TommyLawrenceThe swinging sixties saw the city of Liverpool buzzing to the sound of the Beatles. On the pitch Bill Shankly was shaping Liverpool into one of the most feared teams in Europe. In his goal, was a Scotsman called Tommy Lawrence.
The 'Flying Pig', as he was affectionately known due to his slightly overweight build, was born on 14th May 1940. He joined Liverpool as a 17 year old, but had to wait five years to get his first team chance.
For the next 8 years, Lawrence made the goalkeeping jersey his own. A string of fine performances helped Shankly's reds side to two League titles and the club's first FA Cup triumph. His bravery made him a huge favourite on the Kop.
A shock FA Cup defeat in 1970 sent shockwaves through the Liverpool side, as manager Shankly took the loss as a sign that things needed changing. Lawrence was amongst the casualties, replaced by young keeper Ray Clemence. He went on to make only one more appearance in the reds goal, before leaving for Tranmere Rovers.
In all, Lawrence played 306 times for Liverpool.

LFC's Greatest Ever Goalkeeper
RAY CLEMENCE
RayClemenceHaving been too young for the glory years of the 1970's and early 80's, my knowledge of that era comes from reading and watching TV footage. The sides were full of attacking talent with the likes of Keegan, Toshack, Heighway, Souness and Dalglish. But just as impressive was Liverpool's defensive unit, none more so than outstanding goalkeeper Ray Clemence.
Signed from Scun thorpe United at the age of 18, Clemence learnt his trade in the reserves, with an appearance in a League Cup tie against Swansea, his only first team action of the 60's.
His league debut came in January 1970, with the next coming a month later after Tommy Lawrence was dropped following an Fa Cup defeat to second division Watford. Once in the Number 1 jersey, Clemence didn't let go, missing only 6 league games in the next eleven seasons.
Agile, quick, with ultra-safe hands and tremendous positional sense, Clemence was a key component to the all-conquering Liverpool side of the 1970's. Vital saves at key points of matches helped the trophies roll in. Five Championships, 1 FA Cup,1 League Cup, 5 Charity Shields, 3 European Cups, 2 UEFA Cup's and 1 European Super Cup were all won.
Sixty-one England international caps were gained, although the number would have been higher had it not been for the role being shared with Peter Shilton.
1978-79 saw arguably Clemence's finest season as he and his defence conceded only 16 goals in 42 league matches. 28 clean sheets were acquired, with only 4 goals conceded in 21 games at Anfield!
Two years later, Clemence bowed out in perfect style, keeping a clean sheet as Liverpool won their 3rd European Cup in Paris against Real Madrid.
Wanting a new challenge, Clemence moved on to Tottenham Hotspur. When he returned to Anfield with his new club, the whole Kop clapped as Clemence made his way to the goal.
In all, his Liverpool career spanned 14 years. In 665 appearances, he kept a remarkable 325 clean sheets. It is a record which is unlikely to be bettered.
