Bruce: We'll try our hardest
Wigan boss Steve Bruce has promised his side will give it their best shot to try and beat Manchester United.
With little to play for, Wigan - under the command of former United skipper Bruce - could be forgiven for not bothering to pull out all the stops to halt the progress of Sir Alex Ferguson's men.
Liverpool are waiting in growing frustration to know whether there is still a title to challenge for when they play next at West Brom on Sunday.
It could be all over by then if United take four points from the Wigan match and Saturday's home game with Arsenal.
But Bruce is refusing to even consider such an approach, despite the fact his chairman Dave Whelan remarkably predicted today the Geordie-born boss could be the manager-in-waiting to take over from Ferguson one day.
Bruce's side have taken just one point from the last 15, but he said: "It could have been a great season. But with three games left maybe this match is something that will bring the best out of us.
"But there is an honesty about the Premier League. People will give everything, the honesty of the league demands that.
"We are expected to put on a performance. We did last season at this same time against United when they won the title here. But we should have had a penalty, a blatant one from Rio (Ferdinand), and that could have made all the difference.
"But we gave them a hell of a game then and we will do the same this time.
"Against the big boys, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, here we have given them a run for their money and I hope we can match the standards we have set for ourselves."
He added: "Dave Whelan has a soft spot for United, but like me he is competitive and he will want his team to put on a good show.
"Whether will be good enough on the night I don't know. But we will be well prepared and have a right good crack at them.
"That is what the Premier League deserves. That honesty. We will have to be right at our best to even be compared with United.
"We have been a bit sloppy recently, so we do not want this season to tail off.
"We can still get to our best-ever position and points total. It is still possible.
"It is a great opportunity. We can finish above tenth and that is still our aim."
Bruce will almost certainly be without goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, with a back injury, and has Ghana international Richard Kingson standing-by to take over. And there is also a doubt over defender Paul Scharner, who has an ankle problem.
But Bruce was faintly embarrassed by Whelan's claims when the Wigan chairman said: "Steve has worked and played under Sir Alex. He has studied him and learned a lot from him.
"When Sir Alex does retire we will lose a great manager. When he does decide to do that, and I hope it won't be for a few more years, Steve has got to be in the running to take over from him.
"I would hate to lose him, he has been wonderful for us. But if the opportunity comes along to manage Manchester United, the whole world would jump at that.
"United want certain qualities, and Steve has them all. I would be happy in the end to lose him to Manchester United.
"What Sir Alex has done is amazing. He is going to win the league again and maybe the European Cup too. He has set records that will be almost impossible to beat."
Bruce's reaction to that was clear. "Sir Alex will look at the fact that he has put together another very good young team, so why should he walk away.
"It is something I have never really thought about although it is flattering to hear my chairman saying things like that about me.
"I have great memories of the club and still look for their results, I must do after playing their for 10 years. But managing there is a long way off.
"But coming into management you want to be in the Premier League, but us English ones have to start off the hard way.
"You learn your trade and try to do better. You always want to go to the top, and Manchester United are right at the top.
"We all strive for it but there are probably a few people around better qualified than me.
"But I have only been here 18 months. I have enjoyed my time here - not the last couple of months though - because the hard work we have put in has unravelled a bit."

Reserves: Bolton 0 United 1
United's Reserves retained the Manchester Senior Cup after Zoran Tosic's early goal proved enough to overcome Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium.
The Serbian struck his first Reds goal since arriving in January after eight minutes, as his heavily deflected free-kick wrong-footed Trotters goalkeeper Adam Bogdan.
United peppered the hosts' goal with shots on goal, with only inspired goalkeeping from Bogdan keeping the difference down to a single goal. That precarious advantage meant Bolton were always in the tie, however, and Ben Amos was required to make two fine saves himself midway through the second period.
The Reds' intent to attack was signalled by a line-up which contained Kiko Macheda, Danny Welbeck, Lee Martin and Tosic as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Warren Joyce sought to secure the second trophy of their spell in charge.
The early exchanges belonged to United, who immediately put the hosts under pressure. When Tosic struck from 20 yards, albeit via a sizeable deflection off the wall, it had been coming. Two minutes later, Macheda headed Martin's free-kick over from six yards.
From there, Bogdan took centre stage. First he superbly finger-tipped a low Tosic effort wide, then fielded a powerful close-range effort from Martin before Macheda and Eckersley both fired narrowly off target.
Martin seemed to have doubled United's advantage on 35 minutes as he raced onto Macheda's pass and slotted through Bogdan's legs, only for a late and slightly harsh offside flag to keep the scoreline intact.
Another deflected Tosic effort dribbled just wide the post as United ended the first half on top, and the game continued in the same vein after the break as Bolton struggled to cope with the Reds' passing and ball retention.
Tosic twice drew solid saves from Bogdan as a second goal seemed inevitable, but Bolton served belated notice of their threat in drawing two superb saves from Reds goalkeeper Amos around the hour mark.
First Tope Obadeyi burst into the United area and only Amos' fingertips prevented the striker's shot from nestling in the bottom corner, but even better was the England youth international's superb reaction to turn Aaron Mooy's free-kick round the post.
Those scares provoked a flurry of United half-chances, as Macheda, Welbeck and Danny Drinkwater all fired narrowly off-target, and only another superb save from Bogdan prevented substitute Magnus Eikrem from putting deserved gloss on the scoreline in the final minute.
One goal was enough, however, and it was fitting that the impressive Tosic should seal a second trophy of the campaign for the Reds' Reserves. Next season will begin with the chance of another - the Lancashire Senior Cup final in August, in which Bolton will again provide the opposition.
United: Amos; Eckersley, C Evans, De Laet, James; Tosic (Stewart, 87), Drinkwater (Eikrem, 87), Possebon, Martin; Welbeck (Gill, 74), Macheda.
Subs not used: Devlin, Dudgeon. |

THERE have been some memorable games at Parkside Road this season but few have topped Kendal Town抯 7-2 defeat to a Manchester United XI for sheer entertainment value.
A late surge from Town saw Paul Byrne and Alex Taylor bag a thoroughly deserved brace for Town to dent United抯 seven goal advantage and give the bumper crowd reason to celebrate.

another teves story
By IAN McGARRY - The Inside View
13th May 2009
CARLOS TEVEZ can sign for Manchester United today if he wants.
There would be no transfer fee because he is not registered with another club.
There would be no negotiations as long as he is happy with his personal terms.
All it needs is the player, a contract and the agreement of the club and it抯 done.
United could even try to get out of paying the agent抯 commission, though it抯 almost certain they would find themselves with a legal rowin court.
If Tevez were willing to break his contract with MSI |

MANCHESTER UNITED could try to sign Carlos Tevez on a Bosman-style free transfer.
SunSport understands the Red Devils are exploring whether there are legal loopholes in the striker抯 contract.
In particular, the third party ownership agreement which ties Tevez with the investment company MSI is under scrutiny.
Leading sports lawyers are looking at whether the ownership of Tevez抯 registration by MSI could be challenged under the same terms as Jean Marc Bosman took on the old transfer system.
Tevez is currently on loan at United and is a free agent when that dealn expires next month. His advisor Kia Joorabchian says MSI are demanding a fee of |
