Fulham's hopes of surviving in the Premier League were dealt a huge blow by Sunderland after a 3-1 defeat in a six-pointer at Craven Cottage.
Goals by Danny Collins, Michael Chopra and Kenwyne Jones helped the Black Cats ease to victory in a game that Roy Hodgson's Lilywhites simply had to win following last week's 2-2 draw at relegated Derby.
Fulham had more of the ball in match that they dominated but failed to take control of.
Collins headed in Daryl Murphy's cross just before the break after the hosts failed to clear a corner, Dean Whitehead having seen a similar effort disallowed for a foul earlier in the match.
The goal was a hammer blow for the Cottagers, who bossed the first 45 minutes but only really went close through a free Brian McBride header sent straight at Craig Gordon on 13 minutes.
Fulham started the second half desperate to claw their way back into the match, and they should have levelled soon after the restart when Diomansy Kamara shot weakly at the Scotland keeper when put in by McBride's deflected shot.
But it was Sunderland who got the all-important next goal, a result of woeful defending by Aaron Hughes, who hesitated in dealing with a Jones flick-on to allow Chopra - who came on at half-time for the injured Carlos Edwards - a quickly-improvised chip over the stranded Kasey Keller.
With a win the only acceptable result for the home side, men were piled forward and attacking players Healy, Clint Dempsey and Hameur Bouazza brought on.
One of the changes brought dividends. Healy - an outcast for club but hero for Northern Ireland - curled home from the edge of the box on 74 minutes after good work from Davies.
But Fulham were only too happy to press the self-destruct button immediately afterwards when Brede Hangelund let Murphy slip past him and lay on a simple finish for Jones.
Fulham piled men forward in vain hope of salvaging something from the game. But McBride and Healy both missed good chances with headers and efforts at the far post, while Dempsey fired at Gordon when he robbed Andy Reid.
But Roy Keane's men continued to confound the doubters and held on for a win which puts them closer to Premier League survival at the first time of asking and edges Fulham to near-certain relegation after seven years in the top flight. |

Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson admits he would love Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra to buy Ronaldinho this summer following a tenuous link with the under-fire Barcelona striker.
The Brazil forward, currently out injured, could leave the Camp Nou in the summer and his brother and representative Roberto De Assis was entertained at the City of Manchester stadium on Saturday by club directors ahead of the 2-0 defeat by Chelsea.
'It was the first time I had heard such a thing, so I really hope it is true,' said Eriksson.
'We would be able to find a place in our team for him, I can guarantee that.
'I will phone the owners. It was a surprise, but if they want to package Ronaldinho for me I would accept him and be very happy.'
And Eriksson joked about signing another high-profile Brazilian when he added: 'I would be happy to take Kaka at the same time!'

Shinawatra lines up Scolari to replace Eriksson
Sven-Goran Eriksson's tenure as Manchester City manager was plunged into doubt last night after it emerged that owner Thaksin Shinawatra had become exasperated with his team's downturn in fortunes under the Swede this year.
The former English head coach could lose his job this summer thanks to an inordinate impatience and a lack of realism being shown by the Thai, who, according to reliable sources, felt that his |

Eriksson safe from sack as City 'progress' pleases Thaksin
Manchester City yesterday said Sven Goran Eriksson's job was safe, amid reports that the club's owner, Thaksin Shinawatra, was dissatisfied and ready to replace the Swede with the current Portugal coach, Felipe Scolari.
City are bemused by suggestions Thaksin might have been in discussions with agents about replacing Eriksson, whose side's season has fizzled out despite a strong home record. The Thai has spent the last few weeks in Bangkok, where he makes his latest court appearance on corruption charges this week, and will not be back in Manchester until next Sunday's home match with Portsmouth.
It is possible that agents' contact with Thaksin's representatives at Eastlands have given rise to suggestions of Eriksson's demise, which first surfaced two weeks ago. But Thaksin is the man who makes the decisions and Eriksson's removal seems inconceivable. Victory at Sunderland on Saturday saw the club to its highest Premier League points tally.
"The chairman has made it clear only a few weeks ago that he is happy about the progress we have made this season with a top-10 finish being his target," said a club spokesman. "We remain focused on continuing the domestic progress made under Thaksin Shinawatra."
The links between agents and Thaksin's representatives also came to light last week when it was suggested that Ronaldinho might come to the club. Thaksin was not involved in any such discussions and the Brazilian now seems ready to sign for Milan. City have been adamant that they are not interested in buying a |

Wigan defender Scharner confident Latics can derail Chelsea's title challenge
Paul Scharner is convinced Wigan can derail Chelsea's title charge at Stamford Bridge on Monday evening. The Latics centre-back feels the Blues are vulnerable following their below-par performance against Fenerbahce last week in the Champions League. Although the Blues still clinched a place in the semi-finals on the back of a 2-0 win on the night, and 3-2 on aggregate, Scharner senses an upset is on the cards. "We've a chance. If you saw their game against Fenerbahce, they did not play to their usual standards," said the 28-year-old Austrian. "They almost managed to concede an equaliser before they scored a second, so I believe there's a possibility we can do something. "We recently managed to get results against Liverpool and Arsenal, so why can't we go to Chelsea and get something?" As if to further irritate manager Avram Grant's side, Scharner added: "I think Manchester United will win the title. We could end Chelsea's hopes tonight, and we will try everything to do that." The fact Chelsea have not been beaten at home in the league for just over four years, a run of 79 games, would suggest otherwise. Wigan have also won only once in 17 away matches this season, and that was at relegated Derby three months ago. Latics boss Steve Bruce is aware his side face a mountainous task, but in the wake of the results against Liverpool and Arsenal, he said: "Anything can happen. "I know people will say 'little, lowly Wigan, they can't take on the mighty Chelsea and get anything can they?' "Well, of course we can if we approach it right, have a go and it is then possible. "It will obviously be very difficult because they've not been beaten at home for four years, so we know the size of the task. "One thing's for certain, if we play like we have done at home recently, then we're going to give Chelsea a hell of a game. "We can do it. That's when you need to have a bit of belief, to have something about you. "This is why we're in this profession, to play in big games and occasions like these." Although confident he will have his side physically and mentally prepared, trying to find a weakness in the Chelsea is a forlorn task. "If they have then I've yet to see it," added Bruce, whose side remain on course for safety, even if the gap to the bottom three was cut to five points on Saturday after Bolton's win over West Ham. "Chelsea have a wonderful array of talent used to playing at the top level, fantastic players in their own right, so I don't think they've any weaknesses. "You hope that collectively they have a rare off night, and that can sometimes can happen. "But the reason why they're at the top and in a semi-final is because it doesn't happen very often." Bruce's squad is strengthened by the return from suspension of key midfielders Michael Brown and Jason Koumas.

Villa boss O'Neill settles on Bolton keeper Jaaskelainen
tribalfooball.com - April 14, 2008
Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is moving for Bolton's Bosman prospect Jussi Jaaskelainen.
The Mirror says the highly-rated 32-year-old is currently out injured with a back problem which has sidelined him for the rest of the season.
It means he is unlikely to play for Bolton again as he is out of contract at the end of the season, and with O'Neill unwilling to pay the |
