Russia's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest will not be able to take part after she was banned from entering the Ukraine becauseshe played a gig in Russian-occupied Crimea.

Ukraine is hosting this year's competition in May, having won last year but 27-year-old singer Yulia Samoylova, who is wheelchair-bound, has been refused entry because she performed in Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014.

Last year's victory by Jamala was seen as a major boost for war-torn Ukraine but this year's contest now looks like being at the centre of a major diplomat icincident.

The organisers of the Eurovision said today they were 'deeply disappointed' by Ukraine's decision.

The European Broadcasting Union said: 'We have to respect the local laws of the host country, however we are deeply disappointed in this decision as wefeel it goes against both the spirit of the contest, and the notion of inclusivity that lies at the heart of its values.'

Samoylova has toured in Crimea without entering through the de-facto border with theUkrainian mainland.

Under Ukrainian law that is considered illegal and the authorities in Kiev have therefore blocked her entry into Ukraine.

Ukrainian Security Service spokesman Olena Gitlanska said today they had banned Samoylova from the country for three years 'on the basis of information received about her violation of Ukrainian law.'

Samoylova,who has been confined to a wheelchair since childhood, sang at the opening ofthe 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

Last year Ukraine won with a song called 1944, which was considered highly controversial because of its lyrics about the deportation of Crimean Tartars by Stalin.

Jamala'sown great-grandmother was deported by the Soviet regime during World War II.

In the space of three days in May 1944, all 200,000 Tatars, who then made up a thirdof Crimea's population, were put on trains and shipped off to Central Asia uponStalin's orders, suspected of collaborating with the Nazis during their long occupation of the peninsula during the war.

Thousands died during the gruelling journey or starved to death in the barren steppes upon their arrival.

In the decades after the war, the Soviet Union developed Crimea as a naval base and a tourist destination, dominated by ethnic Russians along with Ukrainians.

It was not until the 1980s that the Tatars were allowed to return to their nativeland.

Jamala, whosereal name is Susana Jamaladinova, was born in the Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan in 1983 and now lives in Kiev.

The lyrics of her song did not mention Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and Jamala insisted it was not meant to refer to the recent history of the region.
