place over years and decades, but we are seeing large changes over months."
