Lee Hsien Loong embarrassed by Vietnam’s silence when he declare solo on Trans-Pacific Partnership
written by admin March 24, 2017
Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was internationally embarrassed by his host Vietnam’s silence, who choose not to comment on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) while he made a declaration about going solo.
Despite having every one of the 10 members expressing disinterests in the TPP, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced that he will go solo on the TPP deal. The dictator prime minister of Singapore was speaking to the Singapore state media in Vietnam today (Mar 24), and declared that his single-party government will ratify the TPP, without the need for any parliamentary debate.
“The TPP, we are all watching how things will develop. Singapore is proceeding with the ratification, I think Vietnam has deferred their ratification but they are watching to see how the other partners play going forward, and what the Americans definitely will do.”
The United States has already shot down the TPP pact, with 10 other members expressing withdrawal. Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said there is no point continuing the TPP without the United States. The 10 other countries including communist Vietnam, except Singapore, face huge political opposition against the TPP and have scrapped the TPP plan.
Accompanying Lee Hsien Loong for the Vietnam trip were Minister for Trade and Industry, Lim Hng Kiang, and Minister of State Chan Chun Sing. Minister Lim Hng Kiang expressed his fervent support for Lee Hsien Loong:
“One option is for the remaining 11 members to negotiate bilateral deals, or the TPP11 could continue with the ratification process and hope that the US administration would change its mind and rejoin the deal. A third possibility was to follow on with a TPP11 without the US.”
However, neither has Lee Hsien Loong or Minister Lim Hng Kiang made any official proposal to any of the 11 countries out of fear of rejection.

Sementara itu, di ibu pertiwi, agak malu malu kucing gamaknya:
Malaysia remains open on TPPA, says Mustapa
Malaysia is still keeping its options open on the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) as 10 of its signatories met in Chile last week, said International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed.
“It is still an open question, there was a meeting held in Chile last week and another one coming up in May in Vietnam.
“We will continue to exchange views because the main motivation is to get access to the American market,” he told reporters at the Global Transformation Forum 2017 in Kuala Lumpur today. He was commenting on whether Malaysia was still keen to pursue the agreement after US President Donald Trump formally pulled the US out of massive 12-nation trade deal that covers 40 percent of the world’s economy.
In November last year, Mustapa had said that should the TPPA fail to materialise, Malaysia would explore other options, including negotiating bilateral free-trade agreements with other countries.
Malaysia will also be focusing on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which involves 10 Asean countries and six major trading partners in the Asia-Pacific region, including China, he said.

China’s Premier to Visit Australia and New Zealand for Trade Talks
By Girish Shetti | Mar 19, 2017 03:06 AM EDT
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang will visit Australia and New Zealand later this month. The weeklong visit that will focus mainly on trade and investment deals is the second high profile visit by a Chinese official since President Xi Jingping's visit to both countries in 2014.
Li would commence his visit between 22 March and 29 March, which would include halt at Canberra, Sydney and Auckland. The Chinese premier's trade visit to Australia and New Zealand comes during President Donald Trump's on-going trade protectionist campaign that led the U.S. withdrawal from the 12 nations Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA).
