Among all the countries in South-East Asia, Mercer’s 2017 Quality of Living ranks Kuala Lumpur as the second best city to live in for a quality living with a global ranking of 86 out of 231 cities surveyed., while Johor Bharu scored third place!

Not too shabby, Malaysia.

Based on 10 categories including political and social environment, economic environment, natural environment, housing, health services, education, and a city infrastructure ranking that assesses each city’s supply of electricity, drinking water, telephone and mail services, public transportation, traffic congestion and the range of international flights available from local airports; the Quality of Living survey looks at these areas to judge each country.

Surprisingly, our rival and neighbouring country Singapore managed with a global rank of 25 with other notable South-East Asian cities like Bangkok which ranked fourth in the region and 131 globally, Manilla ranked fifth place and 135 globally, as well as Jakarta in sixth place with a global rank of 143.

While other major cities in Asia including Hong Kong which ranked 71 globally, Seoul at 76th, Taipei at 85th, Shanghai at 102nd and Beijing at 119th.

With the gradual increment in the political and financial volatility areas in Europe, many of its cities offer the world's highest quality of living and remain attractive destinations for expanding business operations and sending expatriates on assignment.

For eight consecutive years, Vienna in Austria won the number one ranking globally while other European cities like Zurich ranked 2 globally, Munich at 4th, Dusseldorf at 6th, Geneva at 8th and Basel at 10th also secured top positions in the survey.

"Economic instability, social unrest, and growing political upheaval all add to the complex challenge multinational companies face when analysing quality of living for their expatriate workforce," said Mercer's Career business president and senior partner Ilya Bonic in a statement.

"For multinationals and governments it is vital to have quality of living information that is accurate, detailed, and reliable.

"It not only enables these employers to compensate employees appropriately, but it also provides a planning benchmark and insights into the often-sensitive operational environment that surrounds their workforce," he said.
