Good ol' Johnny is finally catching up with the times

Johnny's Entertainment is known for having used strict upholding of laws relating to copyright and right to use of one's own image to strictly ban images and photographs of its idols from the internet. Banned on the firm's official website as a matter of course, their images are banned from news sites - not even the covers of magazines featuring a Johnny's artist can be shown. Furthermore, on any drama's official website, only the actor from Johnny's is missing, represented by a silhouette or illustration. Alternatively, an artificially rendered image of the idol can be given and used in that way.

However, this appears to be in the process of changing dramatically.

"The website of Sakurai Sho (Arashi)'s new drama, Toujou Kabachi! (TBS), originally had, in typical Johnny's style, Sho's image rendered as an illustrating. However, on the 15th of January, it suddenly changed into a normal photograph, just like the rest of the cast. Also, the images of Yamashita Tomohisa of 'Code Blue -2nd Season-' (Fuji TV) and Kamenashi Kazuya, Uchi Hiroki and Tegoshi Yuya of 'Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge' (TBS) have all become clear photographs. Because of this change in circumstance, it can surely be assumed that the images of the talents are now allowed to be used on drama websites." (Reporter specialising in Johnny's Entertainment)

Up until now, Johnny's Entertainment has said that the reason for the ban has been to uphold 'copyright and rights to use of image' laws. However, whenever Johnny's artists have done commercials, their images have been shown clearly on the client's website. Furthermore, any movie with the right amount of money or sponsoring behind it has been able to show clear images of the Johnny's actors on its site. It's true that this just cause has very large inconsistencies.

"Regarding the approval given to NHK's Kouhaku Uta Gassen last year, Johnny's Entertainment explained that, 'We are taking into account multiple factors - the modern diversification of media, the advancement in security on the internet and the rising public awareness of copyright and image laws'. This change of attitude has probably also led to the allowance on drama sites. Essentially, it has resulted in a 'lifting of the net ban'." (Same reporter as above)

Incidentally, the sites with the photographs of the idols have had security improved on their websites so that the images cannot be copied.

This change in Johnny's Entertainment - a loss or a compromise? At any rate, it's no mistake that the company is, if belatedly, finally catching up with the times.

Yoshitaka joins Ninomiya, Matsuyama in "Gantz"

Last October, it was revealed that Hiroya Oku's sci-fi manga "GANTZ" is being adapted as two live-action films, starring Kazunari Ninomiya (26) and Kenichi Matsuyama (24). It has now been announced that actress Yuriko Yoshitaka (21) is taking on the heroine role.

The story revolves around two young men named Kei Kurono (Ninomiya) and Masaru Kato (Matsuyama) who should have died in a train accident, but a mysterious entity known as GANTZ brings them back to life and sends them on missions to hunt down alien beings.

Yoshitaka will play the role of Tae Kojima, Kurono's classmate at university. A pure romance develops between the two characters, contrasting with the brutal violence that Kurono and Kato engage in for their missions under GANTZ. Yoshitaka will also participate in some action scenes (including wire-action).

Both of the "GANTZ" movies are scheduled for 2011.

SP : Okada Jun'ichi's popular drama to become Kaneshiro Kazuki manga serial in Spirits

The drama in which popular idol group V6's Okada Jun'ichi starred from Nov 07 to Jan 08, 'SP: Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department - Security Bureau - 4th District Security Division' (Fuji TV), is to be serialised as a manga starting on the 1st of February in the 9th issue of Big Comic Spirits (Shougakukan). This was announced in the 8th issue released on the 25th. The story is to be penned by the drama's original screenwriter, Naoki Award winning Kaneshiro Kazuki, with art by Haibara Yaku, whose works include 'BASARA - belligerent country'. It is said that the manga will be an accompaniment to the original drama.

SP tells the story of Security Bureau officer Inoue Kaoru (Okada), who has the ability to remember anything he sees in a single glance (photographic memory), has the unique ability of using tracking to follow footprints, etc, as well as having full control of his own body by use of martial arts (including empty handed styles). With this ability, he protects important figures such as the Prime Minister as well as fighting terrorists. As well as an 11 episode series, a two hour ten minute special, 'Special Encore', was broadcast in April 08.

This autumn there are plans to release a movie based on the SP drama, with Bayside Shakedown's Motohiro Katsuyuki as chief director and Hatano Takafumi as director, both of whom were also involved in the drama series. The film will also star the cast of the series, including Okada and Tsutsumi Shin'ichi, Maki Youko, Matsuo Satoru and Kamio Yu, as well as Kagawa Teruyuki.

Arashi's Ninomiya and Mizukawa Asami on nabe date?

Member of popular Johnny's group Arashi, Ninomiya Kazunari (26) and actress Mizukawa Asami are said to have visited metropolitan nabe bar Hormone, in Dogenzaka, Shibuya together.

In around the first week of the month at around 7pm, apparently Ninomiya rushed into the restaurant saying, 'in here, in here'. Mizukawa and Nagasawa Masami are known to be close friends, and Ninomiya is rumoured to be in a relationship with Nagasawa. However, a source has said that the two were together on a 'nabe date' - without Nagasawa:

"We heard someone making a toast and what sounded like a great time, and I thought, 'No way!' but it was true - 'That high pitched voice - it sounds like Ninomiya, like he was in a movie or drama! So, is he with an actress? Maybe it's the actress he's supposed to be dating, Nagasawa Masami?', and when I looked, I saw him next to a girl - I was really surprised. It was Mizukawa Asami.' (Fellow Customer)

Ninomiya and Mizukawa have known one another for ten years.

"Ninomiya had heard from a friend about a place that did great nabe and invited Mizukawa to check it out with him - that seems to be what's happened." (Authorised source - TV channel)

"Mizukawa was quietly dividing up the ingredients and recommending drinks. There were times when they were looking into one another's eyes and seemed deep in conversation, and there was a good vibe about them. You would think they were just like a couple! From start to finish they had been smiling and laughing as they talked, but at the end Ninomiya's face became serious, and he seemed troubled as he talked to Mizukawa about something. I wonder if they were talking about Nagasawa..." (Fellow Customer)

They were together until late at night - then left after five hours at about midnight. They seemed to have a harmonious relationship as they disappeared down Dogenzaka together. Also, they were caught behaving very suggestively with one another.

Ninomiya has, up until now, been living alone in Meguro, Tokyo in a one bedroom apartment, but a fellow resident has said, "When I pass by him in the entrance hall, he's the sort of person who will expressly stop to say hello to you. But one day, he got into the elevator with Mizukawa Asami while I was in it - and unlike before, I got the feeling it was a very bad time to talk to him."

We were told he was dating Nagasawa, so I'm wondering just what's going on here. Well, Ms Nagasawa, when the cat's away...

After a successful performance abroad, Katori Shingo discusses advancing in a 7-language world

SMAP's Katori Shingo (32) welcomed fans on January 23rd, the opening day of his new play "TALK LIKE SINGING" (Directed by Mitani Koki, music by Konishi Yasuharu), put on by the Tokyo Akasaka's ACT Theater. He plays Tarlow in the production, a character who, instead of speaking regularly, has been singing and dancing since birth. This is the first off-Broadway performance since its debut in November of last year. It was a successful performance after being abroad.

During its American run it was performed in English and Japanese with subtitles. There is also a scene that involves Spanish, Italian, and Korean, and the performance becomes understood through the translations of these languages.

"While it is difficult to translate a Japanese-only musical into other languages, when given English parts it is simple," staff of the performance explained. Aside from the three languages already in the play, French and Chinese are also candidates for translating into. "There are so many SMAP fans, so it is completely possible to give performances in English-speaking countries like Spain, Italy, Korea, France, and China. It also depends on Katori-san's schedule," they continued. There will be 50 shows in Japan until March 7th, with a targeted audience of 65,000 people.

On this day, Katori spoke to the audience before the play began. Counting the seven TV cameras present, Katori spoke to approximately 120 people saying, "I really enjoyed my hotel life in New York while doing 13 performances, but in Japan I have 50 performances in addition to my work with SMAP," he said. "The performance today will have a live broadcast. I wonder if it will be clear to see. I want to give it my all until the end, but if it's not me (at the end), have it be Inagaki Goro," he said, making the audience laugh.

SMAP Katori to Go to the World with His Musical!

The musical "TALK LIKE SINGING" starring SMAP member Katori Shingo opened at Akasaka ACT Theater at Tokyo on Jan.23rd. And whether the musical would have a world tour in the future is under discussion right now.

The story is about a unique young man name Tarlow knows only how to communicate through song and dance. The work was played at off-Broadway in New York City in U.S.A last November.

Both English and Japanese are used in the play, "It is started from Broadway and should be a work of the world. We want to bring it in London and South Korea as well as long as Katori-san's schedule allows." explained by the staff.

Although the schedule has not been decided right now, it is clear the musical is going to Europe and other countries in Asia.

Now Katori is busy with having 6 regular programs on TV and radio.

"All 13 performances in New York almost reached my physical limits. But I still have to do 50 performances in Japan while working as a member of SMAP...Maybe Inagaki Goro will take my place in the latter half." said Katori with a wry smile. The musical will be until March 7th.

SMAP Inagaki Goro to Play in Stage Production After Two Years Absence!

Currently SMAP member Katori Shingo is performing in the musical "TALK LIKE SINGING".
Meanwhile another member of the same group, Inagaki Goro attended the release conference of the stage production in which he would play the main role the other day.
It has been two years for Inagaki to play the leading role in a stage production. The play is titled "Zou/象 (lit.the Elephant)", which is one of the early best works of Betsuyaku Minoru, describing the heaviness of human beings by picturing sufferings of the victims of atomic bomb.

Inagaki also went to watch the musical played by Katori, and commented: "I watched his play in New York and it was really great. Though the worlds of the works are different, I felt moved. I will go to watch the play in Japan as well."

"I think the work will be tremendous for no reason and will try my best." said the co-star Okina Megumi.
How will Inagaki perform under such a serious theme as an actor? Keep your eyes on him!

Arashi ni Shiyagare - Broadcasting from April 2010  at 10-11pm on Saturdays.

From 10pm on Saturday's, highly popular band Arashi will challenge a completely new program.

What Arashi will face on this new program will be a "lack of common-sense, absolutely unplanned" form of variety entertainment. The five members without knowing things like who the guest will be or what they will be doing with said guest, will have to record the program under improvisation.

[Arashi vs Senior Guest] project: The Set
The main corner the program will be based on: [The Set], will consist of a different guest appearing each week and Arashi learning their specialization. The set will change weekly for each guest in this corner. Though one time it may be a music hall set, it might be a comedy set the next or even a tiered doll stand set the next.  This is in order for Arashi to learn entertaiment skills from the professionals who will appear each week.

Examples:

In the case the guest is a comedian...Arashi will learn comedy on a comedy set!
In the case the guest is a rakugo performer...Arashi will learn to tell rakugo on a concert hall set!
In the case the guest is a kabuki performer...Arashi will learn to perform kabuki on a stage set!

...under this condition, every week a set is prepared in advance for the professional guest.  Using improvisation, Arashi will challenge that person's profession and play around with it, on this talk and entertainment program.

Performers Comments:

Ohno Satoshi
I'd normally like to be enthusiastic about a new program but the staff said to us "In this program you'll be working with the guest with no script so please make something up!" (laughs)
At any rate...I-...I'll try my best~!

Sakurai Sho
It's already been 9 years since our very first program aired.
This will be a program on a weekend evening, at 10pm on Saturdays with the network Nihon TV who have looked after us all these years.
I think along with the staff we'll be able to make a program the whole family can enjoy.
What sort of chemistry will unfold between our five members of Arashi and the guest!?
Please look forward to it!

Aiba Masaki
It seems things like who the guest is or what we'll be doing will only be revealed to us during recording.
I think this will take good reflexes so I'll train that (^0^)
Even though I'm still a bit uneasy... (laugh)
I'll really do my best!

Ninomiya Kazunari
The fact we got a program in the 10pm Saturday slot makes me really happy!
Still, deciding what we'll be doing on the spot is....
Well, it's a fresh kind of program and I was shocked when I first heard.
Saying that, we won't be able to prepare at all so I think we should at least take it easy before recording starts (laugh)

Matsumoto Jun
The theme of this program is improvisation.
Without knowing what guest is appearing that day, we'll have to try and develop chemistry with them. I wonder if we'll be able to make it interesting?
In a way it's also going to be a difficult challenge for both the staff and the guest.
I think it would be best if we try to make a program with the audiences point of view in mind.
Our first regular variety program was also with Nihon TV. I think even now there are a lot of people who we are indebted to, so I'll put my best efforts into this.

Programs producer Kawabe Akihiro's comment:
I'm keeping the guest a secret from those five! I'll also keep the subject matter a secret!
It's a variety talk program with absolutely no planning!
We'll use the tense atmosphere of the staff and Arashi as a base, whether it be a sparkling Arashi or a boring Arashi, we'll put it all in order to create something that's 100% charming!
Please look forward to a very spontaneous Arashi on Saturday nights!

Arashi New Impromptu Program with No Script and Unknown Guests?!

Popular group Arashi's new TV show "Arashi Ni Shagare / 嵐にしやがれ" (temporary title) will start from April.
The main topic for the show is "impromptu"! There will be a talk show with no prearrangement and five members will have no idea who the guest will be until the show starts.
Of course there will be no script, and they have to learn to be professional from "big brother guests" at "The Set"(temporary title). All big name artists such as conte artists, comic storytellers, Kabuki actors will have an impromptu presence. The most interesting part will be how five members react to unexpected happenings and tension。

"We hope to make a TV program which will give some additional splendor to the family unite weekend nights." said Sakurai Sho. And Matsumoto Jun commented: "Whether it will be interesting or any chemical reaction? It's a make or break to guests and staffs."

With various genre and multi faceted, Arashi is definitely going to take the nation by storm!
Let's look forward to their brand new performance on the new TV show!
