Stars fade in a flash of scandal
Many Malaysians question the lavish sponsorship of Norman Hakim and ‘Memey’ Suhaiza Suhaimi’s wedding.
LOCAL actor Norman Hakim and starlet "Memey" Suhaiza Suhaimi are not in the same celebrity stratosphere as Datuk Siti Nurhaliza or even Awie, so it raised quite an eyebrow or two, or maybe more, when their recent nuptials were touted Malaysia's wedding of the year.
The interest and attention it captivated is as befuddling as the worldwide adulation accorded to Pippa Middleton's derriere. Sponsors literally trod on each other to sponsor the couple's wedding receptions and finery -- from the bride's pearl-encrusted wedding gown to her couture shoes. For the nikah ceremony on Saturday alone, the cost came up to a staggering RM7.2 million, enough to feed the same number of starving children in Somalia. The couple held a wedding reception at Memey's family home in Johor the next day, and a lavish dinner reception at Crowne Plaza Mutiara, Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
How lavish? One of Memey's wedding gowns cost RM500,000 -- the price of five or six new schools for children in the Crocker Range Park in Sabah. Even Siti Nurhaliza's wedding gown came up to only a paltry RM400,000.
Why did the sponsors bend over backwards for this controversial couple, who were fodder for the Malay tabloids through most of last year and early this year for their private escapades?
Their alleged exploits led to a dramatic public confrontation with Norman's then wife Abby Abadi (can still be viewed over YouTube) and a khalwat charge which the couple were later acquitted of.
The people have not forgotten, however. When a photo of Norman and Memey on their wedding day was published on page four of the New Sunday Times, the newspaper's Facebook's fans reacted swiftly. "Funny and weird sponsors", snorted one, "Where's the dislike button?" asked another.
Indeed, shouldn't the people we celebrate and look up to, those who serve as role models -- whether they be celebrities, teachers, leaders, and especially politicians -- be controversy-free and have pristine reputations?
Or should artistes be judged solely by their ability to entertain, and leaders their ability to unite the community and serve their needs?
Should their actions, even if not against the law, negate their contributions to society and country? Or are their private matters no business of the public?
In Malaysia, at least, the consensus is that it is imperative for public personalities to possess high moral standards -- no controversy, scandal, money politics and breaking of promises.
Politicians especially should be better than most people in some vital aspects. Consequently, misbehaving politicians, especially, are rarely, if ever, tolerated. This is sometimes the case even in the absence of proof or a legal conviction.
There are not many examples of politicians who had returned to their political standing after a controversy, especially a sex-related one (yes, one, or two, or three had, but they are the exception rather than the norm, unlike in other countries such as Italy and the United States).
The crux of it is that a leader's career will likely be scattered to the four winds once caught, or even perceived of committing wrongdoing.
Is this, however, also true of celebrities? Abroad, they seem to be better off as a result of it.
Paris Hilton survived it, as did Pamela Anderson and Ryan Giggs. Charlie Sheen revels in it, as do Lindsay Lohan and Madonna.
But some are not as fortunate. Golfer par extraordinaire Tiger Woods never really exorcised the ghosts of transgressions pasts. Like the other fallen paragons before him -- Arnold Schwarzenegger, Hugh Grant and Pee Wee Herman -- his name and reputation have been sullied forever.
Some blame the media for ratcheting up public interest in celebrities who have otherwise contributed nothing much to society and country when others are worthier of the column inches such as Albert Einstein, Sir Issac Newton and Galileo.
Indeed, the concern is very real. Idolising the wrong people can have disastrous consequences. In Britain recently, 15-year-old Isobel Jones-Reilly was sucked in by the drug-taking exploits of the celebrities she idolised and died after taking a cocktail of illegal drugs.
Celebrity and its accompanying fame and wealth should be used to advance social causes. In this regard, we should idolise only those who are genuinely talented, deserving of our respect and worked very hard to reach where they are.
Public figures must also remember that their wonderful reputations can be ruined very easily in this world of Facebook, Twitter and easy Internet access.

Sah: memang semua reputs Malaysia tak pandai menilai kos...........
Tema wedding 'NEW YORK', tapi makannya nasi minyak,ayam msk merah,carcar,
daging,pajeri nenas & air sirap limau. Adehhhh....rasanya RM100 yang dinilaikan
tu cover sekali baju pengantin and royal suite. Kalo 12 jota bertemakan NEW YORK,
kena panggil Chef Gordon Ramsay or buruk-buruk Anthony Bourdain untuk masak
steak, ikan salmon and mesti ada foi gras and cavier. Or paling hazab pun, panggil
Chef Kyle Kwong masak 7 courses chinese dinner BARULAH SESUAI NAK BORAK
