MPPP arah henti projek Feringgi Heights

Link to original article

Timbalan Pengarah Lembaga Tabung Haji (LTH) Pulau Pinang, Akmal Abdul Rahim, berkata jemaah haji kumpulan pertama memberi kerjasama baik dan memahami arahan.

CAP call to ban plastic tumblers

By : Audrey Dermawan

Link to original article

CAP president Datuk S.M. Mohamed Idris

GEORGE TOWN: The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) is calling for an immediate ban on the use of plastic water bottles made from polycarbonate in schools.

CAP claims polycarbonate bottles could have detrimental effects on the health of children as it leaches out bisphenol A (BPA).

BPA has been linked with health problems such as impairment of reproductive organs and tumour formation.

BPA is also an "environmental hormone" which disrupts the endocrine system of humans and animals.

Its president, S.M. Mohamed Idris, said here yesterday: "With the coming of the new school year, parents will buy water bottles for their schoolgoing children.

"However, they should avoid getting water bottles made from polycarbonate. We will write to the Education Ministry and other authorities to alert them about this."

Idris said BPA could leach into the content of the bottles through normal wear and tear, as well as exposure to heat and cleaning agents.

He said a study conducted by the University of Missouri in the United States and published in the Journal of Environmental Health Perspectives revealed that BPA could even leach into liquids at room temperature.

He added that another study, conducted by researchers in California and published in the journal Cancer Research, had found that many genes in non-cancerous breast cells exposed to trace amounts of BPA began acting in a way that resembled the gene activities in aggressive breast tumour cells.

The study results were designated as a "priority report", published by the American Association of Cancer Research, a leading organisation devoted to study cancer.

"The Canadian Health Ministry is calling BPA a dangerous substance, making it the first regulatory body to take the initial step towards implementing measures to control exposure to the chemical.

"In view of the dangers associated with BPA, CAP calls on the Education Ministry and other authorities to impose a ban on the use of polycarbonate bottles in schools."

CAT links job for 441

Friday March 20, 2009

Link to original article

OUT of the 2,623 job vacancies available through the Penang抯 Career Assistance and Training (CAT) scheme, 441 applicants have already been linked to potential employers.

InvestPenang executive committee chairman Datuk Lee Kah Choon said as of Tuesday, a total of 732 people had already been registered with the centre.

He said among the positions linked to the potential employers were for engineers, technicians, production workers, training instructors, waiters, waitresses, and researchers.

揟he largest group of applicants that the centre has linked is production workers (113) followed by administration, clerical, front office and receptionist (85) and engineers (57).

揑t is difficult for the centre to follow up on how many of the applicants that were linked to the potential employers had been hired but in the long-run, we will try to keep a database on this,拻 he told a press conference at the centre in Komtar yesterday.

The centre is managed by InvestPenang, with support from the Penang Development Corporation (PDC), Penang Municipal Council, Seberang Prai Municipal Council and the Penang Water Supply Corporation.

Lee, who is also the PDC director, said 98% of the applicants had work experience.

He also said that out of 732 people registered with the centre, 445 were males and the rest females.

He said the age group of the applicants ranged from 18 to 65 years old.

揃esides that, JobStreet (an online registration portal) will also organise a free career clinic tomorrow at Auditorium C, Level Five in Komtar from 9am to noon.

揂nd for those interested to apply for production worker posts, there will be a walk-in interview by Select Appointments (a job agency) on the same day and place from 10am to 1pm,拻 he added.

Select Appointments business development consultant Marjo-lein Van Breugel, who was also present at the press conference, said there were 1,600 positions available at an electronics company on the mainland.

Lee said although the centre could match the jobs for them, he urged people to venture into new jobs especially during the economic slowdown.

Those who wish to attend the clinic need to register either by calling S.H. Teoh at 04-2502170/ 018-4656410, email to pgcat@investpenang.gov.my or visit the centre located above the Komtar post office at 1B 11-02-05 and 1B 11-02-3, Komtar.

For the walk-in interview, please contact Michelle Teoh at 04-6381050.

Ribut terbangkan bumbung

Link to original article

Banjir kilat 16 tahun

Oleh HASNURUL MOHAMED
utusanpenang@utusan.com.my

Link to original article

Sg Pinang will be cleaned up in 5 years and cost RM150mil

Published: Saturday March 21, 2009 MYT 7:38:00 PM
By TAN SIN CHOW

Link to original article

GEORGE TOWN: Sungai Pinang, one of the seven most polluted rivers in Malaysia, will be clean enough to swim in about five years and the cleanup will cost RM150mil.

But before that, 300 families living by the river would have to be relocated, said State Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) director Hanapi Mohamad Noor and this is expected to take two years.

“Once that is done, we will start the rehabilitation works which will take three years to complete.

“The entire project will cost RM150mil,” he told reporters after a 2km tour along the river by boats on Saturday.

Also present were state executive councillors Phee Boon Poh and Law Choo Kiang, Datuk Keramat assemblyman Jagdeep Singh and Sungai Pinang assemblyman Koid Teng Guan.

Hanapi said Sungai Pinang was one of the seven most polluted rivers in Malaysia and had was so polluted that it was once deemed Class V with no marine life before the first phase of its rehabilitation, costing RM20mil, was completed in 2007.

Now the river had improved to being between Class III and IV.

On the relocation of the families, Hanapi said 129 buildings comprising 118 houses, six shops, three stores and two temples and would be affected.

“The state government is working out on the compensation plan for the relocation process,” he said.

Hanapi said the second phase of the river rehabilitation would include building of retention ponds and interceptor drains and installation of gross pollutant traps to increase the river water quality to Class II, increase the river’s biodiversity and turn it into a water source and tourism product and beautification work.

He said a study on the cause of pollution showed the wastes and rubbish found in the river were ‘man-made’.

Law said there was certainly ‘a lot of’ room for improvement after the visit.

“I have told the relevant authorities not to hesitate to take action against those who flouted the rules and regulation by throwing rubbish into the river.

“They can just act according to the law,” he said.

Law said he was shocked to learn that more than 120 metric tonne of rubbish and wastes were scooped out from the river annually.

He urged those with information on river polluters to come forward so that action can be taken against the culprit.
