Ito Atsushi, Kiritani Mirei in airport drama “Apoyan”
Nov 14,2012 - by tokyograph

Actor Ito Atsushi has been chosen to lead a TBS drama series called “Apoyan ~ Hashiru Kokusai Kuukou.” The show will also feature Kiritani Mirei as the heroine (her first in a prime-time drama series), along with supporting performances by Kanjiya Shihori and Yanagiba Toshiro.

“Apoyan” is based on the novel “Koisuru Kuukou” by Shinno Takeshi. Set at Narita International Airport, the story provides a “behind-the-counter” look at the airport staff working tirelessly to resolve various problems, particularly related to their customers.

Ito plays Endo Keita, a tour planner for a travel agency who suddenly gets transferred to work as a manager at Narita Airport. Not quite suited for his position, he is forced to mature through working with his capable subordinate Morio Haruko (Kiritani), dealing with his quirky but sincere co-workers, and falling in love with a “ground hostess” (a term referring to the female employees working at the check-in counters).

“Apoyan” is apparently lingo within the travel industry, referring to the customer service professionals who strive to resolve any traveler’s issues and send them off safely on their trip with a smile. “Apo” is an abbreviation for “airport.”

TBS has scheduled “Apoyan” for Thursday nights at 9:00pm. The series will premiere in January.

Kanjiya Shihori to play a ‘love refugee’ in a three-nighter drama on NTV

On November 16th, it was announced that actress Kanjiya Shihori will star in a mini drama titled ‘Pin Onna no Merry Christmas ~Koi Shitai, Koi Shiyou to Shinai, Koi Dekinai.~” on NTV.

The drama will be made up of three episodes that will air on three consecutive nights on December 17th, 18th, and 19th. Kanjiya, who has never never starred in a drama on NTV before, will play a 28-year-old female company employee named ‘Matsubara Kaede’, who is a perfect example of a so-called ‘love refugee’. In her case, she hasn’t been able to love a man, let alone have an actual boyfriend, for more than three years.

Kanjiya herself already made clear that she’s not like her character and commented, “I guess I’m not really a ‘love refugee’ myself. I’m already fainting whenever I see a macho man…” She continued to promote the drama, “There are a lot of moments that women are going to love, but I think that even men can use it as a guide to love and find out what kind of men women like. This drama is full of energy and shouldn’t be missed by anyone.”

Other characters in the drama include her good friend, a systems engineer who is good at domestic chores – played by Tsukamoto Takashi, a fellow female colleague who loves shoujo manga and romantic movies – played by Hiraiwa Kami, and another popular female colleague who is never without a boyfriend – played by Tanimura Mitsuki. Moreover, Hirayama Hiroyuki will appear as Kaede’s love interest and Kaneko Nobuaki as a drummer and her former boyfriend.

The script for ‘Pin Onna no Merry Christmas’ was written by Matsuda Yuko (‘Gokusen’).

NTV will air the 55-minute long episodes of this mini drama every night at 12:18 a.m. on those three days.

Gouriki Ayame to star in next Fuji TV “Getsu 9″ drama

On November 21st, Fuji TV announced that they have selected young actress Gouriki Ayame for the leading role in their upcoming ‘Getsu 9′ (Monday 9:00pm) winter drama titled ‘Biblia Koshodou no Jiken Techou‘.

Though Gouriki has been appearing in all kind of dramas for seven seasons in a row without rest, this is going to mark her first starring role in a prime time drama let alone a getsu-9 drama. She is really rising rapidly up the career ladder and was really surprised about the offer herself. “I thought this was a hidden camera prank,” she commented.

Gouriki continued, “Of course it came as a huge surprise when I was asked to star in a getsu-9 drama. To be honest, my feelings are still all over the place.” She revealed that after graduating from junior high school, she wrote a letter to her mother in which she fantasized about coming out in a getsu-9 in her future. Now that her fantasy has become reality, she expressed, “I definitely want to live up to everyone’s expectation.”

‘Biblia Koshodou no Jiken Techou’ is based on a popular mystery novel series of the same name by author Mikami En. Three volumes have already been released so far and together they have sold more than 3,100,000 copies to date. The story follows a girl named Shinokawa Shioriko (Gouriki) who is the shopkeeper of a deserted secondhand book store called ‘Biblia Koshodou’ in Kamakura. Shioriko possesses a great knowledge about ancient books, which helps her to unravel various mysteries and secrets about old books that are being brought to the store by various visitors.

Shioriko is a very introverted girl with an extreme fear of strangers, but as soon as a conversation is about an ancient book, she suddenly becomes really eloquent. It’s a unique character and a good challenge for Gouriki, who commented, “It feels like she’s the exactly opposite of me, but in the past I had been very shy as well. Maybe I should try to become my old self again (for this role).”

The toughest challenge is going to be the fact that she was already told that she won’t be allowed to smile for her role, which is one of Gouriki’s biggest trademarks. She said, “So far I’ve been playing a lot of girls who were always smiling brightly, so this is going to be a new challenge for me.”

The producers also revealed that there will be some kind of love story for those who still associate the getsu-9 time slot with romantic dramas. They stated, “People who crave for a love story will enjoy this drama as much as people who like to solve mysteries.”

Gouriki added, “I hope that everyone will get immersed into the world of ancient books.”

‘Biblia Koshodou no Jiken Techou’ is scheduled to begin airing in January 2013.

NHK releases poster image for taiga drama ‘Yae no Sakura’

On November 21st, NHK began their promotions for the 2013 taiga drama ‘Yae no Sakura‘ with the release of the main poster featuring starring actress Ayase Haruka.

Ayase is disguising herself as the protagonist Niijima Yae, a female warrior that can be described as the Japanese Jeanne d’Arc during the closing days of the Tokugawa shogunate. In the poster she is holding a spencer rifle and is glancing into the camera with a serious expression. The tagline on the poster reads “I will bloom in this era“.

Yae is the daughter of her domain’s gunnery instructor and participated in the Boshin War disguised as a man. During the war she barricaded herself with 500 women in Tsuruga castle, Aizu. She prefers to fight with a spencer repeating rifle, a breech loading rifle that can be loaded with a seven tube magazine; and always carries around 100 bullets around her back in order to be prepared for the worst. For the poster they also added a kimono with a sakura pattern, but this was only used to emphasize the mixture of east and west and won’t be a part of the outfit in the drama itself.

During the Meiji era, Yae marries Niijima Jo or Joseph Hardy Neesima, who worked and taught Christianity as an educator and founded the Doshisha University as well as the Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts. The drama depicts her whole life from 1845 until 1932.

The supporting cast includes Odagiri Joe, Nishijima Hidetoshi, Hasegawa Hiroki, Tamayama Tetsuji, Kuroki Meisa, Gouriki Ayame, Oguri Shun, Sorimachi Takashi, and many more.

‘Yae no Sakura’ is scheduled to air its first of 50 episodes on January 6th, 2013.

Ichihara Hayato to star in drama adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s ‘The Brothers Karamazov’

On November 27th, Fuji TV announced that they are going to produce a modern-day adaptation of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s final novel ‘The Brothers Karamazov‘ starring actor Ichihara Hayato for the upcoming 2013 winter season.

Simply speaking, the drama is going to follow the lives of three brothers as they become the prime suspects in their father’s murder case. One by one, they are being driven into a corner until the whole truth finally comes to light. Aside from exploring the psychology of the three brothers, the whole story is also set within the context of a political chaos and a disparate society, similar to Dostoyevsky’s original.

Ichihara is going to play the second son, a nihilistic lawyer, which is a complete change to his usual hot-blooded roles such as in his breakthrough drama ‘ROOKIES‘ (TBS, 2008). He commented, “I’m grateful that I get to take part in the adaptation of the prime example of a perfect novel written by Dostoyevsky. I hope that everyone will enjoy the world view that goes beyond reason and common sense.”

The two actors Saito Takumi and Hayashi Kento are going to play the first-born and third son, respectively.

‘The Brothers Karamazov’ is scheduled to air every Saturday at 11:10 p.m. starting in January 2013.

Horikita Maki, Okada Masaki and Shimazaki Haruka to appear in ‘ATARU’ special + more details

On November 30th, TBS finally announced the exact broadcast date and more details for the upcoming special episode of the popular drama ‘ATARU‘, which aired during the spring season of 2012.

Aside from the fact that it won’t be just one special episode but two with a total run time of four hours, they also revealed that three new key roles will be played by actress Horikita Maki, actor Okada Masaki, and AKB48 member Shimazaki Haruka.

‘ATARU’ will star SMAP’s Nakai Masahiro as the lovable ‘Chokozai’ aka ‘Ataru’ who is suffering from the savant syndrome. In the drama, Chokozai helps out two detectives – played by Kuriyama Chiaki and Kitamura Kazuki – solve various difficult cases by using his extraordinary memory and deductive skills.

The two special episodes are titled ‘Suteyama Tanteisha Monogatari ~’Anan Kota-kun Yuukai Jiken’ ni Chokozai tachi ga Idomu!!~‘ and ‘ATARU Kanzen Shinsaku Special – New York Kara no Chosenjo!!‘ Both specials will air on January 6th, 2013 from 7:00 until 11:00 pm. In the first episode, detective Ebina Maiko (Kuriyama) opens a private detective agency that is specialized in so-called ‘discarded mountains’, which are cases the police believes to be closed, although there are still some unanswered questions. A three-year-old boy has gone missing and her agency is supposed to find him.

The second episode is the main special with the additional characters. Chokozai’s younger brother, Tasuku (Okada) becomes the prime suspect in a serial murder case, therefore Chokozai returns to Japan in order to save his brother. While trying to solve this case together with his friends, they run into a mysterious woman named ‘Alessandro Carolina Madoka’ (Horikita). Madoka and Chokozai have gone through the same special training by the FBI, but their interests and path in life are completely different.

Horikita, who is said to be a big fan of ‘ATARU’, commented, “I was personally looking forward to the continuation of the drama, therefore it’s a really big honor for me to actually make an appearance in it.” She continued, “Madoka’s mind is very complex, which made it difficult to express what’s on her mind. It’s the last episode, so please don’t miss it.”

Okada expressed, “I would like to express the warmth in the bonds of family that is one of the themes of the drama. I am looking forward to working with Nakai-san.”

The 18-year-old idol Shimazaki plays the 36-year-old ‘Bimajo (=beautiful witch)’ Mizuno Rumi, who is a member of the Metropolitan Police Department’s mobile forensics unit. In the drama, a similar role was played by former AKB48 member Mitsumune Kaoru.

She stated, “The age difference is huge, but it should be a lot of fun to play this role. I’ll be able to gain so much valuable experience by taking in the detailed guidance of the director and by watching the performances of the other actors up-close.”

Eita to star in new Fuji TV drama ‘Saikou no Rikon’

On November 30th, it was announced that Eita is going to star in the upcoming Fuji TV winter 2013 drama ‘Saikou no Rikon‘.

Eita is playing a just-divorced salesman who is still living together with his ex-wife. One day he happens to run into his now-married former girlfriend from his student days and feels attracted to her again. His ex-wife will be played by actress Ono Machiko, his former girlfriend by Maki Yoko, and the latter’s husband by actor Ayano Go.

This is going to be Eita’s second starring role in the upcoming winter season, which is an exceptional circumstance for any actor.

‘Saikou no Rikon’ is an original romantic comedy written by Sakamoto Yuji (‘Tokyo Love Story’, ‘Mother’). Sakamoto and Eita already teamed up last year for the drama ‘Soredemo, Ikite Yuku‘ (Fuji TV).

Eita is playing Hamasaki Kosei, a likable yet incapable salesman who is married to the very abrasive Yuika (Ono). They both seem to have a strained relationship with each other, therefore it’s no surprise that Yuika suddenly wants to get a divorce. At the same time, Kosei happens to run into his former girlfriend Akari (Maki) from his college days. Akari is married as well and is living in an open marriage with her freewheeling husband Ryo (Ayano). Aside from all the lover quarrels and some shocking secrets, the drama is going to depict the troubles of married couples and families in a light and easy way.

Off-screen, Eita married singer Kimura Kaela back in 2010, and the couple had their first baby boy. He commented, “When I heard that Sakamoto is writing a family-themed comedy, I was hoping that the timing would match with me, so I could play the role. I absolutely didn’t want anyone else to get this role and became really impatient.”

He just knew by intuition that this is going to be perfect, and the script confirmed his hunch. He added, “It’s nothing like any drama you’ve seen before!”

Fuji TV will broadcast ‘Saikou no Rikon’ every Thursday at 10:00 p.m. starting in January of 2013.

Nakama Yukie to return as an enchantress in new drama ‘Saki’

On November 30th, Fuji TV announced that actress Nakama Yukie will reprise her role as the beautiful, yet scary and malicious ‘Meyer Saki’ from the 2011 winter drama ‘Utsukushii Rinjin‘ (‘Beautiful Neighbor’).

In the upcoming winter season, ‘Meyer Saki’ will be the protagonist in the same-named drama ‘Saki‘. Her goal in ‘Utsukushii Rinjin’ was to deceive a married woman and to destroy her peaceful life. This time she will ruin the lives of several men.

According to the producers, we will see the same ‘Meyer Saki’ we got to know, hate, and love in ‘Utsukushii Rinjin’, but they want to tell us a completely different story rather than forcing a direct sequel. Therefore, it has been also necessary to replace every character except for ‘Saki’.

This time ‘Meyer Saki’ will work as a nurse at the pediatrics department of a general hospital. The young patients and all men love her because of her angelic smile, her perfect cooking skills, and the sheer beauty she radiates in everything she does. However, none of them know of her amazing ability to ruin other people’s lives while keeping her hands clean all the time. Her targets this time are the reporter of a major magazine (Miura Shohei) who is searching for his older sister, a famous lawyer (Hagiwara Masato) who is fighting for justice, and her main target – the devoted husband and board chairman of said hospital, played by Takashima Masanobu.

Uchida Yuki will play a female reporter who becomes suspicious of Saki’s behavior. Other characters will be played by Shonozaki Ken and Ishiguro Hideo, among others. The theme song titled “Catch Me -If you wanna-“ will once again be provided by the Korean group Tohoshinki.

‘Saki’ will air every Tuesday at 10:00 pm and is slated to premiere with an extended episode on January 8th, 2013.

Sometani Shota & Sono Shion team up once again for upcoming drama

It was announced that actor Sometani Shota and filmmaker Sono Shion will team up once again for TV Tokyo’s upcoming drama “Minna! Esper dayo!”

Sometani starred in Sono’s movie ‘Himizu‘ that allowed Sometani to receive the “MARCELLO MASTROIANNI AWARD” at the 68th Venice International Festival, back in September 2011. Sometani commented, “I was wondering what kind of work it would be, and it was actually a live-action adaptation of manga that is like a total opposite from ‘Himizu’.  I think it will be quite interesting. If we categorize it, it would be in a comedy genre, but I am so sure it will be the drama that does not fit in any genre, or even protrudes from any genre.” Sono also commented, “Wakasugi-sensei’s manga is the best! I will try my best not to ruin the wonderfulness of the original work.”

“Minna! Esper dayo!” is originally a popular ongoing manga from Young Magazine written by Wakasugi Kiminori, who is also known as the author of “Detroit Metal City” that has been adapted into live-action movie.

It’s a SF comedy that depicts the protagonist, Kamogawa Yoshiro (Sometani), as an ordinary high school student, who suddenly gets an ability to read other people’s minds. At the same time, other people in the same town also gain special powers like telepathy, telekinesis, teleportation, clairvoyance, precognition, etc.

At first, those espers don’t know what to do with their abilities, as they use it for some ridiculous purposes such as trying to sneak a look at girls’ underwear, or trying to read the mind of a girl he likes. However, they start getting involved into a battle with an influence that uses the ESP for evil deeds…

“Minna! Esper dayo!” is scheduled to begin airing next spring.

Fujiwara Norika to star in an “intense love drama” with Watabe Atsuro

On December 5th, premium TV network WOWOW announced that actress Fujiwara Norika (41) and actor Watabe Atsuro (44) will be starring in their upcoming drama serial ‘Onna to Otoko no Nettai‘.

‘Onna to Otoko no Nettai’ is going to be a suspenseful six-parter about the heated, literally ‘tropical’ (‘nettai’) love relationship between a man and a woman who gradually approach the darker side of society. Fujiwara is playing a competent TV reporter, while Watabe is a source for one of her stories.

Fujiwara, whose last starring role in a drama dates back to ‘Chance‘ (NHK) in 2010, was completely taken away by the profound script, which was written by the late Nozawa Hisashi (‘A Sleeping Forest’, ‘Kekkon Zenya’). She commented, “(While reading the script) It was a damp, sweaty and blurry sensation. I was truly able to feel the tropical atmosphere between the man and the woman. (Now that I’m in my forties), I’d like to captivate the viewers with a poisonous and intense drama that is overflowing with mature charms.”

Watabe stated, “I’d like us both to put all of our strength into the filming and have a great time together.” Fujiwara added, “We want to show you a real adult love story.”

WOWOW is going to broadcast ‘Onna to Otoko no Nettai’ every Sunday at 10:00 pm. The first episode is slated to air on January 20th, 2013.

Aso Kumiko chosen as the heroine for Nagase Tomoya’s upcoming drama

It’s been revealed that Aso Kumiko has been chosen as the heroine in Nagase Tomoya’s upcoming drama series, ‘Nakuna, Hara-chan‘. She will play ‘Echizen-san’, the creator of Nagase’s character ‘Hara-chan’. “It’s been a long time since I’ve starred in a drama series, so I feel uneasy, but with Nagase-san, my co-stars, and staff, I hope to have fun and create a fantasy world where the hero jumps out of a manga,” she said.

‘Nakuna, Hara-chan’ is a love story about ‘Echizen-san’, an ordinary woman who works at a kamaboko factory. Instead of a diary, she draws manga in her notebook to express her daily resentment. One day, the main character ‘Hara-chan’ suddenly jumps out of the manga and falls in love with his creator. The script will be written by Okada Yoshikazu, who was in charge of NHK’s morning drama series ‘Ohisama‘, and it will be produced by the staff of ‘Yokai Ningen Bem‘, a drama that aired from October to December of 2011.

Producer Kawano Hidehiro commented, “I think she’s an actress who can play an everlasting admiration. Hara-chan, who leaves the manga world, falls in love for the first time and continues to run after her. I thought she was perfect for the part. I am looking forward to the birth of a new heroine for this Saturday drama.”

Additionally, Kanjani8’s Maruyama Ryuhei will play ‘Tanaka-kun’, an employee of the kamaboko factory who has feelings for ‘Echizen-san’. Kutsuna Shiori, Kaku Kento, and Yakushimaru Hiroko has also been added to the cast.

NTV will air ‘Nakuna, Hara-chan’ starting in January of 2013.
