Mariners is having a bad season this year but Blue Jay is doing tremendously great

Nevertheless, I still love my home team, no matter what...Padres and the Bolts, of course!

Lakers' Jackson wants more from Kobe than points

Kobe Bryant scored 81 points against Toronto in January 2006, making 28 of 46 shots on the way to the second-highest point total in NBA history, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point effort in 1962.

It's impossible to imagine it happening this season with such a deep Los Angeles Lakers team, and Coach Phil Jackson suggested it would be better if "81: The Sequel" never took place, going back to last season's NBA Finals to prove a point.

"We know that Boston literally said, 'We've got to take Kobe out, we just have to throw our defense at them,' " Jackson said. "We have to have more guys fit into our offense if we're going to be a team that can compete with those clubs."

Jackson was then asked whether Bryant was happy with his role this season, which has included fewer minutes and lower stats across the board. Jackson began to answer with something akin to "Well, it's a long season," before ribbing a reporter for a brief note in a story touching on the fact that Bryant needed 38 points against Toronto to become the youngest player ever to reach 22,000 points.

"That was like a carrot in front of a donkey, whoever did that," Jackson said with sarcasm. "It was stupid. That could really mess up the game for tonight."

Bryant scored 23 points Sunday against the Raptors, failing to beat Chamberlain to 22,000. Bryant was 30 years and 99 days old Sunday. Chamberlain was 30 years and 100 days when he hit 22,000 in 1966.

At any rate, Jackson said he hoped Bryant would continue to buy into a team-first principle.

BASKETBALL NBA: Lakers end Celtics record winning run

LOS ANGELES: The Los Angeles Lakers capitalised on their first chance to get some revenge for last year's NBA finals defeat, beating Boston 92-83 on Thursday to end the Celtics' franchise-record winning streak at 19 games.

Kobe Bryant (pic) had 27 points and nine rebounds and Pau Gasol scored seven of his 20 points in the final three minutes in the Christmas Day showdown.

The Celtics dropped to 27-3, while the Lakers improved to 24-5 with their 12th straight home victory. They're 15-1 at home overall.

l IN Orlando, Florida, the Southeast Division-leading Orlando Magic notched a sixth straight victory by thumping New Orleans Hornets 88-68.

Hedo Turkoglu scored 20 points, and Dwight Howard had 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Magic.
Hornets star Chris Paul's NBA-record steals streak ended at 108 games.

l IN Phoenix, Roger Mason hit a three-pointer from the corner at the buzzer to give San Antonio Spurs a thrilling 91-90 win over Phoenix Suns.

It was the Spurs' fourth straight victory.

Phoenix's Shaquille O'Neal become the only player other than Wilt Chamberlain to miss 5,000 career free throws, while Steve Nash had eight assists to become the 13th NBA player to reach 7,000 for his career.

l IN Cleveland, the Cavaliers were forced to work harder than expected to see off lowly Washington Wizards 93-89 and maintain their perfect home record this season.

Mo Williams had 24 points, and Cleveland needed 11 straight points in the final 1:33 to see off the Wizards, who have lost eight straight. -- AP

Basketball / NBA: Jazz outlast Celtics

SALT LAKE CITY (Utah): Mehmet Okur (pic) scored 19 points and Deron Williams added 18 with 10 assists as the Utah Jazz edged National Basketball Association champions Boston 90-85 on Thursday.

With the score tied at 83-83, Matt Harpring sank a jump shot from the free-throw line to put the Jazz up by two points with just over a minute to play.

After Ray Allen missed a game-tying lay-up, Harpring pulled a rebound away from the Celtics' All-Star and Williams crossed-up Allen on the offensive end before stepping back and sinking a jump shot that was almost identical to his teammate's basket on the prior possession.

Paul Pierce, who scored 20 points to lead four players in double figures for the Celtics, got an easy lay-up out of a timeout, but Utah's Andrei Kirilenko hit the first of two free throws and the Jazz came up with the rebound on the missed second shot to seal the victory.

The Celtics were without Kevin Garnett for the second half after the star forward left the game in the second quarter with a strained right knee.
Garnett, the reigning defensive player of the year, jumped to grab a rebound with 1:56 remaining in the first half.

He appeared to injure the leg before going up, landing completely on his left leg and immediately making his way to the bench. -- AFP

it's best of 7, not best of 4. a team needs to win 4 games out of seven to move to the next round. used to be best of 5 for first round.

Lakers take 3-1 lead with another OT win

ORLANDO, Florida (AP): The Los Angeles Lakers took a 3-1 lead the NBA finals Thursday, rallying to beat the Orlando Magic 99-91 in overtime to move within one win of a 15th championship.

Derek Fisher hit the tying 3-pointer with 4.6 seconds left in regulation, then made the go-ahead 3 with 31 seconds to go in extra time as the Lakers won their second overtime game of the series.

It was the first time since 1984, when Magic Johnson's Lakers and Larry Bird's Celtics hooked up, that two games in a finals have gone to overtime.

Kobe Bryant had 32 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Lakers, who can wrap it up Sunday in Game 5 here.

Trevor Ariza and Pau Gasol each had 16 points for Los Angeles, which came back from a 12-point halftime deficit. Ariza had 13 of the Lakers' 30 points in the third quarter.

The Lakers are 7-0 following a loss in this postseason.

Unless they can force a Game 6, the Magic will remember this as another finals game that got away.

Dwight Howard was magnificent everywhere but at the free-throw line. Orlando's superman of a center had 16 points, 21 rebounds and a finals-record nine blocks. But he made just 6 of 14 foul shots, and it was his two crucial misses with 11.1 seconds to go in regulation that doomed the Magic.

First, Fisher, who has made a career of hitting memorable shots in crucial situations, pulled up and without hesitating dropped a 3-pointer over Orlando's Jameer Nelson with 4.6 seconds left to tie it 87-87. The shot stunned the Magic's maniacal crowd, which was hoping the home team could win its second straight finals game after dropping its first six.

"I was just going to take over and kind of survey the situation but Nelson was giving me a lot of space and I like to step into those 3s," Fisher said. "Even though I wasn't making them, I felt like I could do that. I felt good to help the team that way."

Fisher had missed his first five 3s, but came up with one the little left-hander will cherish forever.

"My teammates and my coaches kept giving me that confidence to continue to believe in myself," Fisher said. "I wanted to come through for the guys."

Just as they did in Game 2, Orlando had one final try, and this time guard Courtney Lee, who misfired on a tougher-than-it-looked layup in that loss, wasn't on the floor. The Magic inbounded the ball to Mickael Pietrus, but his long and contested jumper was off.

Bryant scored two quick baskets in the overtime, and Howard tied it when he split two free throws with 1:27 remaining.

On L.A.'s next trip, Ariza grabbed his own miss to get another 24 seconds and Fisher lined up and drilled his 3-pointer from the top of the key to make it 94-91.

As he retreated down court and Orlando called a timeout, the Lakers bench stormed onto the court and surrounded the popular 34-year-old Fisher, who came back to the team after a short stint in Utah.
