The International Drama Festival in Tokyo has announced the awards for its fourth edition to be held Oct. 25-28 during the Tokyo Film Festival.

The winner of the best actor in Asia prize is Korean megastar Lee Byung Hun for his performance in the drama, "IRIS." The prize, established in 2008, is given to a non-Japanese thespian for an outstanding turn in an Asian drama.

Winner of the Asia Award for the Japanese drama with most export potential as determined by Asian buyers goes to the Tokyo Broadcasting System drama, "Jin."

The Tokyo Drama Award for the local drama with most marketability outside Japan, as decided by exporters, has yet to be announced.

Lee named best actor at Tokyo Drama Awards
By Han Sang-hee (sanghee@koreatimes.co.kr}

Korean actor Lee Byung-hun will be named the Best Actor in Asia at the Tokyo Drama Awards, according to his agency BH Entertainment, Wednesday.

The 40-year-actor has become the first to win the award, which was set up for the event this year. The drama "IRIS", which starred Lee and fellow actress Kim Tae-hee, will also receive the Best Foreign Drama award at the annual event.

"The Best Actor in Asia award was made to celebrate an actor’s outstanding performance and contribution, who appeared in a foreign work," the Tokyo Drama Awards organizing committee said. "Lee was appreciated for not only his acting in the drama 'IRIS,' but also for the fact that the series has received acclaim from countries that aired the show," the committee added.

Lee has had a wild ride for the couple of past years, enjoying paise and support from both fans and the entertainment and film industry. The actor appeared in the hit drama "IRIS" and also worked with Hollywood stars Sienna Miller, Channing Tatum and Dennis Quaid for the blockbuster film "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" last year. He also won Best Actor in a Hallyu Drama category at the Seoul Drama Awards in September.

Lee will attend the ceremony to receive the award on Oct. 25.

Drama "IRIS" & Starring Actor Lee Byung-hun Win Tokyo Drama Awards
Source: KBS Global

According to Taewon Entertainment on October 14th, the popular drama "IRIS" will be receiving the Foreign Project Special Award at the Tokyo Drama Awards on the 25th . The Tokyo Drama Awards is a part of the Tokyo Drama Festival and awards notable works selected from all the dramas aired on Japanese television.

As if one award wasn't enough for the staff behind the hit series to smile smugly about, starring actor Lee Byung-hun is set to also be awarded the Best Actor In Asia award.

That's quite a title for any actor to carry, but officials from the awards show expressed that Lee is indeed worthy of it. They said, "When selecting the winner for this [Best Actor In Asia] award, of course we took into consideration Lee Byung-hun's outstanding acting, but in addition to that, there was also the factor that "IRIS" is being exported and broadcast in countries all over the world, receiving lots of support from viewers."

Song Wan-mo is the CEO of Artist View -- the company in charge of the marketing of "IRIS" in Japan -- and he said that it's unprecedented for a Korean drama series like "IRIS" to walk away with two big awards from the Tokyo Drama Awards. Song added that "IRIS" will really help establish Korea's position in the Japanese entertainment industry.

Song used the word "unprecedented" which seems to be linked with the hit drama a lot. It was recently announced that "IRIS" attracted 10.1% of TV viewers in Japan with its first episode. For a Korean drama to be shown during primetime Japanese television in and of itself was unprecedented, but to have such relatively high ratings? Quite the notable feat.

It should be noted though that this isn't the first time a Korean project has walked away with a Tokyo Drama Award. The 2008 drama "Gold Bride" and "Beethoven's Virus" from 2009 both each won an award.

Korean TV series "IRIS" will be receiving a special honor at a drama awards festival in Japan this month.

The show's producer Taewon Entertainment announced in a press release that "IRIS," which recorded viewership ratings of 10.1 percent for its premiere episode in Japan, will be honored with the foreign project award at the Tokyo Drama Awards 2010 to be held at the Meiji Memorial Hall on October 25.

Taewon also explained that Korean actor Lee Byung-hun, who played the male lead on the show, will be named as "Best Actor in Asia" at the ceremony.

"Lee's acting skills are incredible and 'IRIS' has been distributed to numerous countries worldwide. Not only did the show post high ratings but Lee has received favorable reviews as well," an official from the event was quoted as saying.

"IRIS," which aired in Korea from October 2009 to December 2009, starred several of the biggest names in the entertainment industry including Lee Byung-hun, Kim Tae-hee, Jung Joon-ho, Kim So-yeon and Big Bang member TOP

The action-packed espionage series dominated the primetime lineup during its run, scoring viewership ratings of nearly 40 percent.

The CEO of Taewon Entertainment and Lee Byung-hun will be in Japan to attend the Tokyo Drama Awards at the end of this month.

SITGES 2010: I SAW THE DEVIL REVIEW
by Kurt Halfyard twitchfilm.net

[Thanks to Guillem Rosset for the following review.]

Korean director Kim Jee-woon has build quite an impressive filmography. Films like A Tale of Two Sisters, A Bittersweet Life or The Good, The Bad, And The Weird achieved international success and gathered him a lot of fans and well deserved attention. Kim Jee-woon has also jumped from genre to genre, and so this time he's decided to tackle the thriller with I Saw The Devil, a powerful vengeance story.

Kyung-chul (Choi Min-sik) is a dangerous psychopath who kills for pleasure. His latest victim is a young beautiful woman who happens to be the daughter of a retired police chief and the fiancé of Soo-hyun (Lee Byung-hun), a top secret agent. So Soo-hyun, with the help of his fiancé's father, decides to track down the murderer himself and vows to do whatever necessary to take vengeance against Kyung-chul, even if he must become a monster himself to achieve it. The film spends little time in the process of Soo-hyun finding the killer, this is not a movie about the good guy tracking down the bad guy. It's a film about revenge, and so it spends most of its running time in the process of executing it and its consequences.

Let me put this straight: this is one of the best thrillers that I've seen in a long time. Given its premise, some people might despise the film as being too reminiscent of Park Chan-wook's vengeance trilogy. Yes, there are certainly some similarities, but the film does stand on its own by its own merits. And having two of the most talented actors of Korean cinema certainly helps. Choi Min-sik makes his return to the big screen after five years of inactivity creating a very powerful character, an unpredictable serial killer with no motives and that doesn't know the feeling of pain. Lee Byung-hun begins as the calculating agent who keeps everything under control, but as the film progresses we witness his descent into the darkness as he keeps pushing the boundaries of how far he's willing to go for the sake of revenge.

The film is also wonderful from a technical standpoint. Kim Jee-woon creates a dark and gripping world thanks to a great production design, and makes very good of it with superb camera work and some truly astonishing sequences (for instance, there's a fight between three people inside a running car that's brilliant). It's a film that only keeps growing throughout its running time, and this is really something for a 141 minutes long film. It's also a very explicit movie. The violence in it is very painful and realistic (in fact, there are some scenes that had been censored in Korea, though in Sitges we were able to see the uncut version) and there's a couple of scenes that could make you grind your teeth. It's a very powerful movie, with strong visuals and a compelling script capable of raising serious questions about the subject.

It's a shame that the film was screened outside competition in Sitges, because this one was probably one the best movies of this year's festival. It sure is one convincing proof that Korean cinema is still amongst the best cinematographies in the world, and a film that firmly establishes Kim Jee-woon as one of its most interesting and gifted filmmakers.

TOKYO, Oct. 25 (AP) - (Kyodo)—South Korean actor Lee Byung Hun, who played the protagonist role in the 2009 South Korean espionage television drama series "IRIS," was given the "Best Actor in Asia" award Monday on the opening day of the four-day International Drama Festival in Tokyo.

Japanese actress Keiko Kishi, who headed the selecting committee, handed the award to Lee at a ceremony in Tokyo.

Lee said, "I have found it really fortunate that I am living as an actor in this age."

Lee was selected for the award as he has "shown exceptional acting talent in a non-Japanese Asian drama," according to a statement issued earlier by the executive committee of the festival, organized by the National Association of Commercial Broadcasters in Japan and Japan Broadcasting Corp., the public broadcaster known as NHK.

"IRIS," a drama series produced by South Korea's largest television network Korean Broadcasting System, was broadcast in Japan this year after it attained huge popularity in South Korea last year.

The 40-year-old actor was named the "Best Actor in Asia" at the Tokyo Drama Awards 2010 held at the Meiji Memorial Hall on October 25.

He recently starred in the Korean thriller "I Saw the Devil" with actor Choi Min-sik, which has been sold to various countries such as France, England, Taiwan, Turkey and North America.
