Kamenashi to star in "Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge" drama
The live-action drama adaptation of Tomoko Hayakawa's manga "Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge" was confirmed on Sunday. KAT-TUN's Kazuya Kamenashi (23) will play the lead role and will be joined by Hiroki Uchi (23) and NEWS member Yuya Tegoshi (22).
The comedic story revolves a group of handsome young men who are offered free lodging if they can turn the owner's niece into a proper lady. Kamenashi plays the short-tempered Kyohei Takano, while Uchi and Tegoshi play two of his housemates. Aya Omasa (18) has been cast as the niece Sunako, a solitary girl with low self-esteem. As the men work together to change Sunako, she and Kyohei begin to form a romantic relationship.
The cast also includes ballet dancer Shuntaro Miyao (25). TBS will premiere the series on January 15, airing every Friday at 10:00pm.
Blessed Are They Who See Beautiful Things in Humble Places
Rounding off this whistlestop tour of capital festivals is Joji Matsuoka's Snow Prince, which is showing in the 5th London Children's Film Festival at the Barbican. Adapted by Kundo Koyama (who scripted Youjirou Takita's Oscar-winning Departures - more of which next week), this deeply moving drama relocates Ouida's much-loved 1872 novel, The Dog of Flanders, to Japan in the mid-1930s. A treat for children of all ages, this is simply one of the most beautiful films of the year.
Much of the action is presented as a flashback after elderly Keiko Kishi receives a manuscript from a stranger. The text takes her back to her adolescence (Marino Kuwajima) when she defied strict father Teruyuki Kagawa to play with budding artist Shintaro Morimoto, who lives in extreme poverty with his grandfather, Katsuo Nakamura. One day, while they're sheltering in the watermill from the biting wind, the children find an abandoned puppy and Chibi becomes Morimoto's inseparable pal. But the well-heeled Kagawa heartily disapproves of Kuwajima wasting her time with an urchin and his dog and demands that she devotes herself to her studies and piano practice.
Moreover, he keeps inviting polite boys from her school to the house and Morimoto's growing sense of worthlessness is compounded when he loses all his money to a pickpocket after Nakamura entrusts him with an errand. But Kuwajima's mother, Rei Dan, recognises the importance of Morimoto's friendship and she allows her daughter to slip away for clandestine rendez-vous, one of which culminates in the pair going behind the scenes at a travelling circus and meeting clown Tadanobu Asano.
Morimoto is unaware that Asano is his long-lost father. But he hero worships him nonetheless and together they collect some lakeside mud that Nakamura mixes into a rich blue paint. However, the circus departs and the old man dies soon afterwards, leaving the distraught Morimoto to spend the festive season on the street. He helps put out a fire at Kagawa's warehouse, but the night will still end in tragedy.
Everything about Matsuoka's poignant picture is exquisite. The photography and period design are impeccable, while Koyama's script deftly contrasts the humble humanity of the underclasses with the stiff respectability of the militarist era. Morimoto and Kuwajima also excel, as they eschew pathos for a heartfelt naturalism that ensures this is nostalgic but never sentimental, touching but never trite. Dauntlessly acquainting younger viewers with the good that can still emerge from the harsher realities of life, this is the kind of family entertainment that Hollywood has forgotten how to make.

KAT-TUN Kamenashi to Appear in Drama 'Yamatonadeshiko Shichihenge'!
KAT-TUN member Kamenashi Kazuya will appear as the lead actor in the drama series 'ヤマトナデシコ七変化 / Yamatonadeshiko Shichihenge (The Wallflower)' to be broadcast from January 15th. The drama is an adaptation of a popular 'shojo' manga [mainly targeting female readers] with the same title that has sold a total of 7.5 million copies. It is a romantic comedy about 5 unrelated characters that have to live under the same roof. One of the main characters is Takano Kyohei (Kamenashi), who because of his good looks attracts too much unwanted attention. As a result, Kyohei becomes edgy around people he isn't well acquainted with. The heroine is Nakahara Sunako (Omasa Aya), who had been traumatized by being told she looked unattractive. Ever since then, Sunako has grown to view things negatively and has also become an avid fan of horror. The other three handsome boys who live with the two characters will be played by NEWS member Tegoshi Yuya, [Johnny's Jr.] Uchi Hiroki and ballet dancer Miyao Shuntaro.
The filming is scheduled to start in early December, and Kamenashi seemed quite confident about acting as part of the 'formidable foursome' [the aforementioned four actors]. "I think the four of us have vast potential. If we enjoy the filming, something positive will come out." He pledged he will put to use the experience accumulated from his 10 year career as a celebrity. He also seemed very enthusiastic about tackling his unusual role. "The character is a unique person, so while doing my best I'll be careful not to let my personal traits come to the fore." It will be interesting to watch how the 'overly' good-looking Kamenashi portrays an 'overly' good-looking character. 'Kyohei' is markedly different from any other roles Kamenashi has played, so fans are looking forward to seeing a whole new Kamenashi!
Hey! Say! JUMP Morimoto's Pet Dog Appears in Movie!
Hey! Say! JUMP member Morimoto Ryutaro reported about recent developments to his fans!
"Yahoo! A while ago Mother and I washed our pet dog 'Chi' with shampoo♪ Since our dog's a bit large, it's pretty hard work! ...But we were able to make Chi's body 'beautiful', and I was able to lend a helping hand to my mom. So I guess it all paid off! Good boy Ryutaro! (laugh)
Speaking of our dog...Chi appears in the upcoming film 'Snow Prince Kinjirareta Koi no Melody [lit. 'Snow Prince Melody of Forbidden Love']' to premiere on December 12th! Please go and check it out! I just had to do some advertising for my little brother. (laugh) Chi was just a puppy when they filmed the movie, but now Chi's all grownup♪
Oh, recently I bought a computer! I'm still a beginner so I'll ask computer experts Dai-chan [Arioka Daiki] and Hikaru-kun [Yaotome Hikaru] for help!"
The brother Ryutaro talked about is Johnny's Jr. member Morimoto Shintaro, who is the lead actor in 'Snow Prince Kinjirareta Koi no Melody'. The dog that appears in the film is actually owned by the Morimoto brothers! Fans will be able to see the close bond shared by Chi and Shintaro in the movie. It is also charming to imagine Ryutaro and his mother applying shampoo to their favorite pet!
Yara seems insecure and says “Don’t I just look awkward in cute settings like this? (laughs).
