Malaysia to launch contest for airborne early warning fleet

By Vladimir Karnozov

Malaysia could issue a request for proposals for four airborne early warning and control system aircraft in mid-2008, with funds for the acquisition likely to become available during the nation's next five-year spending plan.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force has indicated a tentative requirement for a relatively lightweight, low-cost system to improve the situational awareness of its Boeing F/A-18D, RSK MiG-29N and Sukhoi Su-30MKM pilots. The surveillance aircraft should also be capable of monitoring naval vessels, it says, especially in the Malacca Straits.

Candidate systems will include Northrop Grumman's E-2 Hawkeye and Saab 2000 turboprops to be equipped with Saab Microwave Systems' Erieye radar. The Swedish company announced during the LIMA air show in Langkawi on 4-8 December that its proposal would have a loitering capability of at least 9h with five onboard operators.

Air force commander-in-chief Gen Azizan bin Ariffin says AEW&C aircraft "will be the next major acquisition after multirole fighters", but industry sources suggest Kuala Lumpur's immediate priority is to buy new utility helicopters to replace its Sikorsky S-61 Nuris (Flight International, 11-17 December).

Russia has offered to supply Kamov Ka-31 picket helicopters carrying Oko surveillance radars, but its Ilyushin Il-76-based A-50 has been deemed too large and expensive to take part.

None the less, it will take a while. Malaysia has already exhausted her procurement budget already, I believe.

EMB-145 platform has far better success than Saab 2000, thus better support for the maintenance. BUT, the Thai already ordered the Erieye.

wa dengar semacam jer 'low-cost system' tu.  mcm murahan sangat.  murah.  murah.  beli dua, dapat dua.  beli satu, memang dapat satu ler.  LOL.

wa sarankan guna phrase 'cost effective' atau bahasa melayunya, 'kos efektif'.  LOLLOLLLOOLLL....

Mungkin lebih kepada pengganti kepada Beechcraft bg maritime patrol and monitoring roles...Erieye Saab mungkin sesuai being small and lower cost.  Mentos tu mana tahu Mesia dah habis bajet...bapak kau jaga peruntukan pembangunan kerajaan Mesia ke...bila2 je EPU boleh pindah peruntukan dari mana2 dana yg tidak digunakan...just give the directive...:@

If they want to focus on patroling SOM, a low cost system would indeed suffice.
I wonder if balloons with sensors along the coast would be more cost effective for this purpose. fly them up to 500m and station one every 50-100km. Singapore has a balloon system with a stabilised camera.

SG's coastline is rather small compared to MYs. And SG has sufficient patrol vessels to covered it maritime's boundary. So probably stabilised ballons can only be used at some parts, but we do need maritime patrol aircraft. My suggestion is that we go for Erieye for AEW, buy at least 3 CN-235 and convert it into maritime patrol aircarfts for the Navy/AirForce and transfer the Beechcraft to Apam..

Balloons could be low cost coastal surveillance provided air traffic is not too dense in the region.
They can be deployed in some areas along the west coast of peninsula Malaysia.
A balloon 300m high can see more than 100km away. I think the US coast guard to have such operations to control drug smuggling from the sea. Thats why most drugs neter US by land. Maintenance is definitely much much lower than any aircraft with crews. I think they are ideal way of monitoring the busy SOM with so many small crafts.
A quick reaction helo squadron with light attack capability should also be in place. Thats why Nuri replacement should be a priority. I really do not know why this is not settled after so long and so much talk. An old helo just cannot be expected to take on the rigours of all weather rapid deployment and other critical operations.

I say save some money up, then get a package deal of maybe 3-4 embraer erieyes and some MPAs. Embraer does offer MPAs if I remember correctly and nowadays palm oil prices are at record highs...
