LOME (AFP) - Mali's Frederic Kanoute has been named African Player of the Year for 2007, the Sevilla striker beating Chelsea' Michael Essien

and Didier Drogba

to the title.

The Confederation of African Football-backed award was presented at a ceremony here late Friday.

The 30-year-old Kanoute is the first European-born player to receive the honour.

Essien took time out from preparing with Ghana for Sunday's African Nations Cup quarter-final with Nigeria in nearby Accra to attend the dinner.

Initially he had been refused permission to go by Claude Le Roy but the Ghana coach relented after pressure from Essien's teammates.

CAF nominated Nations Cup quarter-finalists Ivory Coast as the best team on the continent last year, with Tunisian first division side Etoile the best African club.

The best younger player award went to Zambia's Mulenga Clifford.

Kanoute was part of the Mali team that was knocked out of the African Nations Cup after the opening round after a 3-0 defeat to Drogba's Ivory Coast last Tuesday.
