Avalanches have always occurred in the mountainous regions of the world though with the growth of winter-time recreations, fatalities have been on the rise since the 1950s. The year 1999 has already been a particularly deadly year for avalanches in the United States - fourteen people have been killed since January 1. A single avalanche in Cumberland Pass, Colorado on February 6 killed two skiers and a snomobiler. That same day, two others died in California and Utah.
Ninety percent of all avalanches occur on moderate slopes with an angle of 30 |
