GEORGE TOWN: Bukit Gelugor Member of Parliament and lawyer Karpal Singh yesterday related how he was involved in an accident which left him confined to a wheelchair for more than two years.
Karpal said he was thrown about inside a Penang International Airport limousine when it was knocked from behind by a car.
Recalling the Jan 29, 2005 accident, Karpal said the limousine driver had put on the signal light and slowed down to turn into his house when he suddenly felt a bang.
He said he felt an excruciating pain in his spine after the accident and was later rushed to the Gleneagles Medical Centre before being transferred to the Loh Guan Lye Specialist Centre.
Karpal said this during examination-in-chief by deputy public prosecutor Azlina Mahmod.
He was testifying in the trial of bank manager, Lay Yee Fuat, 46, who was charged with driving recklessly and causing severe injuries to Karpal along Jalan Utama about 12.15am on Jan 29, 2005.
The offence under the Road Transport Act carries a maximum one-year jail sentence or a fine of up to RM10,000.
Meanwhile, Karpal's son, Jagdeep Singh Deo, later testified that he approached Lay after the accident.
Jagdeep said he told Lay to calm down and wait for the traffic police to arrive when the latter started saying he regretted what had happened.
He added that several of Lay’s friends later took him away from the scene.
"I then confronted him and told him to remain at the scene until the police arrive.
"I also demanded that he give me his identity card," he said.
During cross-examination by counsel M. Bala, Jagdeep said he was unaware of any law which requires a person to be at a crime or accident scene until the police arrive.
"All I know is that if a person is involved in any crime or accident, he must wait for the police and not run away," he said. Hearing continues on April 26.
