Reds must overcome 抌ogey-side

FC United must overcome their Bamber Bridge hoodoo in the play-offsemi-final this Wednesday if they are to stand any chance of achievinga third consecutive promotion in what is arguable the club抯 biggestever game in its three year history.

After securing second place in the league, United will be confidentmood and feel that they have already proved that they deserve to bepromoted alongside champions Bradford Park Avenue into the UniBondPremier Division.

However, the play-off system creates a fresh fight for promotion wheresecond place counts only for gaining home advantage. Despite BamberBridge finishing in fifth place, they along with Bradford, are the onlyteam that the Reds failed to beat in the league this season.

United did win the first fixture between the two sides in thePresident抯 Cup on Hallowe抏n 5-0 but Brig fielded a largely secondstring team on that evening. The next meeting was at Irongate threeweeks later and the Preston outfit comfortably won 3-0 that day.

United fans can equally mention the fact that David Chadwick, StaurtRudd, Josh Howard and Simon Carden were missing on that occasion. Whenthose players were available for the two clashes in February and March, the Reds held Brig to a nil-nil and 2-2 draw. However, both were closeencounters which could have gone either way, the latter affair needingChris Baguley to safe United with a spectacular injury time strike.

The more positive news is that current form suggests that United havethe edge. The Reds have won four out of their last five with thedisappointing draw against Woodley Sports as the only blotched on thatrecord.

In comparison, Brig have won just two of their last five games with twodraws and one defeat. Their last victory was in emphatic style thoughwhen they crushed promotion rivals Ossett Albion 5-0 at Queen抯Terrace, taking a massive step towards securing a play-off place. So,it would appear that Brig can rise to the occasion when necessary.

Unlike another UniBond Division One North side, the Bamber Boys havecertainly not tried to earn a reputation as Samba Boys. In the threeleague meetings with the Reds this year, they have tackled hard andused physical strength to stop United from playing their own game. Theyalso have a striker who has no problems finding the back of the net inRyan Salmon, who was the division抯 fourth top-scorer with a haul of 28goals in all competitions.

United on the other hand, have top scorer Rory Patterson who notched 39goals this season and proven goal scorer Stuart Rudd who looks to beright back to his best. The major concern will be whether captain,David Chadwick will be past fit in time for the all important clash.

As someone once said; it抯 憇queaky bum time

Derby has earned the unwanted tag of the worst team in English Premier League history

Derby has earned the unwanted tag of the worst team in English Premier League history as Paul Jewell's side slumped to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Blackburn.

The Rams are stuck on 11 points and, with only one match to play, they are now unable to equal Sunderland's previous worst total of 15 points.

The nearest to Derby on the ladder is Birmingham on 32 competition points.

Sven-Goran Eriksson exits Manchester City in shame as players fail loyalty test

Middlesbrough 8 Manchester City 1

If this proves to be Sven-G鰎an Eriksson抯 swansong as Manchester City manager, then what a shame. Not only did they suffer an embarrassing defeat, but the Uefa Cup spot for fair play that was set to be theirs is now under threat because of the early dismissal of Richard Dunne, the captain, and there was also the sight of their supporters fighting with police. If Eriksson was hoping to make one last case for himself remaining in charge and changing the mind of Thaksin Shinawatra, the club抯 owner, he should clear his desk and book a flight to Portugal for a third stint at Benfica.

While City抯 travelling supporters left no one in any doubt as to where their loyalties lay, it seemed Eriksson抯 players were less prepared to give a similar show of support. The manager抯 leaving party turned into a humiliation in the Teesside fog and anything less appeared unlikely once Dunne had been shown the red card in the fourteenth minute for tripping Tuncay Sanli, conceding a penalty and leaving his defence in disarray.

Although Tuncay appeared to have lost control of the ball, Dunne was the last defender and Phil Dowd, the referee, had no choice but to send him off. Stewart Downing converted the penalty and Middlesbrough did not look back. Afonso Alves doubled the home team抯 lead in the 37th minute after a powerful run from Fabio Rochemback before City capitulated in the second half, conceding two goals in as many minutes, first from Downing, who curled a sublime volley past Andreas Isaksson in the 58th minute, then Alves.

The rout continued at an alarming rate courtesy of Adam Johnson, Rochemback and J閞閙ie Aliadi鑢e before Alves completed his hat-trick to leave City in ruins, irrespective of the late consolation goal from Elano.

Eriksson has taken City forward this season, yet the fact remains that his time in charge will be stained by this defeat, a chastising experience the club may never forget. The Swede was due to hold talks with Thaksin and his representatives last night in the hope of agreeing compensation and he said: 揧ou can say what you like about that game and I would have to agree. I have no excuses. After we went 3-0 down the players were somewhere else. This result is bad for everyone at the club, for the image of the club.

揑 hope things will become clear very soon. I expect to speak to people, or them to speak to me at least, people in the club because I have not had an answer yet.
