May God bless adik Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Gadaffi and reward him for his love of His book.

The death of the 11-year-old pupil in a Kota Tinggi private religious school (sekolah tahfiz) is indeed tragic. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family.

How sad that certain liberals have so quickly latched on to Thaqif’s most regrettable demise to call for the closure of religious schools.

⇓  Mariam Mokhtar calls for sekolah tahfiz to be shut down and the Education Minister to be sacked

Malaysian @twitmsian

1:15 PM - 30 Apr 2017

Mariam castigating country’s “ugly underbelly”

Mariam Mokhtar has again shown her anti-conservative bias and prejudice against orthodox Muslims.

Is she one of those Malay liberals threatened by the existence of a holistic religious curriculum in Islamic institutions that does not conform with secularism?

If Mariam were the Minister of Education – Allah forbid – her knee-jerk response would be to immediately close these schools ... blah, blah, blah … “until a set of guidelines are issued nationwide to prevent more Thaqif type incidents”.

Observe how she lumped an unfortunate death under the omnibus “Thaqif type incidents”. It is easy for her to talk about “torture” (her word) for the sake of sensationalism.

Mariam further writes in FMT, “The people in authority […] are apparently immune from accountability. We have seen this in the MH370 tragedy, in the murder of the Altantuya Shaariibuu and in Pastor Raymond Koh’s disappearance”.

My advice to Mariam is to stop speculating and let police do their job, both in the pastor Raymond and Mohamad Thaqif cases.

She should also recall her own cultural roots and the Malay idiom ‘Sayangkan anak tangan-tangankan’.

And talking about people in authority who are apparently immune from accountability, why don’t we discuss pedophilia by Christian volunteers? (More on this shortly.)

Farouk’s disapproval of the smacking hadith

Self-styled ‘Islamologist’ Farouk A. Peru does not believe that Islam can ever be a religion which advances a “culture of abuse”.

Writing in Facebook, Farouk quotes an authentic hadith classed as sahih by al-Albaani in al-Irwa’ (247).

Following the English translation used by Farouk, Muslims are instructed to “smack” their children (lightly) if they do not perform prayer by the time they reach 10 years of age.

Since Farouk is a Quranist who feels he does not need hadith to understand Islam his way, it stands to reason that his personal version of Islam does not warrant elders to lightly smack in order to make youngsters pray.

However there is wisdom in this hadith that Farouk fails to appreciate.

The ‘lightly’ proviso mentioned does not allow Muslims to smack ‘hard’. On the other hand, it would be troubling if – without this limit enjoined by the said hadith – parents were instead to smack as much as they want.

Nor would Muslim parents smack children younger than ten years old for the purpose of encouraging diligent prayer. What Prophet Muhammad teaches us is that we may familiarize our young ones to pray.

But there is another hadith where Prophet Muhammad pbuh reminds Muslims to be compassionate to the teenagers because God has created them with a sensitive heart.

Additionally, Farouk labels administrators of those for-profit-tahfiz schools as “penjaja agama”.

In his Apr 28 article published by Mariam, he writes:

“Ini [kematian Thaqif] bukan takdir Tuhan, ini kebodohan ulamak-ulamak pentadbir sekolah yang tidak faham bagaimana menguruskan institusi.”

Although the last thing I wish is to diminish the tragedy, nonetheless may I remind Farouk that it was a one-off.

If he must compare, then he should contrast sekolah tahfiz with Sunday schools where systemic sexual abuse has long been conducted by clergymen, and then covered up when threatened with exposure.

These Christian ‘wardens’ scandalously take advantage of young children placed in their charge for the purpose of religious education.

And by the way, it is rude and offensive of Farouk – see his Facebook below –to characterize the recitation of our Holy Quran (in the kind of school Thaqif attended) as a daily, memorized singing.

Abuse happens in Chinese school too

Caning does not only take place in sekolah tahfiz. The teacher’s rotan is ‘colour blind’ – to borrow a term beloved of Dapsters.

Were our social justice warriors (SJWs) equally perturbed by cases of misadventure in the wake of corporal punishment/bullying that had previously occurred in vernacular school?

In April 2009, a nine-year-old pupil of SJK (C) Kampung Baru Tiong near Gemas mysteriously died several hours after being caned on the back of his hand by a teacher.

Chan Qi Xian had complained of severe headache after he was caned for not doing his homework. Negeri Sembilan State Education Department director Abdullah Mohammad was reported in The Star as saying the caning punishment “is a normal thing to do”.

Was any uproar being heard then?

In October 2014, FMT headlined one of its news reports, ‘Student viciously beaten-up, teachers do nothing’.

It concerned a Chinese vernacular school student who suffered “a deep gash on his forehead”. The teacher apparently told his mother it was “just a small cut”.

The boy had also been “kicked on his chest” and “repeatedly punched in the face”.

And as recently as a fortnight ago, one Year Three pupil was reported as entertaining suicidal thoughts after his Moral Education teacher allegedly urged classmates to boycott and isolate him.

The father made a complaint against a Chinese vernacular school in Johor Bahru.

Do our liberals care about the safety and welfare of pupils subjected to the very strict discipline and authoritarianism in Chinese schools?

Sexual abuse of children by Christian charity worker

Islamophobes react as if aberrations are nowhere else to be found in our country except in the institutions of Islam. Well, what about abuses occurring in the house of the Religion of Love?

Remember the author of a 60-page handbook titled ‘Pedophiles & Poverty: Child Lover Guide’? He is the pedophile Richard Huckle who’s been described as a “committedChristian“.

In the middle of last year, Huckle was convicted of raping 22 Malaysian children he had groomed while carrying out volunteer work with Christian charities in KL.

(Note: Huckle abused kids in the New Hope for Children orphanage in Bangalore, India as well as children in Cambodia. He even abused a baby still in nappies.)

The British sicko has been sentenced to life in prison.

Following the linear logic of Malaysian liberals, those sexual assaults committed by Huckle would be reason enough to shutter all children’s activities connected with Christian orphanages and charities.

After all, this is exactly the very action some of them had demanded from our authorities against sekolah tahfiz on account of Thaqif’s death.

Muslims and Christians display different responses

Please look back to Huckle’s dark saga. He took his young victims to Sunday morning church services!

Did Muslims ‘profiteer’ from his case to manipulate and taint public perception towards Christian charities?

Did Muslims jump into the fray and label Sunday schools or Christian volunteer work among impoverished and vulnerable children as exploitative and dangerous?

Did we call for Sunday schools or Christian charities to be closed down when Richard Huckle was charged?

If we did, we would be on more solid ground considering the many well-documented cases of child sex abuse in churches by clergymen over a long period of time.

Liberals need to be more open minded

This blanket attack by liberals on sekolah tahfiz is uncalled for. There is good in the religious school system even though Islamophobes appear too close-minded to see.

As with every other system, there will be weaknesses. But whatever shortcomings there are can certainly be repaired and improved. Bright students have emerged from sekolah tahfiz.

For example, two tahfiz students last month won gold medals at the World Mathematics Olympiad 2017 in Manilla, the Philippines.

Year Six student Jad Haris Sabaruddin (pix above) from Maahad Tahfiz Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub topped the Level 4 competition. Year Four pupil Najmi Asyraf Abdul Halim from Sekolah Kebangsaan Agama Datuk Haji Abdul Kadir Hasan came in first among Level 2 contestants.

And just last year, a trio of tahfiz students struck gold at the International Young Inventor Award 2016 in Surabaya, Indonesia.

The Fourth Formers – Muhammad Aliff Furqan Abdul Ghani, Muhammad Afiq Ikmal Mohd Yusof and Sofia Balqis Mohd Faisal – from Maahad Tahfiz Negeri Pahang created an innovative product of honeyed jelly high in anti-oxidants.

Some tahfiz students will go on to become scientists, doctors and productive professionals. We trust the others to look after the spiritual wellbeing of the ummah.

In conclusion, Muslims are positive about the role of religion in education. The negativity shown by liberals is born of ignorance and out of place in Muslim Malaysia.
