Left, 1999: Miss Roberts reveals an ungroomed armpit. Right: The same frock in 2006, but no underarm display this time
Julia wears that hair-raising dress again
You might have thought it was a frock Julia Roberts would rather forget.
The last time she wore the distinctive sequined number, she drew astonished gasps by revealing an unruly growth of underarm hair when she waved to fans at the London premiere of the film Notting Hill.
Seven years on, Miss Roberts decided to give the dress another outing. The 38-year-old actress wore the red-and-pink knee-length shift designed by Vivienne Tam to greet fans on Broadway at the weekend.
The decision raised eyebrows among fashionistas, confused as to why the actress would drag an old frock from the back of her wardrobe to wear on the final performance of her threemonth run in Three Days Of Rain.
Maybe she thought everyone had forgotten that night in 1999 when she bared her hairy armpits to the world.
It is unlikely that she shunned more up-to-date designs as an economy measure. A year after the dress made its debut, Miss Roberts became the first female member of Hollywood's socalled 20/20 club, whose members earn $20million (?11million) a movie plus a 20 per cent cut of the box office. She is now worth an estimated ?92million.
Back in 1999, her grooming gaffe rather overshadowed the premiere in Leicester Square. Her then boyfriend Benjamin Bratt was said to be responsible for the unsightly underarm outcrop, as he found it a 'turn-on'.
Miss Roberts said days later: 'You'd think it was like chinchilla I had under there the way the world responded.'
Having since married cameraman Danny Moder, she is said to have returned to conventional grooming habits, although she did not raise her arms at the weekend to prove the point.
Recycling the dress also proved Miss Roberts has managed to regain her figure after giving birth to twins 18 months ago. |
