Football and flags: Why Celtic fans back the Palestinian cause

Scottish club's followers have always shown solidarity towards the dispossessed and oppressed

The flying of the Palestinian flag by Celtic fans in the European tie against Hapoel Beersheva last week has made headlines in newspapers and across social media. However, it is not a new phenomenon: Celtic fans fly Palestinian flags every week during games. Supporters have been showing solidarity with the people of Palestine for as long as I can remember: first it was badges, then it was kaffiyehs and now it's flags.

Hundreds of fans at a football match between Glasgow Celtic and Israeli side Hapoel Beer Sheva turned whole sections of the stadium into a sea of Palestinian flags in a protest against the Israeli occupation, ignoring an official ban on political demonstrations.
Before the start of the Champions League cup qualifier, activists from the group Palestine Alliance handed out flags and leaflets on the Nakba, or Catastrophe, the 1948 war that led to the creation of Israel and rendered millions of Palestinians refugees. Police outside Celtic Park warned fans against bringing flags into the stadium.
Celtic could face penalties from UEFA, Europe’s football governing body, for allowing the protests to go ahead, but some fans said they were prepared to pay any fine themselves to show their opposition to Israel's participation in the competition.

Lots more Celtic fans turning up with Palestine flags as the side take on Israeli side Hapoel Be'er Sheva tonight

I received an email the day after Celtic fans demonstrated to the world that they will not stand idly by whilst UEFA & FIFA display absolute hypocrisy with regard to its own policy on racism, by not only failing abysmally to oppose Apartheid racism – the worst manifestation of racism, but seeks to punish the football fans that endeavour to highlight that hypocrisy,  whilst UEFA even rewards the Apartheid racism they claim to oppose.
Celtic fans demonstrate the hypocrisy of UEFA with regard to UEFA own policy on racism which rewards Apartheid the worst manifestation of racism.  UEFA said Celtic had been charged for displays of an “illicit banner” and added: “This case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on 22 September.”
The email via a marvellous campaigner against the Israeli illegal and brutal occupation of Palestine and its Apartheid racism,   contained a message regarding football and the six Israeli football clubs that are situated in Palestinian land, and is calling on Tokyo Sexwale to sort the matter out.    There is not a single mention in the document of the massacre of 561 innocent Palestinian children killed whilst playing football or sleeping peacefully in their beds in the middle of the night.  Draw your own conclusions.
