Despite his ageing legs and waning influence, Paul Scholes is still a man for the big occasion and his strike in the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona is surely one of the best of many he has scored in a Manchester United shirt.
Whilst the circumstances and significance of the goal may have nudged Scholes towards top spot, he is indeed a worthy winner of the TEAMtalk Soccers Goal of the Season.
With 13 minutes gone at Old Trafford and no obvious sign of a breakthrough in the tie for either side, Gianluca Zambrotta's sloppy clearance fell to the feet of the 33-year-old.
Strangely for Scholes, his first touch wasn't perfect. In receiving with the instep, the ball bobbled up slightly and less gifted players (into which bracket falls every player to have played in the Premier League over the past fifteen years, bar a very select few) might have taken a second touch to rectify the problem. By then however, the on-rushing Carles Puyol would have closed down the shooting opportunity.
Scholes instead adjusted his feet and shifted his weight to give himself the perfect amount of backlift before striking sweetly across the ball on the half-volley.
Victor Valdes flung himself across his goal but the Barca keeper was reduced to a mere spectator by the quality of the strike as the ball flew into the top corner.
Special games are rarely settled by special goals but this one certainly was. United repelled everything Barca could throw at them and went onto Moscow where, nine years after missing out in the Nou Camp, Scholes finally picked up that Champions League winners medal.
In second place comes Fernando Torres. Many think the of Spaniard's first goal in a Liverpool shirt as his best in an outstanding debut season in the Premier League.
Against Jose Mourinho's men, he picked up Steven Gerrard's wonderful pass before ghosting past Tal Ben Haim and finding the only spot Petr Cech was offering him. Great goal, but his strike against Marseille was better.
The Stade Velodrome is not an easy place to go but Liverpool had no choice; Win or they were out of the Champions League. Gerrard had given the Reds an early lead before Torres collected Harry Kewell's pass on the left corner of the OM box.
Despite Torres' standing start, the first defender was beaten by the Spaniard's first touch before the second opponent was made to look ridiculous by a wonderful dummy and change of direction. The third and fourth defenders could get nowhere near close enough to make a challenge before they saw Torres effortlessly roll the ball into the corner.
El Nino's supreme acceleration and balance made what was a wonderful goal look ridiculously simple.
In third place comes the world's best footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo. Like the previous incumbent of the number seven shirt at Old Trafford, the Portuguese flier has devised and perfected a whole new way to strike a dead ball. However it remains to be seen whether he will ever hit a free-kick better than the one he pinged past Portsmouth keeper David James at Old Trafford in January.
Having already put United in the lead three minutes earlier, Ronaldo lined up the set-piece just right of centre, a touch over 25-yards from goal.
James would have been forgiven for feeling a sense of deja vu after he was left helpless by a Ronaldo free-kick at the same end the previous season, but if the England number one knew what was coming, it certainly didn't help him. The 23-year-old punched the ball over the wall and into the top corner with James stationary.
Getting a ball 'up and down' beyond a wall, especially when within such proximity of the goal, generally means increasing spin and sacrificing power. Ronaldo did neither.
The name of Peter Whittingham is rarely found in the same company as Scholes, Torres and Ronaldo but his opener for Cardiff in the FA Cup fifth round tie against Middlesbrough was worthy of a world-class international, not an Aston Villa cast-off. And for that reason, the midfielder has earned a highly creditable fourth place finish.
Early on at The Riverside, Whittingham gathered a loose ball on the edge of the Boro box after the home side had failed to clear a Bluebirds set-piece. The 23-year-old took two players out of the equation with his first two touches in the most crowded of penalty areas. Three more red shirts confronted the former England Under-21 international but with quick feet and close control, Whittingham engineered enough space to curl a beautiful right-footed effort past the stranded Mark Schwarzer and into the top corner of the Aussie's net.
The Bluebirds went on to get a second soon after and woeful Boro were sent packing by their Championship opponents, who went all the way to Wembley.
Stiliyan Petrov might consider himself a little unlucky to make only fifth place with his strike in the 6-0 demolition of Derby at Pride Park in April.
Roy Carroll had already endured a shocking first-half having being culpable for the Villans' opening two goals, and the former Manchester United keeper failed to cover himself in glory again when his weak clearance reached only as far as Petrov on the arc of the centre circle in the Rams' half.
There appeared to be no immediate danger but Petrov had other ideas. The Bulgarian pulled the ball down on his chest with his first touch and on the second bounce, lashed a wonderful half-volley back from where it came, over the head of the stranded Irish keeper who could only watch as the ball sailed into the top corner.
It may be a clich |

Manchester City have confirmed the appointment of Blackburn boss Mark Hughes as Sven-Goran Eriksson's replacement at Eastlands.
City parted company with Eriksson on Monday and were immediately given permission to talk to Hughes, 44, with a compensation package agreed on Tuesday.
Hughes was also believed to be interesting Chelsea after a successful four years at Rovers but has opted to move to Eastlands on a three-year deal.
City's new chief executive, Garry Cook, told the club's official website: "I am delighted to welcome Mark on board. In our view he is the brightest young manager in the game and he was our number one target for the manager's job."
Hughes, who will be presented to the media at a press conference on Thursday morning, agreed to the move after meeting Cook on Tuesday evening.
Cook himself has only just had his appointment confirmed by owner Thaksin Shinawatra and flew in from the USA to seal the deal.
Cook continued: "He made it clear to us from the moment we met that he shared our vision and ambition to make Manchester City one of the top sides in the country.
"It's a privilege to join Dr Thaksin here at Manchester City. There is no better opportunity in world football.
"The club intends to invest in new players as well as securing the long-term services of key members of the current first-team squad.
"Mark has already identified some of the players and backroom staff that he wants to see here at City, and we will begin the process of recruiting them immediately."
Hughes will take up his new position with immediate effect.

dah Barca pulak nak masuk meminang.....
REAL MADRID president Ramon Calderon finally appears to have conceded defeat in his battle to land Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United.
He declared: 揜onaldo is an impossible signing. His club don抰 want to sell him.
揥e can do nothing if the club that owns him don抰 want to sell. We never approach a player under contract. This is not Real Madrid policy and especially not with a club with whom we are such good friends. |
