assalamualaikum
these days parents hav become so concerned about english proficiency among their kids. even di forum ni pon kite byk discuss about english - how 2 teach our kids english, how 2 improve english & etc.
shouldnt bahasa also b one of our concerns? syllabus bahasa melayu di sekolah sekarang ni pon quite tough jugak. i hav a nephew yg sgt fluent in english, but his bahasa is quite pitiful. die dh terbalik plak, bile die buat bahasa homework, he has 2 translate the instructions 2 english, then only he could understand. funny, so it sounds... tp, agak merunsingkan jugak, kan?

errmmm....masalah gak nie pd anak, dr segi percakapan OK lagi..sebab bahasa pasar....tp dr segi bahasa penulisan dan kefahaman

setakat nie kalo baca cuku cerita, dia baca lancar tapi kefahaman dlm 50% drp keseluruhan cerita....jadi memang kena duduk dan bincang dgn dia makna2 perkataan tu dgn mendalam...

me perasankan dgn masalah BM nie, byk perbendaharaan kata yg kita tak guna hari2..

mmm... anak2 mac macam tu la. Kat rumah taklah 100% ENGlish, tapi kecenderungan anak2 mmg pada English la, English story books, English movies, English papers. Mungkin terikut2 dgn mac, kut.

Tambahan pulak kawan2 disekolah mostly nonmalays, best friend pun non malays, so even my kids cakap kat mac, I think in English, I dream in english. And yes, their BM is not that good. Well, taklah teruk sangat but tak pernah la score.

So since I have no worries with their proficiency in English, sekarang ni mac lebihkan BM jugak. I seldom buy English books lagi, but more of BM story books.

Mintak maaf la nak cakap, dulu2 mac startkan anak2 cakap ENglish sebab lihat working environment kat tempat mac ni. Siapa yg cepat climb the ladder adalah siapa yg pandai bercakap, who can communicate fluently and confidently in ENGLISH. Kalau u terror from uni days, and terror buat analysis at work and pandai buat kerja TAPI tak pandai bercakap, sorryla nak naik.

Then few yrs after that, tengok2 Kerajaan implement maths dan Science in English. Mmm.... so paham2la kan. Mesti semua org lebih tumpukan English.

Having said that .... i had a nice suprise last week, karangan anak mac on kemerdekaan 50 tahun (in BM) dipilih ke peringkat kebangsaan. Heran bin ajaib sebab this is my girl yg paling "blur" dalam BM..... hehe

Mac kesian dgn budak2 Form 1 yg ambik maths and science in BM masa sekolah rendah, tapi sekarang in sek menengah belajar maths and science in English.....

Kalau tgk buku science mereka (esp Form 3), I can imagine how students yg tak biasa with the English language struggle. heck, even budak2 yg terror english pun mengeluh tau.

I remember reading in the papers, budak2 assunta and another KL school, who speaks english 100% at home. They say form 1 silibus is easy,. Tapi form 2silibus amat mencabar words englishnya....

Itu budak2 bandar yg elite...... apahal pulak dgn anak2 di luar bandar.

Takkan nak turun kan graph...... memanjang???

i agree wit alja
one o the reasons why we ourselves hav difficulties teaching our kids bahasa is bcoz we dun use bahasa buku all the time, do we? kite gune bahasa pasar je kt umah. & wit all these techie thing going on, who writes letters anymore except bile mintak keje... u know la how email language looks like kan... so rojak & all... mane ade kids write snail mails lagi... so exercise yg teachers bg dh x authentic anymore...

nuqman
btul la tu... sumtimes bile nk cr word 4 word translation pon terbagi english definition jugak instead o malay words...

my nephew tu, once he asked his dad "papa, ape ni? rempah ratus? berapa ratus ade rempah tu papa?"
  camno nk ajar tu? hihi

anak saya, dapat pelajar terbaik bahasa inggeris dalam darjah...  tahun ni plak jumpa cikgu ambil report card, sampai kan cikgu tak tahu mana nak cari salah dia untuk subjek english...
tapi saya sedikit kecewa sebab dia tak boleh score bahasa malaysia... kekadang tu ada perkataan melayu yg saya terpaksa translate ke inggeris utk bagi dia paham... walhal saya dan wife tak menitik beratkan satu subject tertentu je masa belajar... kami rasa persekitaran terutama minat dia tengok astro channel 63 since channel tu ujud byk bantu dia secara tak langsung... (sampaikan kami pun tak dapat nak tengok astro)

mac
mmg the implementation o science & math in english so far has done more harm than good kot. the urban kids mmg bleh score but the rural ones? i hav a friend teaching math sumwhere in sg lembing, pahang - she asked the kids 2 draw a 'column' & guess wat she got? a 'kolam' ok???

in the long run, mb yes, bleh membuahkn hasil yg memberangsangkn, tp awal2 ni, it's pretty hard 2 tell... but nst has done a superb job in promoting english kt skolah... wit all the sponsorship prog, insya allah the rural kids will soon b able 2 compete wit their urban counterparts...

back 2 the topic, mmg btul kids kt urban schools ramai yg gune english as their means o communication. lagi plak bile ramai kwn2 fr other races, o coz they nd english 2 survive. but every once a while, mb we could encourage them 2 use bahasa kan... at least derang pon bleh improve

psl channel 63 tu..it's so true
ada collegue kat opis anak dia 3 YO dh boleh speak in english
dia kata dia tak la ajar, but mmg anak dia terikut channel 63
like ' mom, i'm having fever!!!', sambil gaya tangan tekap kat dahi..
dia pun terperanjat dengar anak dia buat sentences

pastu aku pon nk anak ckp english, sanggup langgan astro channel 63
sekali hampeehh nyer astro, elok anak aku 2 tahun channel ceria available
apalagi, anak aku asyik tgk ceriaaaaa jek...kat taska pon tgk ceria...

but frankly, i do think it's ok if the child is english literate
coz later in the school days diorg akan mingle dgn ramai kenkawan
and finally would be able to use bahasa sebaik nyer
coz like me, i'm not english literate sangat..but my bahasa is not good jugak
bukan bermakna kalo english dia bagus, bahasa dia akan kaput
the thing is, kalo nk anak bagus bahasa then we have to take bahasa as a subject yang kena byk latihan, byk pemahaman, byk ulangkaji
coz b4, parents lebih tumpukan subject cam math, english, and science
so kalo kita dh nampak 'bunga-bunga' bahawa bahasa melayu atau subject bahasa anak tak bagus then there's step we should take la...

zaman aku dulu lain, i guess bahasa at zaman adik2 aku pon mcm lain.

after all, aku tetap akan mempersoalkan noun "Perdana Menteri" was it supposed to be as "Menteri Perdana" bcoz masa aku belajar dulu, kata nama mesti dahulu baru diikuti dgn kata adjektif mcm Menteri Pembangunan, Menteri Pelajaran, but when it comes to katanama "Perdana Menteri" how can suddenly break the rules??

confusing kan BM nie...seriesly......i guess thats why bahasa is quite tough...tp confuse dier pon mcm ntah ...non-value added after all..maksod aku, budak2 cuma belajar utk pass exam jek (mcm aku laa...haha) in daily routine, i still speak bahasa ikot bahasa pasarnyer gak...ekekek

salam

me rasa nie masalah perspektif org2 kita dgn bahasa sendiri, BM tak melambangkan ketamadunan bangsa..BM tak melambangkan prestige sesatu kaum kat melaya, bahasa nie dah jadi isu darjat manjat kat negara kita...

kalo nak bandingkan kesusahan BM dgn bahasa lain, rasanya tak adil kot...english sendiri byk break the rules, anak2 yg belajar phonatic akan lebih paham kenapa FORD dan harford tak boleh disebut dlm sebutan yg sama ikut phonics...

dr segi nahu bahsa, BM lagi mudah nak paham, senang nak dipraktikan....semua kita hentam, semalam, hari ni, minggu depan semua guna kata "perbuatan" yg sama, tak cam english...tapi disebabkan unsur2 lain dlm bahasa nie buat kita pinggirkan secara terhormat...

me tak suka anak nie tgk citer melayu zaman sekarang, esp rancangan TV3 ala2 moden kononnn...nak tgk citer melayu, tgk citer zaman ahmad nordin, zaman p.ramlee, zaman siti tanjung perak...bahsa mereka puitis...sakit jiwa dgn jalaludin cakap omputih sebab dia CEO...

p/s... tuai padi antara masak, esok jgn layu-layuan....

isu nie kena praktikal kot...kalo kita belajar standard german pun takleh nak hidup senang kat swiss sebab bahasa harian depa adalah swiss-german aka bahasa pasar...

jadi takde bezanya dgn negara kita

lagi satu kite ni ade misconception, english kn ajar... meanwhile bahasa wil come along later on... anyway, we r malays, xkan hilang bahasa tu... wat a misconception...

i hav a japanese fren, she's studying malay literature @ usm. die kate sshnye nk cari institution yg ajar bahasa, tp english berlambak2...

terpk plak, kite ni terlalu emphasize on english language, smpaikn nk cari language centers un bahasa pon susah...

BM nie bukan bahasa ilmu...itu yg masalah yg me rasa plg meruncing, susah nak carik rujukkan buku dlm BM

kalo bAhasa ilmu, ianya bersifat dinamik...kita nak mudah, kita alih semua perkataan dr english ke melayu...jadilah bahasa melayu

me kalo baca buku BM, kepala nie dok ligat mengalih bahasa...lelama penat sendiri...hehehe

Bila pikir...malu jugak kat dia...kitorang cakap macam pasembur...
