Premier League - Hull continue amazing run
Hull City continued their amazing start to life in the Premier League with a 3-0 win over fellow promoted side West Brom at the Hawthorns.
After an entertaining yet goalless opening period, the game swung the Tigers' way in the second half as goals by Kamil Zayatte, Geovanni and Marlon King (pictured) sent Phil Brown's side level on points with Chelsea and Liverpool at the top of the table.
Victory made it four wins from their last four fixtures for the top flight debutants, who are now unbeaten in six matches.
Games against current leaders Chelsea and champions Manchester United are up next, but such an impressive record from their first nine Premier League games has already proved they are more than capable of mixing it with the best.
The upcoming opposition will of course provide a far sterner test than West Brom did, but nevertheless last season's Championship winners contributed their fair share to an entertaining game in the Black Country.
The Baggies have struggled for consistency so far this season but they enjoyed large periods of possession against Hull; Tony Mowbray's side simply failed to capitalise in front of goal.
It was the visitors who first fired an early warning shot across the bows of their hosts, Brazilian Geovanni bringing Scott Carson into early action with a sharp half-volley after just three minutes.
But with Ishmael Miller in particular providing a constant threat to the Hull goal, it was West Brom who went on to dominate the opening period.
The former Manchester City striker may be lacking some composure in front of goal but there is no doubting his strength and willingness to run - qualities which saw him get into goalscoring positions on a regular basis throughout the match.
Twice Miller was on target during an opening period filled with chances for both sides, but on both occasions he was thwarted by Boaz Myhill - who enjoyed a great game - in the Hull goal.
But it was his team-mate Jonas Olsson who went closest to breaking the deadlock early on, the Swedish defender heading against the cross bar after Myhill could only parry Borja Valero's shot.
Miller's strike partner Roman Bednar went close with a neat volley from Valero's near post corner just before the break while Hull were limited to Zayatte header from Dean Marney's corner which flew over the bar.
But Zayatte was on target soon after the restart, the Guinean volleying a corner past Carson on 47 minutes in a piece of finishing that belied his central defensive position.
West Brom looked to hit back straight away as Ryan Donk headed goalwards moments later, only to his effort bundled behind by Sam Ricketts who had taken up position on the post.
Donk again went close with a header over the bar before James Morrison brought a fine save out of Myhill with a curler from outside the penalty area.
Hull were restricted to threatening on the breaks, King bringing Carson into action on one such occasion, but two goals in quick succession just after the hour mark proved decisive as the visitors effectively sealed all three points.
Geovanni started and finished a break on 62 minutes to put Hull two-up, the Brazilian winning the ball whilst playing King through at the same time before diving in to head the striker's return pass past Carson.
Four minutes later and Hull were three goals to the good as King took full advantage of a poor defensive header by Gianni Zuiverloon to take the ball in his stride and fire confidently home.
The third effectively killed off the game, although Morrison had time to clip a post before the stadium virtually emptied as disgruntled home fans took their leave early. |
