Amanda the teen sensation
By FAZLEENA AZIZ

AMANDA Imani, 16, is just like any average teenager, except that her distinctive soulful voice makes her stand out above the rest.
Although Amanda has been seen in the equestrian scene, where she trains and takes part in upcoming dressage competition and events, her first and foremost passion is singing.
Amanda said her interest in singing began at a very young age and she aspired to be an international artist.
Teenage sensation: Amanda Imani, 16 performed live at The Attic recently. She performed six songs by artistes like Christina Aguilera, Joss Stone and Alicia Keys.
“My style of singing is very jazzy, RnB and soul. I like these genres because they are very deep and very expressive and are different from the kind of music that kids my age listen to,” she said.
“I want to do as many performances in different places so that I well experienced and comfortable singing on stage. From a very early age, I realised that performing arts is something that I wanted to do. I love the idea of being able to connect to people through singing and even acting,” she said. “It's a medium that allows people to understand who you are or what they story you are trying to tell, which is truly an amazing experience.”
The Sri KDU science student has performed several times at The Atti in Bangsar and at school shows but one particular performance at the Clearwater Century Golf Resort was a memorable one.
Songbird: Amanda was accompanied by piano at The Attic, Bukit Bandaraya, Kuala Lumpur.
“It was a wedding party and I was live on stage with a band in front of more than 500 people. It was quite an unforgettable experience,” Amanda said. “I was really encouraged by the applause and standing ovation by the guests. Some even came to commend me and they were quite surprised with my age. “
Amanda got a chance of a lifetime, when she joined the Starmaker Theatre Bootcamp, the brainchild of Datin Seri Tiara Jacquelina to scout for more musical theatre talents.
“That boot camp was very intensive and reassuring because I realized at the time that this is what I wanted to do. I admire Tiara for her grace and talent; she is someone that I look up to,” Amanda said. “I want to do more and I don’t mind even if there is just one person in the audience seat. My mission is to give the best for that one person and make sure that he or she is entertained.”
Amanda said she was also grateful to have understanding parents who allowed her to pursue her dreams.
“I believe that parents should allow their children to be who they are because if they grow up unhappy then even the parents become unhappy. All parents have to do is just listen to what they have to say and I must say I am grateful that my parents did,” she said.
Amanda hopes to pursue performing arts at University of California Los Angeles and have an album out within five years. She not only wants to be known only in Malaysia but also internationally as a diversified singer. |
